You are definitely not alone, my garage is full of things I should be doing but haven't because I overthink it. And even after I've done all my research and get my parts together doubt creeps in and I start thinking I should have gone a different route. Anyway, looks like you got everything you need, got to set a goal, mine is to have the olds back together for OC in October and I haven't even gotten my parts yet. Time to kick myself in the ass and get on with it.
This makes me feel better knowing I'm also not alone! I too overthink to the point of second guessing myself, even if it's something I've done before with success.
Front and Rear Suspension is now 100% out of the car....OMG what have I done!!!!!!!!
You've committed yourself, that's what you've done. No turning back now! ;)

Man that Ridetech stuff is nice looking! I'm really happy with everything on my 8.5 rear if you're looking for a good build, should be good for 10 second runs in the 1/4 and lots of corners...

I have a GN 8.5" in my Malibu and used a Detroit Tru-Trac. I LOVE IT! My car is not as serious as yours though! LOL

Nice!
I'm doing the 8.5 as follows: Welding the axle tubes, UMI Performance Roto Joint bushings, Moser 30 spline axles, Tru-Trac, Yukon 3.73 ring and pinion, aluminum diff cover, Baer SS4 brakes....not sure about the yoke though.

I left the 3.42's in mine since I don't have OD yet. Plus with short 245/50/16 tires I'm spinning pretty good on the highway... Still planning on making it to the Syracuse Nationals? I'll have my car there!

Thats pretty much how I built mine, except I wanted c-clip eliminators too so went with THIS (http://www.strangeengineering.net/make-and-model/gm/axle-packages-components/strip-street-oval-track-packages/gm-street-strip-oval-track-axles-elim-kit-1-2-stud-kit.html) and different brakes.
I would definitely upgrade the yoke, I think it was only $75 or $100 to go to a steal 1350 yoke instead of the cast 1330 that was on there stock.
Oh one more thing to think about is the lower control arm mounts should be lowered if your ride hight is more than 2" below stock, UMI has nice weld on brackets for it, that's what I'm using. My build thread (link in my signature) is only a couple of pages and has more details if you're interested.

On the yoke, ok I was wrong on two things; 1. the stock cast unit is a 1310 u-joint not a 1330 so REALLY needs swapped and 2. a steel one is $125 HERE (http://www.jegs.com/i/Inland-Empire/537/PY12/10002/-1?parentProductId=#moreDetails) or a cast one is $65 HERE (http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p76_dana_spicer_3_4_8681_1_pinion_yoke_1350_series _chevy_and_gm_.html) I must have gotten mine on sale or eBay or something...
C-clip eliminators do a couple of things but the only one that really matters since you are looking at rear disks with floating calipers is that it's required on 1/4 tracks if you're faster than 10.99. If you never plan to put at least a 6-point cage in your car you can skip this, since you're limited to 11.49 w/o the cage.
I know way less about 4-link rear suspension calculation than I should but it's generally agreed that the anti-squat goes too low if you don't move the LCA rear mounting locations when you lower the rear. I did everything at once so I can't say for certain it was the relocation brackets but I can say I hooked up MUCH harder afterwards. Someone like Marcus at SC&C could explain the actual specifics. I really do need to get off my ass and learn 4-link calculations... Worst case is you waste $75 and an hour of your time installing the brackets but decide you like the factory location best.
The good news is an 8.5 10-bolt with a decent carrier, 30 splines, welded tubes and a AL girdled cover is good to an easy 800hp so you shouldn't ever need another rear once you're done.

I think the bigger problem with lowering the rear of an OE-triangulated-4-link P-T car and not correcting the LCA inclination is with respect to axle roll steer - I can see that going from something like 8%, maybe 10% in the vehicle understeer sense (which is too much for a car used at autocross as it is) out to somewhere beyond 20%. 0% would define this effect to have neither understeer nor oversteer consequences. Although setting axle steer to be ever so slightly loose (vehicle oversteer, negative percentages here) for autocross might help that activity, it would tend to feel 'nervous' and too demanding on either the street or out on a big track . . . so you'd probably want axle steer to be under 5% and probably closer to 3%, but not any negative value.

Oops, too many tabs open copied the wrong one for the steel yoke...
Still $120 HERE (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ied-py10) for a steel one that fits the 8.5 10 bolt.

Not as far as I am concerned, just the cast vs steel is all I would worry about. I don't think I've heard of anyone busting any steel 1350 yoke at least at the power levels we are talking about.

While there's no doubt 1350 is the way to go if you can, just for reference, the stock G-body yoke is a 3R. Most GM stuff '78ish and later has that as far as I know. I've heard it's around a 1330 in strength.
I have the 30 spline Mosers in mine, great pieces. Moser did send the incorrect axles twice (kept sending 28 spline), so count them as soon as they show up. As a heads up, be cognizant of the LPW cover to sway bar clearance. The nuts aren't counterbored like the TA cover, so you'll need to have the bar level at ride height or it will hit under bump travel. I just went through hell with a DSE bar as a result. Need to get pics up, just been working stupid hours.
I also had two holes in my 8.5" housing that weren't tapped deep enough for the LPW bolts supplied with the cover, they were bottoming out before torquing cover. LPW sent shorter bolts, I ended up putting ARP's in there anyways.

Oh yeah my sway bay was close with the TA cover and doubt the LPW would have fit at all. If it hasn't shipped yet it may be worth swapping covers I was really impressed with the quality of the TA.

Just curious if you ever found a proportioning valve that worked? I assume so since the car has been out and about.
I ran into an issue earlier today with my '87 while loading it onto a trailer where the brakes gave out on me and I got to roll off the trailer without any brakes. Luckily I was able to jamb the pedal as hard as I could and got it to stop before hitting the house.
I have one of those brass proportioning valves and tried tightening all of the lines going to it but still have a leak. It appears to be coming from the plastic pressure switch. Not sure exactly what I should do here if the majority of these valves are defective. :(
Thanks,
SicMonte

Thanks,
After dealing with four leaking aftermarket brass prop valves I bit the bullet and got this Baer adjustable prop valve. It mounts up nicely under the stock master cylinder using a bracket from GNS Performance. A couple lines had to be made and bent but it was sooo worth it. Haven't had an issue since.

Hey Doug, I really think you'll be happier with the results if you work on a way to raise the back of the trans at least an inch or so. You've got the room now, no reason not to do it. Go until the top of the trans where the rubber bumper is is just off the floor.

Lance,
I did think that the trans was too low but the rubber bumpers on top are about a 1/16" away from hitting the trans tunnel. I remember from our conversations that this is where yours was at.
I don't know why it is different but yes I agree that the trans does seem too low. If I raise it then I would need to do more cutting. We shall see.

With those cross-members the only real change in them is the mounting height for the trans mounting bushing correct? I have the 200r4 version and was just going to weld on a tab for the t56 when I got to that point.

No real updates.....life has been getting in the way now. I might have a hernia so that will put me out of commission for a while I think....time will tell.
My next step is to install my Canton oil pan...so I can then install my flywheel and Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. After that the pedal assembly and hydraulics will go in and the trans can be bolted in for the last time.
Then its on to the new rear end....measure for a new drive shaft...install suspension....etc etc etc.

Here's what we did to modify my existing G-Force to work with the T56. I was the designer while my friend John was the lead engineer and machinist. Thanks John...
The T56 transmission mount needed to be about 1 1/4" lower and and inch or so towards the front than the 200R4 mount was, so we cut a C-notch out of the front of the g-Force cross member.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/01/2012112795080843-1.jpg
Then tack welded plates to box the C-notch in and tacked a new mounting plate at the right height inside the notched part.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/2012112795123516-1.jpg
Then took it to the car and test fit to make sure everything was correct before final welding.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/20121127_190838_321-1.jpg
We got the height perfect. I removed the rubber bumper on the top of the T56 and the tail shaft height is now in just about the exact same height as the 200R4 was and I can fit a straight blade screw driver between the rear two cover bolt heads and the floor pan.

Soooo while the rear is out getting built I have started the suspension parts swap.
First step was to assemble my new Ridetech TQ series coilovers.
Here are the springs. Fronts are now 800# (used to be 900# on the single adjustable coilovers) and the rear springs are 275# (up from 250# on my singles).

And here we have a Ridetech TQ Coilover for the front of a G Body...when using the Ridetech lower control arms.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/12/10850174-1.jpg (http://s212.photobucket.com/user/SicMonte/media/Monte%202014/10850174.jpg.html)
The first step in assembling these coilovers is to put on the lower spring mount/adjuster. This is usually done from the bottom of the shock but this is not possible on the TQ series due to the reservoir hose...so the lower spring mount needs to go on from the top. This is a seriously tight fit so the guys at Ridetech gave me a lil trick of the trade.......put a thick washer in the open space on the spring mount to widen the inner diameter and the mount will slide right over the shock body to the threads. BINGO!!!!!!!!!

Next you install the upper spring retainer. Ridetech offers two different retainer...the low and tall...and on a gbody you need to use the tall one due to the factory spring pocket clearance issues.
Here's a pic of the two different upper spring retainers.

Now I did receive some insider tips on these coilovers from two people who have been running these for a couple years now. They actually mounted them upside down in order to have the reservoir hose closer to the trunk to make installing the reservoir easier and to bring the adjustment knob within better reach. I will be taking the coilovers apart soon...switching the Trunnion bar to the opposite side...and re-assembling the coilovers so that this is the way it will be in my car. MAKES SENSE RIGHT??!!

That rearend buildup looks familiar for some reason... Only thing I didn't see mentioned that I would HIGHLY recomend is welding the tubes to 3rd member, I did it myself with a stick welder using nickle rod it was cheap and easy. Also with as low as you are, I would look into the LCA relocation brackets.
Super jealous of those coilovers BTW!!

As soon as you add relo brackets, any need to weld the axle tubes becomes more urgent. I'm not saying don't weld the tubes, more like make sure you do if you install the brackets. FWIW, welding the tubes is probably a job best left to somebody with experience welding castings.

Now let's start an informative debate:
Pros vs Cons of LCA relocation brackets.
I've heard that they are needed and not needed.
SickSpeedMonte
12-10-2014, 02:03 PM
Well, "needed" is kind of relative. We don't "need" to fix the upside-down camber curve to go around turns, but it helps. Relocating the LCA's changes the instant center, which then changes the anti-squat and rear roll center. When you lower the car, the IC drops. When the IC drops, you get less vertical force with longitudinal force (acceleration). Generally, you tune the anti-squat to your tires, but lowering a G-body 3-4 inches in the rear puts the IC too low by any account. LCA relo brackets help some but the UCA's need it too. LCA brackets are better than nothing though.
I noticed an improvement in launch on street tires when I moved the rear LCA mounts down. Getting the LCA's closer to parallel with the ground will help reduce rear axle roll understeer too.
Also, you should know that if the LCA brackets are designed for drag racing (which I believe most are), they will be set up for a rear ride height that is close to stock. With the car lowered, it pushes the rear axle backwards. That hurts weight distribution and just looks funny. So if you install them, mark the rear axle centerline with a plumb bob and position the rear axle there when you mock them up using the LCA. If you have adjustable lowers, then you probably have enough adjustment to not have to worry about clocking the brackets, but you should still measure and position the rear axle when you adjust them.

What he ^ said...
Sickspeed has a better handle on this than me, but I can say it made a noticable difference in acceleleration. Not saying they are the only ones but I know my UMI brackets did not move the axle centerline with non-adjustable lowers.

When I went to the Viking coilovers all around I used Speedtech's coilover conversion brackets which have 3 position settings. I noticed in photos of my car accelerating out of corners and videos from drag racing that my car would noticeably squat with my low stance and the arms in the stock location. I moved the lower arms one notch down and now the car pushes forward rather than squatting. It goes along with what Sick Speed said above, it totally changes the geometry and dynamics of the rear suspension. Ultimately as has been said your arms should be relatively parallel to the ground to put you near optimum. BTW I know you've already got parts, but for those reading along and looking for trailing arms, the Speedtech Articulink upper and lower arms are both adjustable to help with setting pinion angle and centering the axle.

I've been getting a lot of crap recently about my car not being done. Here is the current state of my car: Trans "mocked" up, no suspension, no rear, old oil pan still on.
Tonight I will start the process of pulling out the motor to install the new Canton Road Race oil pan. I have to remove the motor b/c the T56 will not allow me to raise the motor enough to install the pan so the motor is coming out. I hope that this does not lead to more projects b/c I am sick of projects and tired of spending money on this car.
After the oil pan is installed and the motor is back in I will finish up with the T56 install by bolting up my Centerforce® Clutches Dual Friction clutch, installing the Rick Kim Performance T56 and GForce cross-member and the final step is getting the Bernie Duplan SICKSPEED pedal assembly sorted out.
Moving right along to the suspension next. My RideTech TQ coilovers are already assembled. I am currently waiting on my UMI Performance Inc. suspension to be completed. Once that is received I can throw the suspension together and mount up my recently built 8.5" 10 bolt rear. This baby has 30 spline axles, Inland Empire 1350 yoke and a Tru-Trac diff with 3.73 gears. The rear brakes still have not been determined yet. I'm debating on keeping the stock drums (highly unlikely), doing a basic C5 rear disc swap or go all out and get the Baer Brakes SS4 set up (anyone out there at Baer wanna hook me up?).
Once the rear is in and all the suspension is set up I can throw on my CCW Forged Wheels "Classics" and properly measure for an aluminum drive shaft. I also need to get some BFGoodrich Rivals at some point. This will be the last piece of the building puzzle. After that is said and done I will have to drive it a bunch to fine tune everything and then drop it off at a friends shop to have a cross bar added to the "cage" to make is legal to compete in SCCA events. Then it's off to some events to see what else I can break on this car.
So I know this car has been down for a long time and I am just fine with that. It will get done at my own pace and when my back starts to hurts I will stop working until the pain goes away which could take days. I work slow, over think things and obsess about the dumbest smallest things but it will get done and we will see you at the Syracuse Nationals, Cruisin the Smokies, Cruisin Ocean City, some CDC events, some SCCA autox's and hopefully the Polish Mountain Hill Climb again.

I'm using Moser 30 spline axles in my 8.5.
Not sure about the rear discs off an s10...no experiance with those. I know a lot of people use the rear ls1 brakes though.
I am planning on using the Ridetech front Tru-Turn set up and also hope to use the new UMI G Body front suspension set up at some point. I will test both to see what best fits my driving style.

Hey doug, hang in there. It will all come together. Besides, if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. I attached a pic of my monte that has been a labor of pain for the last 18 years of my life. But i wouldnt trade any of it. All the suspension work has been done, with a lot learned form your thread(thank you, seriously), but i have one nagging problem that you seem to have fixed. Your inner fender liners...early on you had cut them, but now it looks like you hAve some stock replacements. You claim they dont rub even with the 275s up front. I have 245s and im hitting on the passenger side where it pinches in for the ac box(thats all gone now) and the battery tray. Whats your secret? Ones for a regal, or cutlass work better?

I am using the stock inner fenders but I cut them across the middle so they flex more. Thats about all I did....no rubbing at all on full lock.

I got the rear end back...all I have to do now is paint it and determine what I will be using for my LCA relocation brackets. I hear UMI is coming out with some trick stuff soon............
The rear is a GM 8.5" 10 bolt with 30 spline Moser Axles, Tru Trac Diff, 3.73 Yukon Gears, Inland Empire 1350 forged yoke, a LPW Ultimate 10 Diff Cover and the UMI Performance Roto Joints. This is a bad mofo.

I'm pretty sure it won't want any friction modifier either, so I suggest doing a thorough cleaning inside the pumpkin and axle tubes.

Hey sicmonte. What size wheels studs do you have in your car? The part number if you remember.
Front wheel studs were already installed when I ordered the brakes from Baer so I have no idea what part number they are.
The rears are ARP #100-7713

and yes for some reason I have different lug nuts for the fronts and the rear.

- Installed new motor
- Installed Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch
- Installed LT1 T56 built by RKT Performance (Rick Kim)
- Installed SickSpeedMonte Clutch pedal assembly
- Installed 8.5 rear end
- Installed full rear UMI suspension
- Installed front RideTech Tru-Turn set up
- Installed front RideTech Muscle Bar
- Installed RideTech TQ Coilovers
Here is a link to the full 11 hour build. The motor and clutch/trans was installed in the first two hours and the motor was fired up in the last half hour of the video. I will have build pics up soon.......

Nice build, any feedback on the UMI Rear coil over mounts?? debating which way to go with my Elcamino, and the Ford 9 inch??
Thanks RW
The UMI rear coilover mounts with lower control arm relocation are just simply amazing!! Well made, well engineered. very beefy, just perfect.

BTW, where or how did you get that ridetech banner?
I get the banners from the companies that support me. I have them bc of this build thread and all the pics, as well as my twitter feed, instagram page, shop facebook page and my youtube channel....I'm a media junkie and they get a lot of exposure.

Man a lot has been going on this summer....I have an update for what's been going on ever since about mid April of 2015. It's going to be very detailed with personal life stuff...car stuff good and bad...and some event stuff. I haven't been feeling well the last month or so and that's why I haven't been on here but I am starting to feel better and I have a lot to put up here!! To be honest I have been on facebook and Instagram a lot more then I have been on here but that's coming to an end. There will lots of pics so stay with me....it will be worth it.

Since I did the SC&C upper control arm bolt upgrade back when I had the Stage 2 plus set up...I can no longer use the stock hardware that comes with most control arms. The bolt upgrade btw is just a larger diameter bolt...but in order to use them you need to drill out the mounting holes on the frame. This is all and well until you decide to switch arms......then you need to do this!! #fail

So back in March 2015 I decided to make the twelve hour trip to Ridetech in Jasper Indiana to participate in the 48 Hour Corvette build. When I got there I was just overwhelmed by the whole deal. I helped out with the social media side of the build and I even helped out on the car a lil bit. This was a great trip and it really inspired me to get my car done!!! Can't thank the entire crew at Ridetech enough for all their hospitality!!!

Doug, I'm new to this site and just wanted to say: this is an absolute beast of a build. I recently purchased a 1985 SS that I (hopefully) will be starting on soon. I've got to finish up the current project(55 Chevrolet pickup ratrod sitting on a G-body frame.. Quite an undertaking.). I hope to end up with something similar to what you've done on my SS. Your car has given me a lot of inspiration and motivation. I'm sure I'll end up asking a lot of questions.
With that being said, Do you have any updates on the car? Pictures of the new suspension in place?

It come pre-bled and installs fairly easy with the SSM clutch pedal assembly. The Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch is a piece of artwork and performs even better than it looks!!!

So I have always wanted a removable steering wheel...so I picked up a Sparco Wheel with a Momo adapter and Sparco Quick Release. Let's just say that the Momo adapter is completely wrong for this application and so is the Sparco Quick Release. I did some looking around and found some people using a hub adapter and quick release from a company called Forever Sharp Steering Wheels. I got their set up and could not be any happier!!!! I highly recommend their products!!

Now with the trans installed and the rear end installed I could finally measure for a drive-shaft! I chose to go with a DynoTech 3.5" 6061 Aluminum unit with 1350 ends. This was almost too pretty to install under the car!!!
Here's the T56 trans installed with the GForce T56 crossmemeber for gbody cars.

Fantastic- I have a question with my 78 monte I'm building re: driveshaft selection. I'm putting in a strange engineering axle, was going to have them build the driveshaft once I get trans in and measured. What's the thing to know on selection from carrier? Anyone heads and tails better than others? Why? Thanks. Love this build,

I went with DynoTech b/c a lot of the people that autox and participate in the event run these driveshafts....so that's why I went with them. I got the 1350 yokes and the nice aluminum shaft for strength.

May I ask, is this reservoir the same size as the plastic one?
Now the never ending drama of the power steering leak. Ever since I got my first Jones Racing p/s pump it has leaked...so annoying!! I sent the first one back and when the new one came in I installed it and it still leaked! I talked to Chris Jones at Jones Racing Products and we found out why....it was all my fault.
Back side of the pump and reservoir.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture137-1.jpg
Spring clips on top and bottom that hold on the reservoir.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture138-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture139-1.jpg
Reservoir is off and I now see what Chris was talking about....
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture142-1.jpg
This is the o-ring that seals the reservoir to the pump. I was pulling on the reservoir when I was trying to tighten the belt. This was causing the o-ring to get pinched and ripped just slightly...but under high pressure it was leaking. Now I know...DOH!!!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/Picture143-2.jpg
Thanks goes out to Chris Jones @ Jones Racing Products for puting up with me and steering me towards the light!!!!!

Not sure what plastic one you are talking about. I do know that Turn One Steering uses a plastic reservoir in their PS set ups. I am not sure of a size difference though.

Wouldn't mind seeing the more significant updates here.
Let's just say there's a reason I've never had a facebook presence and leave it at that.

I see the updates on FB. The general consensus on here is that if it's not a several hundred thousand dollar first gen Camaro build, it doesn't get much attention. I quit updating my build on here, wasn't worth the effort :(

... complete with their new EFI gas tank ...
That part must have made the whole EFI conversion way easier/nicer/cleaner than stuffing the EFI pump plus a low pressure pump, a homemade transfer tank and a filter upstream of that . . . all into the spare tire well, and finding a place to plumb the return line to other than back into the transfer tank (think in terms of excessive fuel heating).

I'm intrigued by the "Sic10" I would like to see this.
I don't follow any builds on FB, I don't think. I'm really trying to get away from FB. I really only use it for industry groups, so I'd like to see updates on here.
I know the feeling about nobody following builds on here. I've got my S10 build on 4 different forums, and I think S10forums is the only one that gets any significant traffic.
I posted a link on a couple of forums, to the S10forum post for anyone who *wants* to follow it, in case I don't update it as often as I do there.
