HID Conversion

I wanted to post the Headlight conversion I used on the Fairlane that Tom stated, "lit up reflectors 3 miles ahead". For the money they were great!! There are only two sights used in this conversion. http://www.buyhidkits.com/h4hilowhidki.html for the hid kit, and http://www.2kracing.com/Universal/Headlight_Conversion for the sealed beam conversion 5 3/4 lamps IPCW. The lamps take our standard h4 conection for our low beams. With the hid setup you will never need high beams. This kit has a build in system that can also project halogen lighting when the high beam switch is activated. If you would like that feature when ordering please choose the bi-xenon kit, which means built in highs. Halogen lighting takes upwards of 55w to operate, while hid operates on 35w continueously. Bulbs stay cooler and emit 300% more light. In order to stay legal please don't get fancy and choose the european diamond cut lenses. Just get the standard 12.99 dollar h4 conversion lamps, along with the hid kit of your choice. The brightest light will be the 4300k kit, but I choose to go with the 6000k for that hint of blue which replecates natural sunlight. Kits are all 57.99 dollars plus shipping. For around 100 bucks it's the great improvement. Remember the higher kelvin the more radical the light changes. From yellow to purple. When ordering choose your connection, I went w/ the h4 type. As a sidenote i didn't need a relay, my stock system can handle to voltage required to power the ballast.

Damn.. I could of had him do this when Penny was there.

Right now the lights suck at night.. an upgrade is on my list and this looks like it might be a good way to go.

I had these PITA lights in my rear view for more than one state on the ride back and I can say they work a little too good. Will be going on my car this winter.

I didn't use a relay kit on the Fairlane but the website says the relay Harnesses are designed to give stability to the HID Kit. It prevents any Flickering or Error lights that occur when you install HID Kits. 4300k nice white, 6000k nice light blue haze(what I picked) and 12000k will give a really vibrant purple. One of the guys on the TorinoCobra.com has had this kit for over 4 years and loves them and had no complaints. And remember, don't touch the bulb...

There is a reason for that. An HID bulb was never meant to be used in a halogen housing. A properly designed HID system will never blind oncoming traffic or people in front of you. Not only are these "plug & play" kits illegal they are also dangerous from all the glare they give off. To properly adapt an HID headlight you need to adapt one from an already equiped vehicle or there are some sealed beam conversions out there. I agree, I hate all the cars on the road with HID kits in normal light housings, they blind everyone even during the day. My DD has factory HID projectors, and they have a nice clean cutoff in the beam. I hope to do an HID swap on my corvair van project at some point, I will be utilizing a factory light from a BMW with significant modifications to fit the stock housings to avoid that pitfall.

But beyond that, I dont think HID aftermarket bulbs are legal in halogen reflectors because they were not engineered for them. The complex shape of modern halogen reflectors is engineered for the halogen bulb. And some reflectors are made for certain markets (US vs European) and where the filament of the bulb is placed.

If you take a halogen reflector and put a HID bulb in the socket the filament may not be in the correct position. Meaning it may be a lil in or out, up or down. And it sounds overly detailed. If there is light then yer good to go.

But thats why they are not legal. Not that that matters much. Heck, if DMV wanted to pick my car apart they would find many things that arent legal.

But it does come down to blinding the other driver. I dont want to and Im sure most folks dont want to.

The halogen reflectors and halogen bulbs are designed to work together. The placement of the filament is very critical. But Im sure a guy could over come this by adjusting his headlights down some to keep the beam off the on coming drivers. But all you are doing is taking the higher output of the HID bulbs and pointing it at the ground. And that still doesnt keep the stray beams of light from the bottom of the reflector from coming up and blinding the other drivers. You will prolly get more usable light from a H-4 (or HB2) bulb in front of a reflector that is designed for that bulb.

NOW!!! HID lights.. Im going with some projectors. LOL I know, WTF!! Big eyed looking things. Dont fit the old car look. Well, Im gonna try to make it happen. I have the projectors. Some acura tl projectors. I like them, I have them on my tl, and no, I didnt swipe them from my car. Got some for a couple bucks used. Gonna use the acura ballasts and phillips bulbs.

Whats nice about the projectors? They are designed to use the HID bulb. And they are bi-xenon. So whats that, bi-xenon? Its a projector that uses a single filament bulb and has a "high" beam and low beam. There is a shutter that limits the full beam for the low beam setting. And the "cut off" of the upper part of the beam is very sharp and distinct. It wont blind any on coming drivers. The bulbous lens on the projectors keeps all the light focused, no stray light beams. Very controlled.

It will be just like driving my acura but the nova is fifty years old. I just have to find the housings now. Something with a clear glass lens and a metal back would be prefect. The reflector doesnt matter, the projectors dont use the reflector. Just another project. JR

This cannot be quoted enough!!! As a matter of fact, I am going to bold it...

You can get very good results using a new H4 housing with good drop in bulbs and relays.

There is a user on the board here that did a PROPER HID conversion into a sealed beam. I will go find the link now and edit my post.

This is more of a question regarding laws...

I'm a bit confused when we start talking about the legalities of things...I only ask, What kind of registration are you running? I know the state I live in if you're running a "Historic" or "Street Rod" plate, you can do a lot to your car that would normally be "Illegal"...hence the reason we have titled and tagged Blown Alki cars here...You guys don't have loopholes?:confused:
