I'm getting ready to order my tires, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with Nittos, but had a question about the size and fit. Does anyone know if a 255/40/17 will fit the front of a 70 chevelle with an 8 inch wide wheel and 4.25 inches of backspace? Thanks for the input.

with about a foot of room. Properly spec'ed they will take a 275/40 on a 9.5" rim.

I'm running 275/40/17 V700 Kumhos on 17x9 wheels(5" backspacing) on the front of my 69 El Camino. Dennis, aren't you running 275's on a 9.5" rim?
Both of our cars are lowered a bunch, too.

Yeah, my crossmember is about 5" off the ground. I was running 275's on 9.5" wheels. I recently changed to a 255/285 combo for added clearence as it is coming down another couple inches. The front would have been fine but the rear needed to step down a few sizes.

I have a 18' also.

I am planning to run 245/40/18 and 275/40/18 or 245/35/18 and 275/35/18 lowered 2 inches in the front one in the rear I may go down 2 or 3
Any advise before I buy the tires would be great.

Mine is down a full 3" from where it sat before with factory replacment Moog springs.

I'm running a 18x8 (4.5 backspace) with 255/40/18 on the front, and 18x9.5 (5.5 backspace) with 295/35/18 on the rear. Only thing I had to do was trim the rear lip some. Otherwise they fit great, no rubbing. I actually have quite a bit of room to grow on the front.
