I have a question, did you modify the original bumper to make the seamless rear or did you custom fab it?
Also your are building the exact vision i had for my car (with a bigger budget) with a few exceptions and hope to see you at mustang week if you are going good luck on the rest of the build.

It is for the windshield wipers. There is a worm gear that enters through the hole in the side. It runs back to the box under the black box that's in Post #535, pic 2. It pulls and pushes the worm gear, making the wipers move :)

Still waiting on the tune. Spent today getting the power steering buttoned up. Also, discovered that the only way the lower radiator hose is going to work is to be AN. So ordered all the stuff for that. Expect better video next week.

Finally was able to load the startup tune in today. I won't go into all the details but the short version is the SCT LiveWire TS does not work with the Ford crate engine computer. The X3 worked great and it's all up and running. Now to figure out what's rattling in the clutch and get back to important things like finishing the car!!!!
A special thanks to Eric Brooks with Brooks Tuning for putting in extra time for an issue that wasn't his and to Anthony Hokestra down at Tommie Vaughn in Texas. If you need great service, call that guy!

I've learned something over the last few years of working on this car. The stuff that at first seems like it's going to be super hard, like making the brackets off the roll bar for the hood hinges to mount to, turns out to be easy the stuff that looks easy, like radiator hoses, turns into a nightmare.

Thanks everyone. The rest of the wiring is next. I have issues with moving on to the next thing on the list and coming back to fix a problem. So I've fallen behind while fixing various issues. New one presented itself friday, either the alternator isn't putting out or it isn't happy just sitting at idle. I'm back on it this weekend. I have some video of it running and will post next. Next week I'll get some good driving video. Eric Brooks has been dialing in the tune for me.

It didn't work at all. I am going to take the old one and have it tested. May have just been bad out of the box or maybe it wouldn't run backwards (even though several reputable sources said it should).

I've wondering this ever since I figured out why Crestron is part of your login... Exactly what is this stuff and what will it do in your car. The best I could tell from the manufacturer website is that it is high end home automation.
Thanks
Crestronwizard
03-05-2015, 04:44 PM
Yes, it is primarily used for residential and commercial automation. It's actually what my day job consists of. After some discussions with Jay Harris of Infinity Box , I figured out how I could control most everything in the car using Crestron gear interfaced to his stuff. So I'll have a 10" touchscreen in the dash for controlling lights, power windows, heat & AC, start, etc. it will also show boost, water temp, oil pressure etc. I'm using two smaller 5" ones above the steering wheel that will usually show speed,RPM and whatever else I come up with. There aren't any side mirrors. Cameras I've strategically placed show that on a screen that goes where the rear view mirror usually is and can also be shown on the touchscreens.

Although car stereo purists hate to hear them called horns.............they are basically compression drivers mounted to horns. The idea is to solve the audio staging problems that are inherent in cars. The left speaker is always closer to the driver than the right so it is harder to get a balanced, stereo image. By using compression drivers you can physically place the drivers far forward. This makes the distance between left and right more even. Usually they are mounted under the dash but since my car is getting a custom dash, I am experimenting with mounting them higher.
Awesome idea, horn in a car...

Being an audio guy (like, I've done this for a living since '93) I remember when "Horns" were a big deal. Now they're kinda rare to see. IIRC, Mark Eldridge used to have a Toyota 4 runner, and had mounted the horns where the dash and windshield meet essentially extending the mouth of the horn. He did exceptionally well in competitions with this setup.
I see a lot of people build sub enclosures using a technique similar to what you're using, but before you get too far into it, might I make some suggestions. First, you'll probably be better off to use fleece instead of the (what looks like) grille cloth you are using now. It can't handle the weight of the resin without distorting the shape. Ideally after that you'd grind it down and add several layers of mat and resin (typically 5-7 layers of 1.5oz mat and a good quality (read: Get it from a fiberglass supplier or boat place) resin. As an added step I'd probably add some deadener to the inside. You want it to be solid so it doesn't resonate (or break due to the high pressures in the box). You've done such an amazing job on this car and I'd had to see you have a failure on the sub enclosures. Can't wait to see what/how all the Crestron stuff works out once it's up and running.
What other gear do you plan to run? Looks like a JL C5 midbass or maybe ZR800? Tough to tell since we don't carry JL anymore.
Edit: I see you are in NC. I'll be down that way (near Greensboro) for a car audio get together at the end of April.

Thanks Guys. I was lucky to have done car audio professionally in Burlington, NC in the 90's. Which happened to be the home place of Richard Clark. Those that know high end car audio from back then will remember his Buick Grand National. I spent a few long hours while the top engineers in the car audio world would sit around and chat about all the "best" gear.
I guess I should have waited to post pics until they were done. Here they are after the fiberglass then bondo then more layers of fiberglass. More bondo and sound deadener inside and out.

Jay, I am going to use Rockford 8"' in the doors for midbass. (Although , you're right, that is a C5 in the pic). HD900/5 amp to run everything. We'll wait and see if it's enough power. Didn't spend a lot on the head unit as I didn't need a bunch of extra features. It goes in the trunk and will be controlled from the touchscreen upfront. It's a Pioneer DEHX9600BHS with 4 volt out. I really didn't intend to go overboard with the stereo system. Damn project creep :)

03-18-2015, 05:35 PM
It's not uncommon to see someone spend $100k on a car and then use the cheapest stereo equipment, or install it themselves because they saw it on YouTube, or something, so it was looking like it might be headed that way. Looks much better now. I get a pretty big influx of classic/custom cars before the Woodward Dream Cruise up here, and it's always people wanting to cheap their way through the stereo.
A friend of mine runs Horns in his GTI, and another guy on a forum we're both on is running them in a new Passat CC. We were talking about the use of horns, so I posted a link to this build.
I can't wait to see how all the automation/interfacing stuff comes together!
HD900/5 is a nice amp. I used to have one. Now I'm running a trio of mid 90s Sony Mobile ES amps.

HD1200/1 on each, or to run both? I've done a couple installs with 13TW5's in the recommended .8 cubes (at least back then) and on a 500/1 they were quite impressive. I don't think 500 watts would be enough for two. Nice subs tho.

Do you mean what will it be wrapped with or what is on it currently?
Going to see how the mounting goes for the door speaker. Building a metal extension, where part will be in the door and part out. It looks ridiculously large right now but once sunk in some and with the armrest, I think it will work. It only needs .25 cu ft so first attempt will be to fabricate an enclosure.

A few updates. Been putting in a couple of long days this week. Decided to not put the 8's in the doors. Just too cumbersome looking and no room to build a proper enclosure. Talked with Eric Holdaway and have a cool alternate locale. Will update pics when it's done and works. Installed the door pops, wired up the power windows. Made a mount for the gauges, even though they don't get seen. Running some more wires today and hopefully knocking my punchlist down faster than I am adding to it.

Sad day in my household. Those that have followed my build since the beginning know that I went out and purchased this car as a project to busy myself after my father passed from cancer. His twin brother, my uncle Wally, went with me when I got the project and has encouraged me the whole build. I had planned for him to come up next month and take the first ride.
On January 4th he was hit head on by a driver going the wrong way down Interstate 295 in Jacksonville, Fla. He passed away on the 8th. His entire adult life was dedicated to helping others, from being a medic in Vietnam to running the tissue donor bank (he was returning from performing a case), he always had a good joke to tell and tried to help whenever possible. Life is short, make the best of it and if you're out drinking and having a good time.........think about this post and take a cab home.

Sorry for your loss. I know you'll think about them every time you get near your project and the inspiration that they have given to you.
Spoke with Jean-Noel yesterday afternoon, he is within a hours drive from the house. I might get him to do a little on my build, if I ever get to that point. I really like the work he has done, that is top notch, along with the rest of your build. Very impressive.

Sorry about your Uncle... He'd be proud of the Build, as would your Dad. Although I'm sure they are Both watching over it now and smiling...

Wow I just saw your post and I am so sorry. I just can't understand why in this day and age that people still get behind the wheel of a car after they have had a few drinks. This makes me so mad and scares the hell out of me. Once again I am so sorry and my prayers are with you and your family.

Sorry to hear about your uncle man, that's crazy about the wrong way driver since 295 is a divided highway.

Sorry for your loss, brother. Take some time to attend to your loved ones and get back in it when you are ready. It's only a car, as they say. Life is too short.

Sorry for your loss, when the cause of someone's death is 100% preventable, it's a hard thing for anyone to make sense of.

I've been considering covering my doors and plastic panels like this. Is it just the leather or is there a foam backing under it as well? Its gives it a much nicer quality finish than the steel and plastic faux leather look.

Got to see the car in person with Geoff the other day. I've never seen anything like it.
The interior work is amazing and as you look over the car, you see another detail that's better than the last. Wait till you guys see the rest of the interior shots...the seats look like they're too nice to be put in a Ferrari or Bentley.

I am not sure exactly when I lost my mind along this build process but I believe I must be insane. Somehow I took plans for a basic project and ended up here. Project Creep out of control!

I think I may need a set of these door panels for the Fastback!!! My wife said the door panels look "comfortable" like a leather couch!
