View Full Version : 68 bird stance
Ok Iam a couple steps closer to my stance. Put in 3" rear drop springs and cut 2 coils off my fronts>>>I might have went to far.front end now sits 24 inches from ground to lip of fender with 225/40-18. Also my headers are about 2 inch off the ground..YIKES!! jUST A NOTE THESE ARE NOT MY 18 ' rims I borrowed them from a friend to get an idea of what to do with tire sizes, and they are not the correct back spacing. The rears are 255/45-18 and the fronts are 225/40-18. I think the front tires look to small. So I thought maybe a 225/45-18 would complement the 255/45-18 better and the 225/45-18 would be 1 inch taller. Here are some pics. sorry didnt have the 18s on the rears.
That looks WAY better! A 245/40/18 will fit up front no problem and is almost about the same exact height as the 225/45 which is only about .5" taller than a 225/40 and out back you can fit a 275/40 which is 1" taller overall.
As for the headers, have you looked at mid-length units? They'll get the collector off the ground.
low ground clearance is just the price you pay for that badass f-you stance. just lookout for roadkill.
Yeah for sure >>they be alot of f-me bombs going off as I snag a piece of pavement now and then LOL. Thanks jason Iam still debating on size and ofcourse wheel choice. It will all happen before spring..so I still have time. Here is a picture of a 68 I like this stance!!
hey jason! How low can I go in the rear with the 275/40-18 tire? I wanted to drop another inch on top of the 3 inch already. And How low can I go in the front with 245/40-18. I think Iam 3 inch down in front now. Thanks. Derek

As far as number of inches you can go, that's hard to say from small pics of the outside of the car on the internet. That needs to be determined by you taking a bunch of careful measurements from inside and outside the wheelwells while allowing for approximately 26.75x11 of overall tire dimensions. If you have the right wheel size and offset, you can go plenty low and I would simply suggest if you're going to keep the nose where it's at, make your rockers just a hair above level with a 26.75" tire out back.
Thanks jason. Ill need to start measuring!!

interested in seeing where you end up at. I am lowering the Bird as well, the front is pretty tall stock on 18's. I rolled the inner lip partially.
Did you get any major rubbing at all driving?
I cant drive it with these front wheels. I borrowed them from a friend and the backspacing is only 4.25. I need 4.75 of backspacing. The outside of the tire is to close to fender bolts and I dont want to tear up my buddys tires. I was able to back it up in the drive for pics, but thats it. The cruzin season is over here pretty much in the northeast. Soon winter will be here and so will the long winter. Wont be until april or may before she sees pavement again. :( But now I can work on my stance and wheels and tires
ok I put front and rear tires on to view stance. What do you guys suggest. I lowered the rear 3 inches and dropped the front 3 inches. Fronts -225/40-18, rears 255/45-18. I think it needs to come down another inch in the rear and maybe put 225/45-18 in front which will raise half inch, or put 2 inch drop springs in front. I want to fill the rear wheel well and get the rear tire just level with the lip. Do you think the front is too low? Looks like too much rake to me. I would like about a one inch rake. Sorry for all the questions I really want to nail the stance. Too many variables to deal with. atleast I know I want 18's. Thanks in advance. Derek p.s. Like i said earlier I really want to get this stance. The 3 pic of the camaro. Now that I look at the bird and camaro next to each other, I think the backspacing is throwing me off. I guess ill have to get the right wheels first with the correct backspacing. Like I said earlier, these are not my rims. Geez ya know I guess i am figuring this out as I type. But please still let me know what you think. ok Iam done

Personally I'd keep the rear where it is and raise the front about an inch.
Ill have to agree with u on raising the front one inch. But I would still like to drop the rear one inch. Ill try the front first. Thanks:)

the front looks pretty low to me. I think you will have some major rubbing issues.
Check this out, Rd photochopedd my rig with enough drop for reference (see Boss 338 thread):
I am going with 1.5 drop front, so slightly in the range of the copped pic. for the rear, I may just ad a block drop and adjust pinion and see where it stays.

Yes I agree with being to low in front> What size tires, rims and backspacing do you have? Looks good. Iam still trying to decide on what size 18s I want

I have just under 2" of ground clearance under my headders. I have to be careful. I sit 3 " lower than stock.
