I'm sure your surprised but I vote 8.5, these are great rears and with just a little upgrading can handle a TON of power. Just going to aftermarket 30 splines and a trutrac is good for any amount of HP in road racing, hell it's good for 10's with slicks at the track... Weld the tubes and add the billet cover and you can go 9's, just look at the GN's doing it.

All you're gaining with the 9" is more weight and less efficiency for more $$. The only reason you don't see a ton of 8.5's out there is it's just a really uncommon axle.

My $.02

My $.02 X2 I agree!

We have MANY customers with Turbocharged GN's deep into the 10's and into the 9's with a Sh*t load of torque running a built 8.5 rear end. Doug just doing what your planning on will handle 700 rwhp easily at the drag strip leaving off a trans brake but I don't think that's your plan so I think your 8.5 set up will handle even more hp on a auto-X. Save weight, save money and go with the 8.5 Hell I am pushing 500 hp with my turbocharged T-Type with a Stock 8.5, stock axles, stock posi chunk and still holding up fine after 5 years and a lot of 20 lbs boost beatings on the Auto-X & Dragstrip.... I am not changing anything until it breaks and once it does I will be doing Exactly what you planed on without a single worry!

I'm definitely not an expert on rearends (no jabs needed), but I would vote 8.5 for the same reasons. We had planned to run one in Sam's 67 that we're building but found a 12 bolt first. My second choice would be a 12 bolt before a nine inch. We have been running a 12 bolt in our 66 for three years with Moser C-clip axles, Eaton posi and Richmond gear with absolutely no issues. We taking it out right now to replace the axle bearings just for good measure and to add a -8 AN bung for a better vent.
Just my humble opinion...

How much work does the 8.5 need before you can run it? Can you just throw it in and focus on getting a proper transmission in that car?

Perhaps don't overlook the Ford 8.8" axle. It's what the 2013 GT500 drives through in slightly strengthened form, at 650-ish HP and 600-ish torque.

Obviously it's still in active production.

There is or at least was an effort to adapt the 8.8 to the Malibu/MCSS chassis discussed a while back over at maliburacing.

The 8.5 is just a stock one that was sitting outside for a good while so it is pretty much just a rusty housing.

Plans are to bring it into the shop...dissassemble...clean...weld tubes...weld on the big ford axle ends...have someone build it with the 30 spline axles and tru-trac...3.73 gears...and a 1350 yolk (is 1350 right?)...then install the Baer SS4 brakes.

Yeah, that rearend statement was a slow pitch!

The small plastic vent on the stock 12 bolt housing doesn't seem to work too well during extreme use so we plan to tap and plug it and then weld in this bung on the top of the axle tube and run it up to a vent mounted higher. I didn't come up with this on my own, I have seen a bunch of guys that do what we do doing the same.

Thanks for the pic Tom!!!

The car hasn't been touched in quite a while. I recently re injured my back so I have been focusing on getting that back to normal so I can even drive the car!!! All this down time has really made me think of some simple thing I need to take car of on the car.

1) Move the battery to the trunk
2) I need a diagonal bar behind the drivers seat per SCCA regulations for the hill climb.
3) I think I need a new dimmer switch b/c my high beams work and my low beams don't. This blew when my newly built alternator was pulsing between 8 volt to 18 volts.
4) I think I also have a connection with a buddy of mine to get the car painted! It will still be satin black don't you worry but it will be actually painted instead of rattle canned. I'm afraid it might loose some of its appeal though...
5) Use the really nice glove box ignition box mount I got from GNS Performance.
6) Gauges...but those are expensive so probably won't happen any time soon.
7) Move my trans cooler to the spot where Scot and Dan have thiers...I like that spot WAY better! Thanks guys!!!
8) Last but not least...possibly pull the motor and freshen it up with new bearings and rings. I was talking to Bob Johnson on FB and he really made me think about running the motor the way it is and crashing it when the motor blows and oils down the track. When the motor is out I would install a Canton RR oil pan as well.

Any of you got ideas?

Let your back heal. I have way to much experience in my family with back issues. Time is your best friend and don"t over do it because "today" it feels OK.

It's funny how the little things get pushed aside. I had a list of 11 cleanup areas, mostly wiring, on the Monte the would take just a little time, 2.5 weeks later they where done.

Spring is coming, hope to see you at another event soon.

oh yeah TRUST ME...I am taking it easy even when it does feel better. I am well versed in back pain...

I had back surgury (laminectomy) when I was 19 to correct my L5S1 disc that totally blew out and that started the whole pain issue. When they were in there they found out that I had congenital spinal stenosis. That basically means that my lumbar spinal column is tapered instead of a constant diameter...therefore pinching and crowding nerves whenever there is any amount of inflamation. This causes pain literally in my a s s and down my leg. Any kind of movement is not fun when it flames up and I even have to walk with a cane. Kinda sad.

Things were good from 1999 (date of surgury) until about 2007. That's when the pain started to come back. Since then I had had 9 epidural steroid shots, Physical Therapy almost every week, and have had to stop doing things that I love doing b/c they are too much impact on my body. I used to be awesome at snowboarding..no more of that. No more boat rides on the bay with my buddy's...etc. It's weird that racing my car doesn't affect me at all! I guess it is the fact that I am strapped in the seat so tight that I don't move around. Good thing I guess.

Yes spring is approaching fast. With all the events being so far away I am afraid that I will only be able to compete at RTTH. Last year Kim and I really went all out and hit every event we could and while it was an absolute blast...it killed me money wise and car wear wise. After blowing the trans and possibly the motor...I need to pick and choose events wiesly! I will still do a bunch of local events though and will never miss that hill climb again, but I just can't justify the expense to travel 8+ hours,or even farther, for an event. The only exeptions there are RTTH which I will never miss, and the OUSCI if for some un Godly reason I get invited, but im fairly certain that I don't have to worry about that! lol

So I need to get a few loose ends tied up for this upcoming CDC/SCCA/ASCS season. This is the first one....

My Bear Prop Valve is leaking at the highlighted connection. I took it to Facebook and was contacted by Gabi Baer with in about two minutes...then on the phone with Bear in about another two minutes. When I called Rick picked up the phone and new exactly who I was and what my issue was. He even said "are you Doug with the red arrow in the picture". Now that is customer service!! Got the info that I needed (pipe thread = teflon tape) and all is well over here!!

Well today was a good day....a great day!!!

I had my last doctors visit today concerning my back and it turns out that I am no longer a candidate for back surgery!! The pain and symptoms could come back at any time but the surgery needed is just too major at this time that we are going to try to mamage my current situation. Good news in my book. So I need to get my life and body back in shape. And once that happends about mid summer...I should be ready to get back into my Monte.....

I have my sights set on RTTH.....watch out.

Sorry that it took so long to reply to this post!!!!!

The set up I have now is a mix of March and Jones Racing. The alt, water pump and crank are from March and the complete Power Steering set up is from Jones Racing. I called up Chris at Jones Racing and told him what I had, and he got me set up with that really nice P/S set up. I went for that power steering set up b/c I had two stock pumps and two aftermarket pump leak on me. I was fed up and spent the money for the good stuff that I wanted and have no regrets what so ever. Anything from Jones Racing is money well spent. If I was ever going to build a new motor...it would have a complete Jones Racing set up on it.

So if you all remember, last year at this time I broke my trans up at Run To The Shore. IUt turned out that the front pump sheared off and sent metal fragments all through the trans and it was just a horrible sight.

So I had the mother of all 200r4's built, one that could take the heat and abuse of a day at the autox, a track day at Mid Ohio with Danny Pop as your instructor, a SCCA Hill Climb event in 98 degree weather, and even a serious thrashing at an American Streetcar Series event. This bad boy trans had the works. It had a billet front drum and input shaft, hardened sun gears, billet servo, billet output shaft, "blue" bands, heavy duty clutch packs, Pro Torque Converter, even had -6 braided lines going to a huge Derale cooler with a fan on it, and a semi deep PML aluminum pan with cooling fins on it (thanks Tom!!!). After every event I had the trans fluid flushed with GM Dex VI fluid (perk of having a shop). The trans did great all summer and fall........that is until this weekend.

This weekend I planned to drive the car to the bi annual Cruising Ocean City MD weekend. I do this weekend twice a year and it is hot rod heaven! Car was running great until I had to stop to pay a toll at the bridge. When I accelerated from the stop it sounded and felt like I was running over a set of rumble strips. I didnt feel it again until about 45 minutes later when I was in a town and hit some stop lights. At each light the same thing happened when I left from the light. Then at the fourth or fifth light I noticed that the car wouldn't move forward when I let off the brake. I gave it gas and it wouldn't shift at all and had maybe 1% power. I was taching out the motor to just get it off the road and into a gas station. It has reverse but nothing in the forward gears.

So naturally I called the trans builder and was like....ummmmmmmm. Of course he says its the torque converter. So I called the converter company and they say that its definitely the trans. Oh man here we go. I called back the trans guy and he said that he would look it over to see whats going on for free.

So my plan is to pull the trans out and send it to him. In the mean time I am going to just bite the bullet and do a T56 swap. This will most likely stay on the SBC since I am on a pretty tight budget. We shall see....

Assuming you have seen people do the $50 paint job, http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html , and you would paint your car again would you do it with the rattle can like you did or do the bit of extra work and try this method? As far as im concerned i have more important things to pay for at the moment besides a fancy and pricy paint job.

That way looks nice but man does it take a long time do do!! 8-10 coats with complete sanding in between? Good lord....

I know that my spray paint job isnt the best...but its good enough for me! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I has lasted 6 years so far!

Thanks for the feedback. I was just trying to figure if all the extra work was worth it, money wise it comes out to about the same give or take a few bucks so it just came down to a time thing, and if you say yours still looks decent after 6 years ill prolly go the route you did except ill try a silver and see how it turns out.

Rattle cans will likely run you more than $50 not counting the primer you'll want to use so everything comes out the same shade. And there certainly will be some sanding.

But if you're patient you can get race car good or maybe even daily-driver good results.

I know I went through more than 20 cans when I painted all of the Malibu I used to have. Best I can remember, that was in 1999

Never garaged, washed only occasionally/sporadically, touched up a couple of times on the trunk lid and lower quarters only.

Years before that, I rattle-canned a 1964 Dodge in a metalflake blue. Don't know if any prints or slides of it have survived this long.

IIRC John B over on montecarloss.com had 17x9's with that size, but that's been a while and I don't know what offset he was running or how much room he still had. The wheel well shape appears to be slightly different from the Malibu's.

Well the trans is out and now at the trans shopping....waiting to find out what happened to it. This is a turning point in this car b/c if the diagnosis is minor and the builder will fix it for free then the 200r4 is going back in...but if there is some sort of major issue that isn't covered by the builder then the 200r4 isn't getting fixed and the car will sit until I get a T56. I am just tired of messing around with this car.

Trans lines are down...and draining.

After the fourth brass prop valve decided to leak I got fed up and just went with the Baer adjustable prop valve. You can see it here in the photo mounted with the GNS Performance bracket. Under the car where the brass prop valve was is now just some junction tee's in the hard lines.

This set up is amazing!!!!

Got some news from the trans guy......bad news.

Apparently the trans was built correctly and I installed it correctly...the thing that caused the trans to fail was a "hard part failure". It turns out that the most expensive "Be ALL End ALL" part of the trans was manufactured wrong, therefore causing the failure.

My "E4340 Steel Billet Shaft Forward Drum" was manufactured off center, meaning that the billet input shaft was welded onto the forward drum off center. This caused the copper bushings to wear out at a ridiculous pace...therefore taking out the ring lands...therefore taking out the whole center support...therefore destroying my entire trans. The "glitter" in my fluid was from the copper bushing being ate up by the misaligned input shaft.

Here's what failed. **these pics was taken off the part manufactures home page**

Got this LT1 T56 from Jason Huber at GForce Design Concepts. The condition of the internals are unknown so it will be going to my buddy Rick over at RKT56.com later this week. There we will take it all apart and inspect it. If everything goes well this bad boy will be in the car in no time!!

I have a question for you Doug. Im getting ready to do a cheap paint job on my cutlass.

If you put that much effort into it you could paint your car with a dish sponge and house paint and have it turn out that nice. I did mine almost a year ago with 7 cans of Rustoleum semi gloss black, which yielded 2 coats. It was a super quick and ugly job, but I simply wanted to cover bare spots and body work with something that wasn't porous like primer. The only prep I did was quickly sand the old paint with 320 grit on a da, wash it, tack cloth (which was a waste since I sprayed it half in the garage, half in the driveway) and then spray. Except for some paint chips here and there (largely due to really inadequate prep in those areas), it looks fine. For kicks I recently did a quick buff with some old cleaner/wax laying around and it made it a bit more shiny. My investment was about $35 in paint plus some sandpaper. Page 25 of my build thread shows how I did it and some thoughts about the results. Sorry for the thread hijack Doug. :)

Here's a couple fun facts:

1) Trans came with a clutch and flywheel that a certain company has offered to inspect, service/rebuild and balance for me.

2) Going with a G Force crossmember...simple easy bolt in.

3) Going with Finch shifter boot.

4) any ideas on what shifter I should use? This one has nothing for a shifter....

5) I need to change my speedo...still looking into options for that.

Doug, you are fine with the F-body master hydraulics in your pictures, as long as it's still sealed up. If it's broke open, go ahead and spend the $90 to get a new fresh master cylinder. I'd get a pedal from Bernie (SickSpeedMonte) as soon as you can if I were you, not sure how many he has left. If you'd rather go the John B pedal route, I have one of those that I'd sell you. Either one is good, Bernie's is just easier to push in the further the pedal travels (makes it nice in traffic).

Once I get the trans in the car and everything settled...then I will seasrch for a shifter.

Remember that I have fixed back Kirkey Road Race seats...so I am pretty planted in the car. The shifter is going to have to be pretty spot on for me in those seats.

I have been looking at the Bowler shifters and the White Lightening ones from American Power Train.

Of course all this depends on next week and the verdict if this trans is any good....

If the master cylinder, reservoir, and slave cylinder are all still connected by hydraulic line and sealed up, you are probably good to go with it. Don't break it open...for any reason. They are basically impossible to bleed, if there is any trouble with it...just pick up a complete new set.

http://cart.grcperformance.com/oscommerce/product_info.php?cPath=51&products_id=69

I'm a firm believer in buying the right too for the job once, and never thinking about it again, this fits that bill perfectly.

Your T56 has a Vehicle Speed Sensor in it. You need a way to read that sensor for several issues depending on your setup. That is why I went with the Dakota Digital dash for s Speedometer. It reads the VSS signal for the speedometer, and sends it back out through the module which in my car I use for the reverse lockout as well as the VSS signal to my ECM that I'm still running.

The plus also...is it gives you a great set of other gauges to use as well...all in one nice decently priced package.

Another tool to do a job that you buy once and forget about.

I had a mechanical speedo conversion done on my tailhousing. I did not want to run an electric speedo.
I used factory pedals, LT1 style hydraulics (GM# 12559912) with the Speedtech's pedal adapter and firewall mount.

I ditched the factory aluminum bellhousing and used a McLeod Scattershield (Sum# MCL-8760-00)
I also used McLeod on evrything else.
Flywheel (Sum# MCL-8760-00)
Clutch kit (Sum# MCL-75216)
Roller Pilot (Sum# MCL-8605)

Hurst Shifter (Sum# HUU-3915061) I had to get a white shifter ball for it...could not get used to the black one.

I also had to have my trans built, as it was bad to start with.

Works great now.

No, it doesn't affect the trans either way...but you'll need a VSS signal for the lockout solenoid linked above to work.

You can get it from the VSS signal to your autometer gauge as well I suppose, not sure what they use for a module to run it?

The clutch, pressure plate and flywheel are all going to be serviced, inspected, and balanced by a very very very good clutch company. I will sing their praises once I actually send the parts out! Hint: They are the CENTER of attention in the clutch world and are a FORCE to be reckoned with.

Pedal you can use bernie's , john b, or GSI's pedal. Hydraulics fbody works just fine no need to get anything else. Shifter pro-5.0 hands down. Used them in 3 of my swaps. Careful with the g-force sometimes they don't work to well with the tranny mount, take some grinding. Other than that you got it covered

Doug, what cross member do you use with your 200R4? We modified my G-Force 200R4 cross member and made it work for the T56.

Here's what we did to modify my existing G-Force to work with the T56. I was the designer while John (Jynxd1) was the lead engineer and machinist. Thanks John...

The T56 transmission mount needed to be about 1 1/4" lower and and inch or so towards the front than the 200R4 mount was, so we cut a C-notch out of the front of the g-Force cross member.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/01/2012112795080843-1.jpg

Then tack welded plates to box the C-notch in and tacked a new mounting plate at the right height inside the notched part.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/2012112795123303-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/2012112795123516-1.jpg

Then took it to the car and test fit to make sure everything was correct before final welding.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/20121127_190852_735-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/20121127_190909_473-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/20121127_190838_321-1.jpg

We got the height perfect. I removed the rubber bumper on the top of the T56 and the tail shaft height is now in just about the exact same height as the 200R4 was and I can fit a straight blade screw driver between the rear two cover bolt heads and the floor pan.

I would guess that is a stock 1-pc rear main flywheel. As long as the block is a 1-pc it should be ok. My block is a 2-pc and I had to get a conversion flywheel for the LT1-style clutch.

Then tack welded plates to box the C-notch in and tacked a new mounting plate at the right height inside the notched part.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/2012112795123516-1.jpg

Then took it to the car and test fit to make sure everything was correct before final welding.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/20121127_190838_321-1.jpg

We got the height perfect. I removed the rubber bumper on the top of the T56 and the tail shaft height is now in just about the exact same height as the 200R4 was and I can fit a straight blade screw driver between the rear two cover bolt heads and the floor pan.

I've heard the G-Force cross member doesn't get the tail shaft nearly as high as we did with the mods to mine, be prepared for that. I didn't take any pics of the tunnel that I recall.

I just lifted the trans up into place minus the shifter, marked the four corners of the shifter housing on the bottom of the tunnel, lowered the trans out of the way and cut out between the holes. I had to walk around the car a few times first before firing off the cut off saw..."should I do it..should I do it..." then I went after it, no looking back now. ;)

Once you get the shifter housing going up into the floor, you'll see where the tunnel needs massaged on the driver's side...where the lock out solenoid hits the floor. An area maybe 3" long by 1.5" wide needs moved out about a half inch or so. Five minutes with a hammer and a 2x4 and call it good. Couple shots of Chassis black makes it all looks good again.

Good Luck tonight.

This is the "weak" version of 2nd gear. See how the middle set of teeth are not full length down to the main gears? This is a major cause of failure in these types of transmissions. The upgraded version of 2nd gear have these teeth/gears full length onto the main gear.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/07/2027-1.jpg (http://s212.photobucket.com/user/SicMonte/media/MonteSpringSummer2013/2027.jpg.html)

So this is what the trans needs to be able to hold the power of the motor and to be reliable and functional in an autox or a road course.

Basic Upgrade Package: Includes billet keys, bronze pads and steel shifter gear forks.

Needs a new 2nd and reverse gear.

Needs a 1-2 and 5-6 Synchro.

Needs a new counter shaft.

For the price of these upgrades, the trans and every part I need for this swap to work....for about another $1000 I can get a T56 Magnum kit from American Powertrain which is pretty much a bolt in swap kit.

What do you all think??

carguykeith
07-24-2013, 12:38 AM
If it were me I would go T56 Magnum, you WILL add more power in the future. After looking at all of my options when I considered going 6-speed the Magnum was a pretty easy decision once everything was added up.

T56 Magnum all the way. Strong and precise. Plus it will be there when you get ready to do your ls swap. I plan on getting one from American Powertrain also.

Norm Peterson

Seems like a relatively small step to go new.

Plus you'd have the choice of close or wide ratio gearing. Take a little time with this to determine which will best fit your use. Keep in mind that you'll want to have at least 65 mph available in 2nd gear for autocross (having to shift back and forth between 2nd and 3rd kind of sucks when you're that busy). You'll also have to consider axle gearing here, but if that isn't quite right pick the transmission first and choose axle gears to dial it in to your driving needs. If you do the speeds in gears math with the online calculators, either reduce those speeds at rpm by 3% or increase the revs at those speeds by 3%. It might be enough to make a difference in your choice. Let me know if I can help here.

Heck, you know what you have there, and are halfway into it already. I'd just build that one the way you want it assuming the seller understand what you have found and adjusts his price accordingly. Trans itself is worth what, about $500 in that condition? Maybe less?

The majority of that trans won't work with an LS block if you ever go that route anyway, right? So I wouldn't spend big money to get a permanent fix for a trans if you think you'll be upgrading to an LS down the road.

Just rebuild the SBC T56 trans - get the car on the road.

The LT1 stuff is high.

I have 1600 between the motor and trans.
Fylwheel - 460, Scattershield - 445, Clutch - 715

I have 2600 in my trans (Keep in mind, The Magnum was not available when i did this swap)
800 to buy it, then had it built for 1600 - Hurst shifter 200

I have in 1208 incidentals
Speedtech mount kit - 655, LT1 Hydraulics 153, driveshaft 400

That is 5408.
Holy Crap, Where is the Tylenol.....

This is a costly game to play!!

Ok......I didn't want to throw prices out there but I want all of your opinions so here it is.

The Magnum Trans itself is $2850. The complete kit from American Powertrain was quoted at $5350 and that includes everything from them to bolt it in and drive away...everything.

The pic below is a simple list I came up with for the rebuild LT1 T56 I currently have all apart.

**Don't forget that it cost me $130 in beer to have it torn down and inspected by a reputable trans guy...and it will be another $130 in beer to have it put back together if I decide not to get it. The tear down was worth the $130 b/c I learned alot about these trans's during the tear down.**

For my g-body cutlass I paid $1200 for a lt1 t56 with 40k miles. I ended up selling it when i talked to the tremec guys about what it would cost to build one to hold 500-600hp,plus what i needed for parts to run on an older 2 piece oil pan block. They told me that if I planned on running an LS down the road that for the money I would be better off waiting on the t56 till i have the LS motor in as its pretty pricey to swap a standard SBC t56 to a LS t56. Now if you know its going to be years before you make the LS jump then i say go for the SBC t56 you have an enjoy the hell out of it.

If you can get that tranny rebuilt to hold the power you plan on making and save $700-$1000 Id say go for it, but if you see yourself down the road throwing on a turbo on or something of the sort I would swing that massive bag of dollars that it cost to buy a magnum and go that route. With the American kit being a bolt in thats a nice plus, but you have the skills and knowledge to get the parts you need to save a few $$$, just depends how much hassle you feel like dealing with. With the sbc to ls swap it had something to do with the shaft that the clutch sits on being a 1/4" too short or something of that nature as to why the swap cost alot because it involves a tear down to replace a few parts, but you wont have to worry about that.

Another somewhat common weak link in these types of Transmissions is the second gear. The bottom row of teeth are not full lenght to the base and they tend to sheer off under and sort of serious load.

Sparkles is my nick name from my SCCA buddies......long story that involves a blown motor in my Spec RX7...an after race party at an adult club...and waking up the next day at the track covered in glitter. That's all I have to say about that....

Those two magnets come in the T56...to pick up any metal shavings etc.

I got my T56 Magnum for less than they told you. They don't have a crossmember, you still have to make one. I maybe have another $1000 in other parts after the transmission.

sooooooo...it's been quite a while since my last update. This winter has proven to be very uneventful for my Monte. It has been pretty much in storage all winter. I have had a lot of other cars in the shop and when I am not in the shop or at work I am usually out in the Goose blind. That will all end soon I hope as I have to get that T56 and new suspension installed to get ready for the upcoming season!!!

Here is a view of my car this winter.....

Hello? Hello?....anyone still in here?

It's been a while since I have done anything to my car. That last thing I was doing was getting everything together for this trans swap...and that is still on going. More on that later.

The other day while I was under my car I noticed that my front lower control arms didn't look right on both sides. The coilover was bending the lower shock mount and it looked like the ball joint "plate" wasn't straight anymore, again on both sides. Hmmmmmm......

I found out (the hard way) that SPC makes a spacer for the lower control arms so that this will not happen with the use of coilovers. Wish I knew that when I installed them, oh well.

My big questions is why is that lower ball joint plate bending?? It is much worse on the driver side than the passenger side.

Either or...I will need some new lower arms soon.......................hint, hint..............

My guess is the coilover is bottoming out on hard bumps and the spindle is still pulling up on the ball joint therefore bending the lower ball joint plate...

Regardless, something ain't right in the world...

On to my other issues.....my automatic trans.

Before you all start asking questions about the T56...the swap is still happening I just need to get the 200r-4 shifting correctly before I can sell it.

That being said...ever since this trans was put back into the car from the broken forward drum/input shaft disaster it does not shift down into first when coming to a complete stop. It will take off in second unless I manually put it into first. I spoke with the trans builder and he thinks there is some dirt or debris in the governor that is not allowing it to go into first at a complete stop.

So naturally I got a second and third opinion and was guided to see if the governor has the secondary spring in it. This spring is normally removed in any trans that has a higher line pressure set up. so I decided to take out the governor and what do you know.....the secondary spring is already gone.

**Tech Tip: In a 200r-4 the secondary governor spring is the one that is held in by the plastic retainer. See the pic below.**

Fluid drained and the pan is removed. I also took out the filter for a better picture.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/04/447-1.jpg (http://s212.photobucket.com/user/SicMonte/media/447.jpg.html)

This is where the governor is located. It is in the rear of the trans and is held in by four (4) 13mm bolts.

I'm wondering what the tops of the shock bodys look like. I can't imagine that the bump stop hitting the frame would cause enough of an impact to bend the ball joint plate and the bottom of the spring pocket. Now if the shock bottoms out first, hard and often...that might be enough to bend the parts like that.

And this is suppose to be enjoyable, but moments like this take all the fun out. I'm have no idea what Ridetech makes for the G body but I would see if they have control arms and if so, run there entire package. They would be designed to work together with the coilover and this should work in harmony.

Hope you get the trans figured out so you can get on with the swap.

My only regrets with my SPC upper arms were having to buy another pair b/c my first pair seized up on me!! I had Mark at SC&C install my first set and two years later I went in for an alignment and they were so seized up that they wouldn't budge at all. I had to get a whole new pair and when I installed them myself I used about a whole can of antiseize on them.

Dan,

Ridetech makes an amazing set up in their Tru-Turn kit and I have already talked to them about it. We have worked together in the past plenty of times so I am aware of what they have, the quality and the all around awesomeness of their products.

That being said....UMI Performance has approached me about using my car as a test bed for some products so we are currently in "talks" about a whole new suspension set up while I still keep my Ridetech coilovers. This is the route I am taking and it is just a win win for everyone. More on all that later.....

And yes....This stupid trans is just dragging me down. I think I am just going to swallow my pride and send the whole car to the trans guy and be like....Fix it b/c it hasn't been right since I got it back from you.

I have been running the Currie Johnny Joint rear axle ear bushings for a year now. I absolutely love them. Purchased them from Marcus at SC&C. They compliment the Currectrac billet lower and adjustable uppers I have. This setup makes the rear end movement feel very smooth and predictable.

Harshness seems to be more associated with the LCAs and their bushings than with the UCAs and theirs. They take the brunt of the rearward forces caused by hitting bumps and the far sides of low spots in the road.

I've got the tubular Currie Currectrac LCAs in my Mustang, and as long as there is some lube in the joints the ride quality is noticeably better than stock. Got mine from Marcus, too.

Doug, I am going to take a scientific wild-ass guess that the shocks are too long by about 1".
I am surprised you car isn't bouncy by riding on the bump stops that often.
What spring rate are you running up front 600-700? Or much higher?
The LCA spacer/reinforcement plate would have made the ball joint ends probably bend even more, since they would have taken more of a hit.
I would suggest taking the sway bar end links off, remove the shocks, then measuring the travel up/down from the know ride height, and then compare the travel length to the range your shocks can extend/compress.
I imagine you can lookup the travel length your shocks have.
I would imagine seeng the shock travel being about 1 or 1.x inches more than the suspension has, causing the shock to bottom out, then the bump-stops to engage, and the spindle still traveling (what Lance said) and the LCA taking the beating since it cannot move any more.
New LCA may run the same fate if the shocks are too long.
JMO
And no more jumping the Monte, 'aight?

There is no harshness at all. The axle feels more connected to the car. No wiggle feeling.

Found your thread in my research and saw your MD tag then realized your in woodbine also, what are the odds. Can't believe I've never seen it around before. Great write up, thanks for all the great info.

You're in the Woodbine area too? Where at? You should come check out my shop and I'll take ya for a ride in the car. I'm actually planning a ProTouring BBQ at my house, I'll keep ya posted.

UPDATE:

I finally have my automatic trans issues fixed!!! The most recent issue was that the trans would not shift down to first upon coming to a complete stop. The trans builder had me look at and clean the governor. That was not the issue. After taking the car to his shop they came to the conclusion that the throttle valve was "worn out". So they replaced that part and now everything seems good to go!

Here are pics of the 200-4r throttle valve:

So now that the trans is all fixed...it is time to take out the whole set up and put it up for sale.

And now onto the suspension........

I got a shipment from UMI the other day...full of goodies!

Project SicMonte will now be running a front Ridetech Tru Turn set up and a full rear UMI suspension and sway bars. I will also be running new Ridetech TQ coilovers.

The UMI suspension will be custom satin black powdercoated for my project and a couple other custom upgrades will be announced later. I can't wait to get this stuff on my car...and finally get my car back onto the track!!

My mind is utterly boggled at the thought that a piece of steel with high-quality surface finish sliding in an aluminum bore that's under constant lubrication could somehow "wear out". Did they give you any details?

I truly am honored to have my car in the Ridetech catalog representing g body's!!

I've said it once and I will say it again. I have had a bunch of different suspension components on/in this car. There has been no greater performance gain then from when I put on the Ridetech HQ (Handling Quality, single adjustable) coil overs over two years ago. This year I am installing then Ridetech Tru Turn front suspension system along with their TQ ( Track Quality, triple adjustable) coil overs. I cant even imagine what they are going to do for me!!!! I can't wait.

So to the entire Ridetech crew...thank you for all that you do for me and the hot rodding/protouring community.

Did you get your tru turn control arms yet, was wondering how they looked. I have been trying to decide on either Detroit speed or Ridetech. The Ridetech arms don't look as beefy as the Detroit Speed arms, especially the uppers around the ball joint. Hard to tell just comparing pictures on the web. What cruise spot do you go to?

I have not received my Tru Turn arms yet. As soon as they come in I will take pics and put them up here.

Having dealt with both companies I would go with Ridetech in your situation.

I tend to go to the Burtonsville "Donut Church" on Sunday mornings, Glen Burnie every now and then and to the Mt Airy Jimmy Cone every first and third Saturday night.

Measurements I made some years ago to the UCA and LCA pivot points indicate 19" for the LCAs and 10.96" for the UCAs, but I never measured the lengths of the arms directly. That was for an OE 7.5"/7.625" axle; a different axle converted to use the A/G-body suspension may need to use slightly different lengths if the axle side pickup locations don't match the OE 7.5" axle pivot positions in 3-D space exactly.

This post strikes a chord with me as I am very much the same way. You are not alone. Right now I lack any good advice but I will offer these two points. Nobody else is going to do it, and even if they did no one else is going to do it with the passion and desire that you will.

Perhaps if we made a deal to each take vacation time and go halfsies on a good cattle prod? I'll come stand guard with the prod watching for you to slack off and when you are back on the road you can come do the same for me?

UMI does have good stuff. I've got their adjustable endlinks for the front sta-bar on the Mustang.

A shot of WD-40 (wiping off the excess) every once in a while keeps them moving smoothly, and after about 4 years (4 winters) they're still dead quiet. Seals-it may have something to provide a little protection for the sphericals against the elements for things like LCAs.
