Well, this is what I have to start with. Named it project TechnoStang because I plan to incorporate a lot of technology into this buildcentered around an in dash touchscreen (automation control is my day job). This will be used purely as a street car and any ideas are welcome.

Some updates today........I ran across a 2004 Aluminum block 4.6L and a set of 4V heads so looks like I will be going the modular route. I will need a rotating assembly for it and recommendations are welcome. I will most likely put a turbo on it. Also talked to a body shop so may get it in sooner than I thought.

So I take it you're planning on something big for the front end of this car? Tube frame?

Wesley J
01-12-2011, 05:55 AM
Nice. I'm going the same route, 4.6L 4V. I've been wanting to add a turbo as well but have decided against it due to packaging. My car ('67) is significantly wider and I'm going with a tubular front end w/struts. I'll be interested to see what front end you go with and how you package the turbo.

I am leaving my options open though. I'm planning for a ~400 HP NA motor at about 10:1 so I'm still open for some pressurizing. These motors run cool and have such good heads that you can easily throw 15 psi at them at 10:1 with out issue.

I look forward to the build!

Cheers,

Wes

Oh ya, rotating assembly: I went with used cobra stuff. The forged crank (96-98, 03-04) is supposed to be good to 900HP and 8500 rpm. The 03/04 cobra rods are Manley H beams good to similar power levels (96-98 cobra rods are junk). They can be had used for $200-300 each.

Not sure what you know about mod motors but stay away from the B heads if you can, you cant find intakes very easily.

Cheers,

Wes

Yes, exploring options now but regardless the shock towers are coming out :-). Thanks for the tips on the crank and rods and heads.

Nice project! I am also a fan of the 4V engine. They are very efficient at making power. Mine has dynoed over 500 hp NA. As Chunger illuded to, Its a wide engine due to the double overhead cam design. This will require you to remove the shock towers. There are several manufactures on this board that can help. I would start by looking here www.totalcostinvolved.com/mustangf&r_intro.cfm

Put Jake to work and did some de-greasing. Car smells less musty now :-). Picking up the 32V 4.6 tomorrow. I really need some suggestions for the front and rear suspension. Been browsing posts and the TCI looks pretty good......

Nice project! I have 3 customer Mustangs in the shop right now (a '66 gt coupe, a '67 "Gt500E" convertible, and a '65 fastback that is getting the R-model treatment). None are getting mod motors unfortuantely...I've been itching to do one.

Lot's of work to do before I get into changing out the suspension and being ready for the engine. Might as well go ahead and have the machine work being done. Have to multi task to get these things done!

Hi Wes..........I am following your build. I plan to check out your build when I am up in Calgary around May.

I look foward to it. You mentioned a touchscreen early on and I'm guessing you're a wizard at programming Crestron gear, LOL. You're not actually integrating Crestron stuff into the car are you? I'm a Home Theatre guy, used to do some PC based control stuff, now I'm using my iPad for the HT control and whole house audio but I digress...

I'm looking at a mobile PC/touch screen for controlling the Megasquirt3 thats going in so I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

Wes

I am going to be integrating Crestron into the car :-). I am leaning towards an iPad built in that controls the windows, AC, ignition, fuel system, etc. I am going to do some research and let you know what I find on the Megasquirt3

Wesley J
02-16-2011, 06:53 AM
So, can you expand on the hardware you'll be using for IO with the car?

Crestronwizard
02-16-2011, 09:01 AM
I will have more of a solid list soon but primarily will be based around the new Crestron 3 series processor along with relays that I can control. The EFI control will still be third party but I will have it on the touchscreen.

Wesley J
02-17-2011, 11:24 AM
I'd love to see something wifi or BT based so one could use an iPad. Kinda like what Innovate Motorsports does for their obd2 reader.

I think I'll roll my own with a mobile pc and use the iPad as my display device.

Well, I learned two things today. (1) A plasma cutter is the most awesome tool ever invented. (2) It has been way too long since I've done any welding. I cut out the rear floor pans and did a better job on the second one. Will attempt to weld in correctly next time that I can make it out to the garage.

Hi Guys......need some help making a decision. I will most likely need to do some frame repair (maybe just the extensions). I am already planning to do a coil over conversion and get rid of the shock towers to make room for my Cobra engine. So here is the question. Do I just go all in and get a Chris Alston chassis (I don't have Wes's skills to make one from scratch) or just put in the repair rails and move on. Thanks!

Since you ask - I vote for the whole new frame. One, you've already got it mostly torn down, so it's not like it's that much extra work, and (2) you're going to have to do something with the front end. To me, it doesn't make much sense to do all the work that the front end is going to require and then *not* do much to the rest of the car.

So, I'd say, why stop in Chicago when you really want to go to New York?

A couple of friends and I carried the car outside today. It's a little heavier than it looks! Now I can clean the garage. Going to cut out the floor completely to make way for an Art Morrison Max G frame :-). Finished removing most of the little metal that I needed to. All that's left is taking out most of the firewall. My wife looked at it today and said " There's more you can actually take off?". Funniest was my oldest's comment " Dad, didn't we pick this car so we wouldn't have too much body work?" Well son, there's not much body left, does that count??? :-)

OK - worked on the car a bit today. But first - a new addition to the garage/shop: A Miller Diversion 180 TIG welder. It's an awesome unit that runs off 120V or 220V - whatever it takes. Also, didn't really want to spend time building my own welding table - so I bought one of Millers.

Hmmmmmm.........you set all this up in my garage?? :-)

Wesley J
05-02-2011, 04:45 AM
You'll be happy with that welder. I've got last year's 165 and its great, I've burnt a lot of rod with that thing and its still running perfect. Not sure if you're a welder or not but I've moved to the 2% Lanthinated tungsten (NOT 1.5%) and its been great. I use it sharply pointed for everything, steel, aluminum and stainless and it works fantastic. If you're using the right diameter for the amperage then it holds a sharp tip, even on AC.

Well, as it turned out, there was an update notification to your thread and one to mine as well that came one right after the other. I just clicked on the wrong one

Anyway, the Miller TIG is a great machine. I see you have some Lincoln stuff there (as do I), but for my first venture into TIG, this machine is as easy as they say it is. And, did I say it runs off 120V? Really slick. More expesive than MIG, but IMO, worth the extra $$$. I have a Millermatic 130 MIG that's on loan from my father-in-law if I need it, but since I didn't have a welder of my own, I went the TIG route.

I've posted a few pics of on my thread, as to not take away from yours.

With that frame, even with your planned power adders, I'd be looking at what's lightest. One overdrive is plenty, and first gear is a joke, even with a stock motor...

The reason for the high mph is a 7800 rpm redline, makes a big difference. First gear will be quite useful as this will be my daily driver.

The frame itself wasn't too bad (maybe $5k??) but I went all in on a total package and spent $17k including shipping. But that was the frame, full IFS front suspension, triangulated 4 link rear, complete Strange Engineering 9" rear (well, all the parts, I put it together), 13" Lightweight Wilwoods all the way around - 6 piston front and 4 rear, sway bars, I think that's about it.

I noticed the bushings between the frame and the body. Will the body be removable? Is there a particlar reason for changing from unibody to body-on-frame? I understand that the car will will be stiffer with the dedicated frame, but I'm wondering if it would work just as well integrated with the body via welds.

Great work! I'm really enjoying your project.

What's the width between rear frame rails on your Chassis? I just designed a 1st gen Mustang tank for my Barracuda project - take a look at it on my thread. it's 33.5" x 19.5" x 7.5" - my rails are at 34"

Nice exhaust outlets, however, that's going to severely limit your fuel tank from being in the stock location. If you do, it's going to be quite narrow, or you'll have to shave the corners. On my 65 mustang - the exhaust comes out the rear GT valance and it's a VERY tight fit next to the tank.

What have you got planned for it? Are you going in the trunk - aka fuel cell?

Crestronwizard

Wow, I thought mine was a ways back! Nice!

My dampner is directly above my rack, which is likely a fairly similar locaction to yours. You're engine appears to sit quite a bit higher than mine though. I'm basing my engine height on the T-56 bellhousing, not the oil pan. My oil pan in its current form would likely be < 3" from the ground but it well see heavy modification. My bellhousing will be about 5.5", with the crossmember just in front of it being the lowest point at about 5", with the option to lower the car to that ~4" ride height.

Looking awesome though.

Wes

Thanks for the pics Wes. Is yours body dropped like mine?

Sorry, not sure what you mean.

Sorry, not sure what you mean.

:) The floor of the car was cut out and the bod "dropped" to lower the car without lowering the frame. So essentially the floor is now 3 - 4" higher than a stock one and everything else seems higher that is bolted to the frame .... Engine, Tranny, etc.

After some deliberation the engine is coming forward about 4 inches (roughly to where you have yours) and going down at least 2" , maybe more. Anthony @ Tommie Vaughn (I can't say enough good things about dealing with this guy) hooked me up with a trick Moroso pan and pickup that will get me the needed ground clearance. I have decided to go Twin Turbo, which was my original plan. I will have a lot of updates as all that comes into place. I really want to go to some events this year. Can anyone make some recommendations? Thanks!

Man, my lisdexia tends to better the get of me....

My floor is not dropped up front. The floor of the mustang slopes from front to back so what I did was build my frame such that it protruded into the car starting at the front of the front seat pan. That way it wouldn't impede the ergonomics/floor of the driver. I'd hate to sit in the back though ;-) I'm tall enough that I need every inch of headroom for a helmet.

Can you send me a link for the oil pan/pickup? I'm at the point now time wise that I'm willing to spend a bit of cash to not have to fabricate absolutely everything...

Oh, and twin turbo?! #1 are you nuts and #2, where the hell are you gonna put them? LOL. Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Cheers,

Wes

Thanks for the info! I'm going to get it ordered right away!

Love the TT thing. I'm a turbo guy and have spent hours devouring all reference material pertaining to design that i could find. I've gone back an forth quite a bit on it but came to the realization that this will be my 4 wheeled daily driver and 510 hp should be enough to get me into trouble, especially on the autocross. I'd be doing the same as you if I was going as balls deep as you though.

Cheers,

Wes

Twin tailpipe turbos would give a nice look from the rear

One big challenge on this motor is that it has a HUGE range of CFM that it makes power on. If you look at the range from max torque to max hp, its a pretty huge RPM range (4000+ rpm), and hence, CFM range. It'll be fun to size the turbos so that they give you the most drivable horsepower over that range.

Oh ya, checked the price locally for that pan and pickup... I'll be modding mine as originally intended...

yeah, Bill & Anthony say this thing is going to have an awesome wide powerband. Should be fun.

You need me to pack an extra pan in my suitcase? lol

Question... do you have the engine solid mounted? Because otherwise the belt tension will be changed by the movement of the engine...

No, The mounts have Poly Bushings. I will have a tensioner on the belt to keep that adjusted. Thanks for pointing it out.

Spent a ton of money on parts this week. Hopefully will have all the exhaust parts, steering, A/C, pedals, hinges and tank soon. Will give us lots to do. The welding around the windshield and rear glass is almost complete (making the glass look like it does on new cars). Pics soon.
