When I first started planning my g-body project I planned on using a disc 8.8 converting to a long arm suspension for an "easy" install. The 8.8 is clearly a great option, really its a no brainer. Unfortunately I found very little performance info from anyone using the long arm outside of the marketing from the main company that sells/ installs this set up. Besides, if you bought their kit you'd be around the same cost as a bolt in aftermarket rear. I even found all the parts through Nascar suppliers to do it myself but it was still spendy and sketchy of whether it would do what I wanted. I decided to go ahead and go for the 9" do it yourself option which is far from a bolt in. Luckily I have a well equipped shop to work in otherwise being on a budget most likely the factory 7.5" would have stayed in there for a while. I'm excited to see someone with similar thinking make it into a bolt in style kit. What a tremendous product this will be come. Looking forward to more on this!
I looked at the other stuff being marketed, and has been marketed, for putting non-original rears (whether earlier 10 or 12 bolts , or 8.8s) in the G-bodies, and frankly didn't like any of it. Most of us already have, or already know whose suspension parts we want to use, and don't want to have to change that stuff. The rear needs to be a total bolt-in, period, with no other changes including changes in geometry that may not be desirable. That is what we are going to do, with both the 8.8, and later, a fabricated-style 9". Realistically, with the existing jig we could use any rear with a 3" axle tube.

Good question, I didn't know about that.
Isn't the A body rear about 2" wider than a g-body? How about width measurements of the 8.8 compared to the two chassis' rears?
I don't think its quite that much, but I'll measure both and post up measurements. A Mustang Housing may work better for the G-body, if you're trying to keep from narrowing it, but we'll have the capability to narrow to any width needed (and any housing end) so that will be less of an issue. From a cost and availability standpoint, the Explorer housing...even if it needs narrowing...may still be more cost effective.

.....It can always be strengthened with aftermarket girdles.......
And we already purchased an aftermarket cover with an integral girdle and cap studs.

Man that sounds cool. Having this available will be a great addition to the G-body (and a-body) market.

The stock length of the explorer rear is 59.5. So what I've seen guys with tri-chevys do is:
shorten the drivers side axle tube 3 inches and use another passenger side axle (pick up an extra axle at the junkyard, when you buy your complete explorer rear). Then you end up with a 56.5 wide rear end and only a 3/4 inch pinion offest to the left (instead of 2-1/4 to the right).
BulldawgMusclecars
02-06-2012, 08:06 AM
Ok, its been a while since I did the initial measurements, so I just checked all of them. On the original 8.2 BOP 10 bolt, the width (all width measurements are at the wheel mounting surface) is 61", with a pinion offset of 1". The Explorer rear is 59.5", with a 2.25" offset. So, we're only talking a 1.25 inch offset difference, which isn't enough to make a difference in the vehicles in question.
I haven't taken measurements on a G-body axle yet, but on those I feel sure we'll either have to narrow the Explorer housing, or possibly use a Mustang housing.

I'd be willing to bet that almost all of the people looking at or under the car won't know what axle they are looking at. And, I doubt that would be the one thing they would pick up on. If nothing else, I'll just point to YAC and point out it has some highfalutin' boxy axle to draw their attention away from the 8.8 :P

I know exactly what you are saying. I shaved the firewall on a car several years ago and due to time constraints didn't make the fender mounts the same (or even pretty) because I thought they wouldn't be visible once the car was assembled. I was wrong. No one but the guys who helped me build the car noticed - even at low key shows, but I never got past that I didn't do it until I sold the car. For a few minutes it would have taken to grab the fender from storage and hold it up and the hour or two invested in some scrap making the mounts symmetrical... You made the right decision.
Looks good.

Thanks guys! This car is going to get the wheels driven off of it, and will be at as many events as I can afford to attend. Saw the progress today at the Meet & Greet, and it's moving along quite well. The front suspension is mocked up with brakes; the transmission tunnel was fully welded in place and looks great; the rear axle jig was completed, and hopefully this week the 8.8 will get brackets tack welded on and we can mock it up to measure for wheels. Just a few other things fabrication wise to tackle, and the body will be ready to separate from the chassis to send it to powder coating.

car-part.com is a great place to pick up a motor, and usually in your own town. That, or go to ebay.com and type in "lq4 dropout". The axle I bought through car-part.com, and the local shop that had it sold it for $150 including delivery to the shop (about 40 miles from their yard). The rear axle has 4.10 gears, 31 spline axles, discs and a limited slip. Joe plans on buying quite a few of the axles and modifying them with the jig for anyone that wants to buy them. I'll also put him in touch with one of our freight companies, and he should be able to ship them affordably most anywhere.

Sorry, we have WAY too much time and $ in building the jig to give any detailed pics of it...suffice to say, its built like a battleship and will last through many rearend builds! We're looking to offer a pre-welded housing, in any stage of completion, at a VERY competitive price, so I think you will be pleasantly surprised when we have the pricing done.

We should have the first one done (for Sabre) by the end of next week. It will be pretty simple, since we're going with the stock housing width. I'm planning to do a narrower, '64-'67 version, for Lonestar. That one will get different housing ends, since we'll be using Z06 brakes on it.

The info you've posted about using an 8.8 is pretty interesting to me since it sounds like it might be a lower cost alternative to refurbing my 12 bolt with a new carrier and gears. What's your opinion?
BulldawgMusclecars
02-13-2012, 06:53 PM
Joe,
The info you've posted about using an 8.8 is pretty interesting to me since it sounds like it might be a lower cost alternative to refurbing my 12 bolt with a new carrier and gears. What's your opinion?. It depends. It would cost you a minimum of $650 for a new Posi, gears, and bearings for your 12 bolt. For a 1st gen F- body, the Explorer housing would be too wide, so you'd need a narrower housing. One of the Mustang housings is probably close enough, but depending on year you'd probably need to buy aftermarket axles ( to go 31 spline). The Posi and gears could come from an Explorer, along with the brakes. You'd also need a pair of leaf spring mounts and shock mounts. The 12 bolt would still probably be more cost effective in this case, since you already have it.

Yep sounds like the 12 bolt is going to stick around...

No, that's what we're secretly planning for your Camaro :P
We are going to look at leather in the next few weeks and then order. We could have saved a bit by going with vinyl, but for the smaller difference in cost, and for longevity we decided leather was the best choice. We are going to have leather on all seating surfaces, and then the parts you don't sit on will be a combination of leather and / or vinyl to save some. We bought used door panels that were good for not much more than the metal upper and swipe, and will use those to build new panels from. We ditched the stock armrests and door pulls, and will be doing something simple but cool. We will also be replacing the carpet and headliner to match.
For colors on the interior, we haven't made that decision yet. We've thrown around the concept of using a brown similar to the body color, but I keep coming back to black. The dash is black, and I like as dark as I can get, as when I am driving or racing, I don't want lots of reflection from lighter colored materials. I also don't want distractions that move my eye away from the course, and lighter colors tend to do that for me.

Ok, its been a while since I did the initial measurements, so I just checked all of them. On the original 8.2 BOP 10 bolt...
I realize your rearend use decision has likely already been made, but I just wanted to point out that all 71-72 Cutlass models came from the factory with a very good, non-c clip version of the 8.5" 10-bolt. Maybe the scalloped cover fooled you into thinking it was a 8.2 BOP. They do look similar with that cover, but Olds didn't use the BOP 8.2 after 1967.
For a comparatively minor investment, you could have upgraded to 30-spline axles and a posi or locker, resulting in a rear that would be at least as strong as the 8.8 and have the added benefit of positive retention axles. Aftermarket disc brake kits are readily available, obviously.
Just sayin'

Everything I have ever read said that '71-'72 Cutlass came with the 8.5 rear with bolt-in axles, but that isn't what was in this one. Most of those 8.5s did have a round cover, without the scallops, but this one had the scalloped cover and c-clip retention. I can only assume that someone put an earlier rear in the car at some point. I'd do some more checking for #s if it were still here, but its not. Like you said, if this car had the 8.5, it would be more than adequate for our purposes in this build...but budgetwise, it sill wouldn't have made sense . $300+ for aftermarket axles, a decent posi for $450+, another $300 for gears and bearings, vs. an inexpensive (Sparky got a screaming deal on this one, $150!) lightly used rear that has a posi and the gearing we wanted, along with 31 spline axles and factory disc brakes. Just upgrading the 8.5 to the same level would have eaten up $1500+, vs the maybe $250 materials cost we have in the 8.8. Would it really need the aftermarket axles? Probably not, at least for our purposes, but even without that we're still $1000 ahead of the game, and have a stronger rear. The only thing I don't like about the 8.8s is the c-clip axles, and that will be corrected in production versions of our 8.8 for those who want the upgrade. Unless you are drag racing, it really isn't necessary.
SparkyRnD
02-25-2012, 10:15 AM
And something to point out is that even if the c-clips in this axle break, the axle won't come out as the disc brakes hold it in place. But all good points. Since this is for an affordable build, the 8.8 just makes more sense. Also, if we kept the original axle, we'd have to pay someone probably $200-$400 to set up the gears properly, so that was factored in too.

It took a little longer than we expected, since the beefy Explorer housing doesn't leave much room for the upper control arm mounting. I had originally planned to run the tube supports around the front, but there just wasn't any way. The LCA mounts are off another stock 8.2 housing (not the Olds one that came in the car), and getting them cut off without damage, and fitting them to the tubes, took some time. In the future, we plan to produce our own LCA brackets. The uppers are based on Speedway pieces. Before this one is painted, we'll also fully weld the pumpkin to the axle tubes for added strength.

Still takes a lot of care, even with a plasma. I should have clarified that a bit, but since the Explorer housing has larger diameter tubes, they had to be ground, fitted to the jig, and ground again several times to get them perfect. We wanted as tight a fit as possible. Most of the time was spent figuring out the best way to do the upper mounts.

Sparky & Joe...it is very cool to have a vision, and to work hard and smart to make it all come together! Like I said, I wish I was on board here earlier. Seems the direction of the build( and I know this was the strategy) was to build a "hybrid of old and new" that we here in car loving land can realistically build, and not for too much money! I appreciate the pics and updates, and understand at the same time, you both have businesses to run, as well as putting food on the table for your kids. I hope, that when the finished "Sabre" is unveiled(sp?), you can post a list, or link to a website, where, when these parts go into production, we can purchase! I'm too deep into my '70 Vista right now, but I also have a '65 Vista that will be much more radical. I wouldn't mind using your parts on it! Anyway, keep up the good work guys, and thank you! Yes, our theme was to take a nice, older muscle car and make it fresh, safe and competitive, without breaking the bank and while retaining the style of the original car. I also like that many of the items in the build can be done in stages, as time and funds are available. That means that if you can't swing everything in the build right now, you can pick and choose the parts that are important to you and in what order you need / want them, and then build it in phases (ie: suspension and brake upgrades first, since those are safety items; then upgrade wheels and tires; then upgrade drivetrain and exhaust next; then paint / body, and then interior). I know too many people, myself included, that start a project and get in too far over their heads (either money or skill level wise), and the project takes years or longer to finish, if at all. This type of build and the planning that went into it before we even bought the car helped out a lot, and gave us a goal to shoot for. Then the Rushforth rendering gave us the road map of how to reach that goal, which was invaluable.
I LOVE seeing the high dollar builds in magazines, on television and on forums, but I know that to live within my means, I can't swing a 6-figure build. I look at the high dollar builds to get ideas and see what is possible, and appreciate the fabrication and dreams these guys come up with. That then inspires me to come up with my own ideas and concepts, and find a way to fit those in with my budget. Bulldawg is helping me get where I want, for what I can realistically afford. We talk every week about where the project stands, what needs to be done, where I am at money wise, and what we can upgrade or what we have to downgrade to stay on track. And it is HARD sometimes. But rather than letting things get out of hand, Joe has been great about making sure we stay on track.
Thanks for the link on the Vista, I'll check it out in a few minutes. We also have a project build website at www.projectsabre.com, although I need to give it a good solid update (hopefully I can carve out time this weekend).
I truly look forward to hammering on Sabre; I also look forward to cruising around town and to events.

Thanks! Once the build is finished, I'll compile a listing of all parts used Including part numbers, along with sources and average retail pricing. I do this on any modified build, especially considering that many of the cars we do aren't local and we won't be doing the future service work.
Most of these items are off the shelf, and can be purchased anywhere, but there are a few specific items that we knew from the start would likely become production parts. Since RnD owns the car, the radiator and overflow tank were a given, and it wasn't long after that the decision was made to build an afffordable, EFI-ready fuel tank. Those will be available through any RnD dealer, including Bulldawg.
The 8.8 rear, on the other hand, was something that just sort of happened. Although Sparky and I both own our own businesses and some have the mistaken idea that all business owners must be rich, neither of us are going to throw money at a project needlessly. There are some areas where it pays to not try to re-invent the wheel, if you're on a budget, and in this case we are trying to do only modifications that a determined guy working in his own garage can do. Plenty of hot rodders have adapted the 8.8 axle to their projects, but most were either leaf spring applications (easy), or to be blunt...they did it wrong, using Mustang housings with cast-in upper control arms mounts that are at the wrong angle, and requiring their own control arms be used. My goal with this project was to take an affordable, easily acquired rear with proven capability in the Mustang world (and those are weaker- all but the newest generation are 28 spline, with smaller axle tubes), and properly fit it to the car so that any control arms...stock or aftermarket...could be used without issue. We could have built a simpler fixture to locate the brackets, but since I work on a lot of A-bodies anyway it made sense to build it for the long haul, so that it can be used for any future A-body projects, and for anyone who desires a stronger rear for far less $ than an aftermarket 12 bolt or 9". This particular one is very basic, but it fits the needs of the project well, and changes can be made later if desired. Narrower housings, centered pinions, different housing ends for 9"-style axles to eliminate the C-clips, differentials and gears, additional bracing, better brakes, etc. area all posibilities. Oh, and these will be available for G-bodies, too...thats next!

As usual, great work and progress! The fixture for the 8.8 is killer...just gives a few more options for future builds. Will that be a part "produced" for public consumption later on? I came up with the idea of using an 8.8 for Sabre, and Joe was the one who figured out how to make it work, and make it repeatable (MAJOR undertaking).
For the wheels, 19's & 20's. The goal is to fit 275/30-19 and 305/25-20 tires. Joe should be measuring today for wheels, and we'll place the order as soon as we're sure what will fit. I'll also order tires at the same time so we can mock them up and be positive of what will fit.

Yep, I ordered with Jason Rushforth a few hours ago, and we're going to run 19x10 fronts with 275 / 30 tires, and 20x10 rears with 305 / 25 tires. The wheels are Rushforth 6-shooters with gold powder coated centers and polished hoops. I can't get over how great the stance is with the RideTech Complete Coilover Conversion! This car has a completely new attitude, and it's MEAN!

Today we mocked up the gas tank, and started planning the routing of the exhaust. If you'll notice in the rendering, Jason came up with a rectangular exhaust opening in the bumper, under the tail lights. This looks really good in my opinion, but there are a few obstacles in the way. For one, the exhaust either has to pass under the frame rail and back up (unacceptable), or run along the inside of the frame rail, and then go through it to exit in the correct location. To do this, we'll have to narrow the prototype tank for exhaust clearance, cut a hole in the rail, and reinforce it with round tubing (in this case, we're using 3.5 inch ID, to clear the 2.5 exhaust he's planning to run, and leaving the possibility of a 3" system for later down the road). The tubing will have a diagonal cut, so the exhaust won't have to make such a radical bend. We're using a Borla stainless steel, universal style exhaust system. We should have this done tomorrow, so that we can start off next week by taking the body off of the frame and prepping it for powder coating.

Well, at this point I'll be glad if my car is driving by end of April.I'm having to make some sacrifices of how "done" my car is because of finances getting thin and I've lost the help of my professor, our subs just don't know what he does. Right now I'm seeing the frame and suspension being completed except for the 9" swap. I should have most of the body work done but it will be in primer. I'm also slipping the 406 back in for my road trip out there, and I'll have to do the interior upgrade there too. Hmmm, sounds an awful lot like the only thing that will be done is the frame and suspension. OK, you win. Wah ha ha ha.... Lol! Looks like the Pumkinator will count as another Bulldawg build by the time it is "done". :)

it'll be nice to see it here, and see the last of the transformation in person!
I went out this morning and ordered the tires through Discount Tire. I ordered Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110's based on their reviews, ratings, knowing a few people that have used them, and the price point. I got DT to price-match Summit Racing's prices (killer deal), and after it was all said and done, it saved another $300 over what I was going to pay. Thankfully, that money is now needed for some other parts that we didn't put in the budget, that are now required.
I also went to our upholsterer's new shop and looked at leather samples, and I think we've nailed down the color for the interior. Tomorrow Joe and I are going to go to the paint supply shop and get a pint or a quart of the brown we're going to use, and use that to finalize the interior and stitching colors. It's definitely coming along, and I always forget how busy / hectic things get around the last half of a build!

A's are very similar, but the mounts are in different locations, and from what I've read the Cutlass has a few more mounts than the Chevelle does. We will see soon though. I ordered a Chevelle kit that had 32 bushings (most of the kids listed 28). Unfortunately there is nothing available in poly specifically for the A-body Cutlass, so we will have to either make this work, or order individual custom bushings once we see what fits.

No, that will be going away.
Today was a long day, but some good progress was made. I went to the paint supply shop and got some brown samples and some gold samples mixed up. I then took those back to Bulldawg where we painted a few stripes onto a piece of scrap sheetmetal. Once those dried, we took them to the upholsterer and we nailed down the colors for the interior.
After we finished there, we spent a good bit of time discussing the project with our bodyman, and as much as it absolutely pains me to say, we are going to miss the end-of-april deadline. The bodywork will take 2-3 weeks, and then it needs to cure for about a month before we go into paint. I was hoping all along that we could be done faster, but there really is no way to get around this and have a paint job that will last and look beautiful, without going through the month of curing before paint. Rather than assemble it in primer with sealer, drive around the RTOS, then bring it back, disassemble, and go through more body-work then paint, we are going to do it right the first time (saves money this way, since we aren't doing it twice). Right now we're going to shoot for beginning of June to be on the road, but we'll have to see if any other changes have to come about that will delay it.

Sounds like a good day's work Sparky. It's nice to see things come together even if it means a longer build time, I can definitely relate.
I'm actually glad to hear this, I'll get to see the master at work laying down the color. We'll be spraying my car there too, and since I want to do it myself, the more I get to watch and learn the better.
Maybe I'll even be able to help put the car back together, having watched this build from the beginning and then being able to be hands on part of it would be really cool.
SparkyRnD
03-18-2012, 10:40 AM
I agree, that part would be very cool.
It's hard to believe that it's already been 6.5 months since I first dropped off the car. Assuming everything goes well on the bodywork, it should only push us back 1 month. The good part is that while the car is sitting in primer curing, there is still a lot of other work that can get done (chassis, running fuel & brake lines, installing the suspension and drive train, exhaust, installing wheels & tires, et cetera). We'll also have the interior being stitched up at the same time, giving the upholsterer free reign to come over, test fit panels and such. Then, when the body is painted, we can then reinstall it on the chassis and start running wires and putting it all back together.
It will be great when it's done, as around here, there is a car show / cruise-in every weekend from April through October. Some of the recurring saturday evening shows / cruise-in's bring upwards of 800 cars, so there is ALWAYS something to do & see. Plus, with all the racing tracks (circle, oval, straight, curvy), there are usually really good events every few weeks, including autocrosses. Having Sabre finished and knowing it was done right without cutting corners will make it all the more worth while.
Yesterday I went back to see the upholsterer and put down the deposit, and he is placing the order for leather and thread and all the other materials. He said it would be here sometime next week and he can get started. Monday I'm supposed to go over to Bulldawg and they are going to mock up some f-body mounts under the Monte Carlo seats, and I am going to sit in the car and we'll measure if we have to move the brackets down or not. I know that Friday and Saturday Curt was stripping all the paint off the body, and Jeremy was welding up the last of the openings, including the mirror holes and the drip-rail gaps. Hopefully by Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, Joe will be bringing the body to the body guy to get started on. Also, the chassis should leave early in the week to the powder-coaters.

Its getting there...we're still stripping off the old paint, while Jeremy is fabbing up the new windshield wiper system (note, there isn't a provision for the old wipers on the new firewall!). I'll be here late today working on it, and will get it in epoxy late tomorrow.
BTW, I know some are wondering "Why isn't the bodywork being done in-house?". Well, there are a couple reasons. For one, Jeremy has been the body guy to this point, but with the increased amount of metal fabrication and repair his workload has increased, and I have been looking for a full-time guy to do finish bodywork. I had a good lead on one, and he's still a possibility for joining the team, but one of the most talented bodymen I have ever met became available unexpectedly, and his involvement is helping to keep the build schedule on track. So, while it technically isn't being done at Bulldawg, its definitely Bulldawg approved! Hopefully he'll also be assisting us on finish bodywork in the future on a part-time basis.

I wish my brother was still in the market for a job - he's an excellent paint and body guy and the reason my 68 looks as good as it does. The paint is nearly 15 years old and still shines like a new penny! Anyway, back on topic, I agree that waiting instead of rushing the build is the best choice. I hope you guys are still coming to RTOS! I'm still on track to have mine going in 2-3 weeks. :)

Lots of progress on Sabre! Jeremy has the metal work finished up, and about 90% of the body is stripped to the metal with only the jambs, around the windows, and other details to address. The body shell is now on the cart, almost ready to go to the body guy. I'll get pics up tomorrow.

snuck by the shop today on my way to UPS to drop off some radiators. Clark and Jose were blasting the last remnants of paint off Sabre, and it was looking pretty good! Jeremy had finished cutting the holes in the hood for the future heat extractors we'll be adding, and had boxed in the openings. Joe figured it would be in primer either this evening or tomorrow morning, and to the body guy tomorrow evening or Wednesday. It's looking good, and I wish I could keep it in bare metal as it looks amazing

The hood modifications...basically, the old lower skin was cut away where the louvered panels bolted up. New tabs are being made for one side, since the panel attached to holes drilled in the old panel. The whole opening is being boxed in, so that full strength is retained. Its actually stronger than before.

another benefit to the 68-72 A-Body, wide wheel wells. Found out today that the passenger front pan has about 40 or so pin holes from rust which we couldn't see before blasting. So that one will be getting replaced after the body work. Driver's side has 3 or so pin holes, but those can be cleaned and welded up. The hood looks killer with the heat extractor vents cut out and boxed in. It'll be a little while after being on the road before I have the new extractors made up and ready, but will be great once it's done and put together.

that's looking great Joe! And for Jeremy working on the floor, ah, to be young and healthy!
Also, we took advantage of the Matt's Classic Bowtie's sale on Morris Classic Concepts 3pt seat belts (saved almost $100 over Summit Racing's price)! I was going to buy them after the car was on the road, but couldn't pass up saving $100. I will use the MCC's for regular street use and to / from events, and then use the Schroth Rallye 4's for race weekends.
Thanks for this - I had no ideal MCC's belts existed. I wanted to put 3-points in my '70 Cutlass Sports Coupe, but was concerned about the odd 2-bolt upper mount point. Most aftermarket belts expect a single bolt there.
I'm assuming since you're using them that Cutlass seat belts are the same as Chevy and Pontiac A-bodies, as MCC only lists them for those two.
I'm eagerly following this build - I've been slowly (oh, so slowly) building up my '70. I particularly interested in that Explorer 8.8. I have the Olds 12-bolt 8.5" in mine, with 2.73 rear gears. The 200-4R overdrive I recently put in doesn't really like such tall gears in OD, so I've been looking around for a less-expensive way to get a limited slip and lower gears, and I wouldn't say no to rear disks. Looks like the Explorer rear may be the ticket. Has a price been established on that?

A price hasn't been determined yet, and will depend greatly on options and warranty. Sparky's is essentially straight out of the salvage yard, but in excellent condition. I'm a little hesitant to sell one that way, unless its without a warranty on the internals. More than likely, we'll offer the base package with a rebuilt Traction Lock, new bearings, and gears, and redrilled axles, along with a fully welded center section, new rotors, and reman calipers. I think we could do that for less than half the cost of a new 12 bolt. For an addtional amount, we'll use a bearing-style housing end and custom axles, and offer upgraded brakes, narrowing, additional axle tube bracing, etc. I may even consider selling a bare housing, or housing/axle package for those who want to do that part themselves.

Understood. Let us know when you've got baseline pricing on that, OK? Never even thought bout an 8.8 rear due to the different control-arm config, but you figured it out.
It's either that, or find a posi and gears for my 8.5" "12-bolt" O-type, and I'd still have to figure out disk brakes. On the other hand, I would still be able to use a W-27 rear cover... :)

One day last year a guy brought a recently purchased "great condition" 69 Camaro SS396 "numbers matching" car to a friend's shop for a quick look over. When I stopped by my friend brought me out to the lift to see the total rip off hack job issues on the entire car, including the street sign post that had been welded in where the frame was rotted out and the 10 bolt 8.5" rear that had been re-drilled and tapped to accept a 12 bolt cover!! Yes there were two sets of cover bolt holes under the cover! So, if you really wanted to go through the trouble this rip off mechanic did, you could always attach the W-27 cover to the 8.8...

The body does look great, but in all honesty there is a ton of work that was in it before it got to the epoxy stage. And, there is going to be about 3 weeks of 8 hours a day in the body work (and that is before paint), and that still won't be a perfect show car job (for those that are wondering). When cutting and welding metal, it can still tweak even a little which requires body work on the tail end. And, even though the car was described as all original, never been wrecked, we've found a few places where there were some hidden minor dents, which of course, take extra body work. But, the car was still the best of the bunch after months of searching, and was a great price for what i got.
The good part is that the car is in the best hands I could imagine have working on a car. Joe's body guy is one of the best in the business, and has an amazing eye for detail. He looks for the things I would never think to look for or ask about. I feel lucky to have the car in such capable hands.
Chassis: due to a few scheduling conflicts, we've had to reschedule bringing the chassis to the coaters. Hopefully, we can drop it off later in the week.
I spoke with Jason Rushforth about the wheels, and he thinks they'll be done in the next week and a half to two weeks. The tires are in, and are waiting at the shop to be mounted once the wheels arrive.
I also received the gauge package and new ABS overlay for the cluster from New Vintage, and HOLY COW they look cool! We are using a 6-gauge cluster, with tach and speedo in the center, and then oil / batt / volts / gas split on each side. In the dead center, we had them set us up with one of their killer indicator panels, that has turn signals on either end, and warning lights for check-engine, overheating, low oil, and brights. I'll get pictures up in the next day or so. The best part is that you don't have to hack up your dash to install them. You simply take the original plastic cluster housing out (unbolts from the dash), remove the factory gauges, and use a dremel to trim the original so that the new overlay will fit. Then use epoxy to secure it in place. Takes all of about 30 minutes from start to finish (plus wiring, but that is beside the point).

then again, if someone cared about what original cover it had, then I think they would miss the point of the car altogether. Plus, the 8.8 cover we are using has stud girdles for the main caps to allow it to have much higher HP without the caps flexing). W27 down the drain :)

I'm joining the party a little late guys, but just want you all to know this is a very exciting project you have going here for me. I have a '71 cutlass "S" also and had it stripped down to the bare frame and installed a Hotchkiss Extreme tvs package about 5 years ago. And there it sat due to job loss, no funds and lack of direction. I now have the means and a renewed interest in making my "S" into a competent autocrosser. Drag racing was the original plan, but too few dragstips too far away from where I live. There is an autocross facility not more than 20 miles away. :fingersx: So good luck on project Sabre. Now that I am finally registered, I hope you don't mind the occasional question. :) btw: I am soooo glad someone has come up with a way of making use of the opening for those silly pot metal faux hood scoops. I have two hoods that have them and plan on replicating your design. I hope you will make the resulting design product available to your fellow oldsmobilers. :twothumbs

'71cutlasluvr, welcome to the group! Would love to see pictures of your build (start up a thread in this section and post as many pics & details as you can). Us Olds' guys can't get enough of the A-Body threads! As for the hood heat extractors, credit for the idea goes to Jason Rushforth, the designer for Sabre. We will eventually make a bolt on replacement insert so others can do the same (of course, you'd have to modify your hood for it to function).
Geoff, never is enough time! Right now the body guy is working 8hrs a day on it, and hopefully we only have a week and change to go before it's ready to sit. Chassis still needs to go out, but will leave this week (I'll end up renting a trailer most likely and hauling it to the coaters), so hopefully it'll be done and back by the time the body guy is finished.
If I make it down your way, would love to check out his Cutlass collection.

Thanks for the welcome Sparky. Kinda new at this forum thing but will try to make an attempt to post some pics soon. Thing is, body is back on frame, but now I plan on putting the body on a rottisoire (sp?) to clean up the undercoating and do the the body repairs right. But have some pics of the rolling chassis with the hotchkiss extreme tvs components sans front sway bar. Will post those.. better than nothing I guess. It's a good starting point I guess but perhaps not the best combo as technology has come so far since I put the suspension on several years ago. looking forward to see what you guys do so I start in the right direction.
Glad to hear about the heat extractors... Jason sure has some talent... His rendering of what project sabre will look like is soooo cool! The perfect stance, paint and wheels. I changed the color of his rendering to blue as my car is same and it's on my laptops desktop! It's a great motivator. Hope the project goes smoothly for all involved. btw: Does Jason design and build the wheels that are on the rendering?? They really set the whole package off. If so, Gotta save my pennies in hopes of getting a set for my project also.

btw: added several pics of the chassis at different stages of prep, suspension install and body on before engine install. Decided to put the 468 in the 'vert when the stock 350 became troublesome.

The rest are on a cd somewhere. Will post on a separate thread when I find them. Added the pic of both cars just before the big block swap into the 'vert. No worries. I have a couple of 455 cores waiting for a buildup. It's only time, and $, right??:)57931

I'm with you SinCityCutty. But.....I kind of regret buying and installing the Hotchkiss system so long ago... seems like there's a lot more options out there now. One thing I can offer about the Hotchkiss setup, although I didn't assemble the car to the point of road ready weight wise, (only the body sans glass, doors and big block with aluminum heads and tranny) I expected a more radical drop in height from stock. Way too much space between the wheels and wells. Pretty sure I can't afford an air ride system (unless it's a must have for optimum ride height), so hoping I can modify the hotchkiss system somehow to get the ride height to a more autox friendly stance. We shall see, eh? :fingersx:
C'mon Sabre! Show us what we can do with our Cutlass'!:worship:

I also ordered a front end bolt kit from Tamraz on ebay, along with a 10pc seal kit. All the seals are from MetroMMP, and are their Softseal style. I also had to buy a rubber bumper kit (hood bumpers, hood to fender bumpers, door bumpers, trunk bumper, etc) as mine were all shot.

Got those and delivered to the body guy today so he can finish aligning everything. Looks like we're going to have 3-4 weeks total of bodywork due to some wavy spots and a few hidden dents that needed a good bit of work.
One of the parts of the Cutlass front fenders that always drove me crazy (not in a good way) are the pot-metal fender trim at the front. They don't match anything, they never align properly, and they always were an eyesore to me. So after talking with the body guy, we decided to have him fabricate replacements from sheet metal and weld it to the fenders, and then bodywork it for a smooth look. Here is the passenger side in a not-yet-finished state:

The reason for that is the '70 cutlass. That bit is chrome and matches up with the hood trim on the '70. '71 and '72, they changed the grilles and hood, but not the fenders. That's always seemed odd to me as well, but I guess it saved a few bucks for GM.

Uggg those pictures bring back memories of body work (insert shudder here)... I'm sure it's not that bad if you know what you're doing and can hit it 8 hours a day every day but doing it 2-3 hours at a time maybe once a week, all while learning what you're doing, was the worst!

Ok Sparky. I know how it is when you're on a project... Post pics when you can...
But Man! Those wheels are the coolest! And I agree with Chris.... sans hardware makes them real clean and uncluttered IMHO.... it really works with that style of spoked wheel. I noticed in the rendering there wasn't any hardware either... or anything I could see anyway... Jason really nailed the look in the drawing and staying true to the concept is the way to go. Now that I see them as they will appear on project sabre, there's no turning back... the $ will be obtained one way or the other. My wife is gonna kill me though, but it'll be worth it. :machine:
As you say, we olds guys will all stand out from the rest with Jason's wheels on our rides. Something to look forward to, I'd say. :fingersx:

Well I'm doubly impressed. I do some amateur home powdercoating of brackets, intakes, rocker covers and stuff and have never seen a powder finish that has a metalflake sparkle that is so well distributed throughout the powder that makes it look that close to paint. I agree Joe... no need for clear when the powder looks that good.

I had seen Rushforth wheels many years ago, and even contacted him for a now-defunct project that I wanted to buy his wheels for, but the timing & budget weren't right back then. On this build, I knew I wanted Jason to create the rendering concept, and I knew I wanted to run his wheels. And I have to say, I am 100% pleased on both accounts, as he exceeded my expectations on both sides.

I will also upload some pictures of the roughed-in body work tomorrow. We're going to let it sit and cure for 30 days, and around May 27th it'll be ready to start finish body work.
During that time, the upholsterer will be working on the interior (which will be pulled before finish body work), and Bulldawg will be reassembling the chassis, suspension, running fuel & brake lines, installing wheels / tires, and cleaning / painting / assembling the engine and trans. Once they have them installed, I'm going to measure for and get the driveshaft modified (both in length, and also changing to the Explorer style flange from a Ford). I will also clean up and rattle-can the rear axle during that time too.

I knew about Jeff's notch back from when it was first built, and wanted to have something that was equally as cool, but looked very different (to me there is no point in building the same thing everyone else has; it has to be different enough to not be compared to others). While we both share gold wheels, I think there is enough difference between them that they'll stand apart very well.
Btw, does Jeff still own that Cutlass?
