I figured I might as well show off my project! It is a 1988 Monte Carlo SS and I have had it since 2001. I bought it for my 21st birthday! As with all of us and our projects this has been a love/hate relationship with this car. I recentlly bought a harley that I was planning on making a chopper. In July I messed up my back again so the Harley idea is now gone. Now all my attention is back on the monte. Here is a list of current mods:
- 350 bored 060 over (various goodies inside)
- Built 200R-4 trans
- SC&C Stage 2 front end kit
- SC&C front end brace
- Bell Tech Drop Spindles
- Vari Shocks on all four corners
- Moog front springs, Bell Tech rear spring (soon to be CCP)
- Rear frame notch
- 6 Point Roll Bar
- Nascar Boom Tube Exhaust
- Racing Front seats with 5 point harness's
- wheels/tires aren't worth mentioning.....yet. (see wheel/tire section) :yum:
This is mainly a street car but it does see some autocross and road race events. Here are some pics.

That is where the car stays. Parents house with a lift and a full fab shop. The lift is on "my side"..lol.
Thats enough for now. I will get my new wheels in about four weeks. The car is currently on the lift getting a boat load of upgrades. Pics and description will be soon!!
Thanks for checking out my project.

Also, do you mind sharing the part numbers for the Vari-shocks you are running?

I need to look up those part numbers. They were made for my application, with the ride height and suspension mods taken into account.

How much is your Monte lowered overall? Mine has 1" spring 2" spindles front, and 2" OPG springs rear.

Gutting the firewall for a heater delete panel
you did a great job with the ac delete.....my question is what did you use to remove all of the old sealer/silicone off the firewall. wire wheel and scrapper or what it looks good?
as you can see I'm at that point right now and getting ready to pull my old eng/tranny, clean firewall and frame, then por-15.

I used a paint scraper mostly. I just took my time and made sure everything was clean. I had a small wire brush I used too.

That's what I was thinking. My best friends brother is a body guy. He will be spraying my Monte this fall/winter. If I had a shop doing my paint it would be around $8,500. He is doing it for $2,500.

The monte handles alot better than it did with the old suspension parts and wheel/tire combo on it. I can take turns now and feel confident that it will stick!
I have only had the chance to drive it about 100 miles with the new wheels on it before the rear end gave out though. It is on the lift now once again with the rear out. It should be back on the road next week.

I have pics of the frame notch in a thread that I put up about four years ago. Search my name in this section and you will find the thread.
The wheels are CCW Classic's with polished hoops and anodized black centers.

What I like most about this car is the budget look. There is obviously some major cash in the suspension and drivetrain but the spray can flat paint is just cheap and looks down right mean on that car! I really like the second to the last pic of the quarters with rust holes. It makes me think- I dont need a "perfect" car to look bad ass.

I agree . . . I generally do not go for the flat black look, but it flat out works on this car. I think I read in the thread that he plans to paint it, but if it were mine I think I would paint a small stripe (shiny) down the lower body line and leave it at that. The purpose of the shiny stripe to essentially annoy people by saying " it IS done, what about it?" This car just exudes attitude.

The hood is a 4" Harwood fiberglass one. I know alot of people do not like it for the pro-touring look..but I need it for clearance and I kinda like it.

I dig it too bro! Looks Awesome. How you like the KDW's?
The KDW's have been really good! They have good traction and are wearing very well. They might give off a little bit of road noise but it gets lost in the exhaust tone.
Overall they are very good tires in my opinion.

While we were bleeding the brakes...I noticed that the bottom plugs for the bleeders were leaking...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture128-1.jpg
I called Rick at Bear and he said to take the plug out and see if there is a 3/16" ball bearing in there..
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture129-1.jpg
There wasn't a ball bearing in both calipers...not good. The allen plug/screw pushes the ball bearing up into a small oriffice to not allow fluid past it.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture131-2.jpg
Soooooo...Rick said he could either send me one out or I could go on a ball bearing search. I decided to try to find on myself...and I did!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture132-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture133-2.jpg
Ace Hardware had the 3/16" ball bearings. The plug actually had a lil indent that held the ball bearing in place...pretty cool attention to detail there.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture134-1.jpg
Put it on the plug...tighten down and no more leak!! Thanks to Rick @ Baer brakes for the amazing customer service!!!!!!!

Now the never ending drama of the power steering leak. Ever since I got my first Jones Racing p/s pump it has leaked...so annoying!! I sent the first one back and when the new one came in I installed it and it still leaked! I talked to Chris Jones at Jones Racing Products and we found out why....it was all my fault.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture139-1.jpg
Reservoir is off and I now see what Chris was talking about....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture142-1.jpg
This is the o-ring that seals the reservoir to the pump. I was pulling on the reservoir when I was trying to tighten the belt. This was causing the o-ring to get pinched and ripped just slightly...but under high pressure it was leaking. Now I know...DOH!!!!

Thanks goes out to Chris Jones @ Jones Racing Products for puting up with me and steering me towards the light!!!!!

UPDATE:
After RTTS I had a lot of noise in the front brakes when I applied pressure to the pedal. It was a very high pitched squeal. Here is what I found. This will also serve as a "how to" on replacing brake pads on the new Baer T4 calipers.
Here are the brakes...https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture007-1.jpg
Before even starting the job I thought of where the capiler was gonna rest while it was unbolted. The upper A arm is perfect for this, just make sure you cover it so the nice new caliper doesn't get scrathed.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture010-1.jpg
These are the caliper bolts. A 10mm allen socket fits them.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture008-2.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture009-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture011-1.jpg
Caliper is off and resting on the padded upper A arm
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture012-1.jpg
The caliper bolts came with locktite on them from the factory, be sure to use more when installing the calipers again.

Looks like the pistons were digging into the backing material on the pads. This could be a major cause of the squealing. I added some grease to where the pistons contact the pads to help with the problem. **Note: Both sides had this issue.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture002-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture001-1.jpg
I also noticed that the pads and rotors were glazed. I took some emory cloth and sanded off the glaze on the pads. You can notice a difference beween the two pads. The glaze occured because I did not properly bed my pads before I took it out onto the track.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture004-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture003-1.jpg
Here are the glazed rotors.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture006-1.jpg
To de-glaze the rotors I simply scuffed them down with a scotchbrite roloc disk on an air angle grinder. Glaze came off no problem.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture015-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture014-1.jpg
Here is a look at the inside of the T4 caliper. You can see the four pistons very well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture016-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/05/Picture017-1.jpg
When I went to put the pads back into the caliper I greased the slots where the "ears" of the pads go into the caliper. There is a small metal bracket that sits in there that holds the brake pads just like every OEM caliper. I put some grease where the pads hit that metal bracket and there is now more squealing!!

When you say that you used grease here and there what kind did you use? I have some syn Caliper Grease that isn't supposed to melt from heat and migrate to places that you wouldn't want grease.
Also, I used to wrench on School Buses and all the quick start/stops are pretty hard on brakes too. We fought squealing all the time and there is a product for where the piston meets the pad basically called Anti Squeal or Disc Brake Quiet, what I have is orange. I have seen a very similar blue product in a little tear-off tube come in replacement pad boxes too.
It is like a thinner silicone that dampens the high frequency vibration that we hear as a squeal.
Of course, some aggressive race pads are loud, but shouldn't really squeal and glaze but I'm sure you know that.

I guess I must have missed that response. That caught me by surprise to say the least.
I am glad you found a fix. We did have to let Disc Brake Quiet "set up"for awhile as you mentioned; mostly so some material was there to dampen. Otherwise it didn't stay on the mating surfaces where needed after assembly.
That tub of synth grease will last you a loooooooooooong time.

Now I am going to do a lil write up on the install of the GNS Performance Fender Brace kit for a G-Body
Here is the kit all layed out and tools at the ready. All you need is a 7/32 allen wrench and a 9/16 wrench. I did put some anti-seize on the hardware since they are all stainless steel.

First step was to find out where the fender mounting brackets were going to go. These were meant to bolt onto the third fender bolt on a Grand National Fender. A Monte Carlo SS doesn't have this bolt so a hole had to be drilled. I assembled the braces and found where the hole will be placed. After center punching and drilling the hole this was the result.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/PictureDD028-1.jpg
I found some black hardware in my shop and bolted the "L" bracket to the inside of the fender. I used a nylon lock nut.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/PictureDD029-1.jpg
I was curious as to how my Harwood Cowl hood would fit with these fender braces intalled so I checked the hood clearance with some putty. The hood has no clearance issues!!

The passenger side brace installs the same way as the drivers side!! Find the correct position for the fender brace mounting bracket, drill the hole and install it. It's that easy!! GNS Performance does include a direction sheet in the package that explains how much tension each brace needs..

So I am about to install my third brass prop valve from inline tube. Every one I have installed so far has leaked out of the front rubber boot that covers the valve. I called inline tube and they ADMITTED to me that 15/100 of these style prop valves fail and leak from that valve. Doesn't 15/100 seem a little bit high?? And they came right out and admitted it!
Now I know that they do not manufacture these prop valves and apparentlly their supplier is the only company who makes these units.
The one I have is a stock replacement, made of brass and has a 70/30 valving. They do make a solid brass one which has no front valve (leaking part!!) but that is rated at 50/50 valving.
Currently looking for solutions....

Thanks for posting the picts. Now I know what I need to do. Thought about looking into Cuda style mufflers, exit is in the front of the muffler beside the inlet. This has been a great help. Hopefully Josh will release the 84 from paint jail in the next 30 days so assembly can start.

My friend had his MSD box in his glovebox, it gave a sort of whining noise inside the car, is this just his set or is that normal for those MSD ignition boxes?

Wll when i had the frame notch done originally I has 17x8 in front and 17x11 in the rear with 315's on them. I believe I had a centered backspace at 5.5"...and the wheels stuck out like an 1/8". Thats why I sold them...b/c I hated the fact that they stuck out!!!!

Looking good! I installed a similar seat with the same brackets but I had to flip the brackets the other direction to get the right height, lean.
Does the bolt go all the way through on the IO Port upper seat mount? You dont want something that can impale you when you get rear ended. Here is some interesting reading on racing seats and installs that a friend passed along to me to help with mine:
