      unfixable shake...

ok so i have this shake in my car and its been there forever, tried some stuff here and there mostly just getting the wheels balanced but thats not doing it i have new shocks, new ish tires (had the shake with these tires, cant remember if it was there with that last ones =/) and an alignment and Ive had them balanced several times in san diego and here in knoxville discount tires and the last time they said they where all in decent spec and one was turned to hope fully help but yet it is still there at above 60 mph what should i do to test what it can be. no one has said that it looks like my wheel is about to fall of and im positive its not a bent axle but i may test it to be 100% sure im really irritated with this so if you have any ideas please let me know!

borrow a set of rims and tires and see if the car still does it. If it only starts around 60ish to 70 and then goes away most likely its a balancing tire issue. If i could see the tires i would be able to tell you

      Could be a few things.

      1. Your wheels may not be hub centric or lug centric. This causes trips to the tire shop for a continuous rebalance but it still vibrates.

      2. If a wheel had a radial hop and even if it balanced to zero it will still hop.

      3. Drivetrain related but that just requires lots of looking. I have seen pinon angles under acceleration cause a shake but more noticable in the seat, shifter, etc...

As mentioned above, have you checked the pinion angle? A couple degrees made a huge difference in my car. Also, what type of transmission mount do you have?

Sounds like wheels/tires. I would try a new set on a proven smooth ride if you can.

I have the same issue on my truck, new wheels tires and cant get the shakes to go away.. either the tires are crap (got them new from "discount" tire or somethings up with the wheels??

PTS, what do you mean 'radial hop'? What is that?

I would eliminate the wheels and tires before you go looking elsewhere.. just my 2 devaluated cents.

Have you checked your inner tie rods. Sometime loose inner tie rods will exhibit the same symptoms of out of balance wheels. Another thing to keep in mind is to check your tie rods with the wheels supported, sometimes a loose tie rod goes unnoticed because it will tighten up when you jack up the vehicle and the wheels hang down.

I agree that you should steal a friends wheels first though.

Some punctuation would really help to know what you are saying. Also knowing what kind of car you have really helps...

A wheel/tire vibration is very different than a driveline vibration. Wheels and tires spin at anywhere between 3-4 times slower than the driveline, depending on your ring and pinion ratio. Anything that is out of whack and that rotates at wheel speed will cause more of a slow whao...whao...whao....whereas a driveline vibration will be more of a buzzing and most likely cause the rear view mirror to get blurry.

You can check radial out of round on a wheel balancer. Just stick it on there and watch the wheel for up and down movement, anything noticeable is too much. I work as a tech for a police agency, and we bend 3-7 wheels a month radially. A wheel can "zero out" on a balancer and still be out of balance, just like an alignment can be "all in the green" and still pull. if the wheels are worth any money just look for a shop with a "road force" balancer, it will check the wheels and tires separately and allow you to match mount. Most Chevrolet dealerships that have certified C6 specialists will have the balancer but they can be hard to find...

This pic exaggerates it, but this is basically what happens:

This is the balancer you want:

i have a 68 camaro, and i have never felt the difference between a drive line issue or a wheel issue. i can feel it in the seat and the door locks shack/rattle. As far as figuring out my angle im pretty lost i may end up making a video if this makes no sense but ill try my best: i jacked up the rear end and put jack stands underneath it so its still under its own weight, i then messured the angle off my subframe connectors. All these angles go the same way not sure if it is positive or negative but they all go the same direction, if you are looking at the car the front is to the left and the rear is to the right. all the angles go up to the right because the rear end is jacked up but here are my measurements: subframe connector angle=1 degree, drive shaft angle=1 degree, pinion angle=2 degrees. i hope that makes sense

In my 88 325is, the center support bearing for the driveshaft (2 piece unit) went out and caused a hell of a vibration from 60-80. As Andrew said, it caused a loud humming type of sound and rattled everything.

In my mom's 04-ish Sonata, the front tires were shot. Radials were showing. Anything above 60 caused the steering wheel to shake and everything started to rattle. Basically felt like the car was on a bumpy road.

It could just be cheap tires/wheels. I used to have Torq Thrusts on my Nova and they vibrated above 60. Once I put the BMW wheels on, the vibrations went away. Both sets of wheels had Nexen tires.

Nobody has mentioned this yet but broken belts in the tires will cause this as well. I had a car that ate right rear tires they would only make it about 20,000. The vibration would change depending on the speeds I drove, it would also not always vibrate at the same speed. If you run your hand around the tire the tread blocks will be uneven if the belts are broke.

      Tony-
'Radial hop' is lateral runout. It's almost the same as having an out of round wheel.

guys are over complicating it. Start with the rims and tires bc that should be a quick easy fix. Seems like too many people are jumping on the worst case wagon.

Definitely change the wheels and tires first you may have a broken belt in one of the tires.
