View Full Version : Steering u-joint
Posting this for a friend of mine. Here in Norway we have a model Called Ford Sierra Cosworth. It was produced in mid -80's and start of 90's. It's powered by a 4 banger with turbo. Stock 205-220hp. Modified up to 5-600 hp and some more.
His problem is the coupling between the steering column and rack. The input shaft on the rack has OD 11/16" with 40 spline. The column is no problem. Is there any u-joint with this spline inside the joints ?
The Ford rag joint/ coupling is not possible to get from Ford or any other suppliers...
Thanks!
Olav

Unlikely. The Merkur division was a startup that Ford used to try to sell German Fords in the US to compete with BMW. Cars were sold through Mercury division of Ford, and the whole plot fell apart miserably. Ford abandoned the idea after only 5 years, as Mercury didn't have a clue as how to sell the car. This was after the Capri Mk1 and MkII kept Mercury alive (Mercury was designated to market the Capri) between 1970 and 1977 (when they previously had abandoned the German Fords.) Only a small fraction of Mercury dealers becaume Merkur dealers, and the entire project shut down after 12000 or so Sierras and 2900 Scorpios were imported. Most dealers dumped their parts stock after a couple years, and unsold carss sat on lots for years. Mercury was an old man's car, and the idea of selling a young man's car was beyond the skill of the marketing types.
Best place to look, if I were looking in the US, would be Merkur clubs or Merkur specific parts stores like http://www.merkurmidwest.com/. Another resource in the US may be teamblitz.com, although he specializes in MkI and MkII Capri parts.
