Would a third gen box bolt up to my 68 firebird and have the right fittings for an LS? I've read about a guy using an 89 iroc box but I don't have the details. Is there a power box that would mount up and hook up to the ls pump that I could get remanufactured?
thanks
Scott

Changed my search by taking "box" out of the terms and found that the iroc box will fit, I also need the rag joint. I know its metric but the same as the ls? I'm not rdering a Lee box and have read about the cpp horror stories so won't go that way either. Any thing I need to look out for with this box?

Just remember that the internal steering stops in an IROC steering box "may" not be in the correct position for your vehicle resulting in a possibly limited turning radius.

Mike, I'll keep that in mind.
Hifi - Are you telling me I could get an ls box? Was it a bolt in? Wouldn't the fittings already work with an ls engine? Anybody got the number for Lee?

Here you go http://www.lee-powersteering.com/ 818 768 0371. A jeep grand cherokee box will work also, but the same issues with the steering stops. Just need to change the valving in the pump I think. Lee can do that.

I had no idea. Are you 100% sure?

I had read the same thing but unless someone actually has one under the hood to verify how it works I would be skeptical.

grab an F41 quick ratio box from any 86-92 Formula or Iroc Z. you won't have any turning radius issues with it-I use the stock configured boxes all the time on my swaps without having to change the valving....however, having said I have to admit I use pretty wide tires up front for maximum grip so that helps. If you run narrow wheels up front, you could have a turning radius issue. For this box to work with your stock front center link, you need to use the stock pitman arm from the donor fbody or, use a stock 67-69 power steering pitman arm-either will work on the later style fbody boxes.

Awesome. Call Lee for fittings, maybe hoses and I now have part numbers thanks to the links.
Thanks guys!

The 3rd gen f-body pitman arm will not work with a 1st gen f-body. It is completely different. Use the correct year P/S pitman arm for the car that the box is going into.

That's the plan.

mike i used a 89 pontiac formula one ws6 3rd gen box in my 72 chevelle, you have to remove the steering stops in the front and rear inside the box then youll get turning radius back to stock.use your old pitman arm and front cover from old box that round deal held in with snap ring i used lees aluminum adapters that press into box where the hoses go into and you can use your stock p/s. pump hose, thats if you have stock saginaw pump, got rag joint from lee too.give tom a call he can walk you through the process cuz when you take the box apart you have to put the ball bearings in right order there smaller, bigger order .really important or box could lock up.toms very nice and has mass skills with these steering gears.good luck.phil

I just picked up one of these for my second gen along with some aftermarket gauges that I'm hoping I can make work. About the box, does it bolt right into the holes of the old box of a second gen subframe?

Just for some clarification for this thread. The Grand Cherokee box is a 14:1 ratio box, and will bolt right up. I would also reccomend getting the steering shaft out of it while you're there, no rag joint and has a surprising amount of movement to it once you get it broken loose. If you are worried about getting turning radius you can get an S10 ZQ8 box, it has the largest sweep of any of the 12.7:1 boxes from the factory.
