I just talked to John and he was almost speechless. He said by the time he got out of the car to show them how to open the hood she was over $100K and just kept going. Another cool thing is he is at #3 on the highest sales price so far also.

Well deserved for such a great car. We have some planning and work to do next week I believe when he comes by the shop :)

Quick note, we called a limo and went straight to a incredible dinner. yes we are very happy, suprised? Kinda, but by the end of today we knew it would be strong by the interest in the car. I told john just before we went on the block she would break $100K, When it hit $70K i told him it was gone, and sure enogh did another $100K. Amazing feeling! Rates top ten for me lifetime. For John, I am think the same

We got one more to get done tomorrow night.

Lisa and I are heading out to play, I ain't sleepin tonight. John and Lori went drinkin.

Thanks for the support, we both appreciaste all the kind words.

Good luck Frank! Has Empty Nest been getting lots of activity? It's an awesome car.

You can tell there's a lot of interest in the sale of these 2 cars. This thread has over 300 posts. Over 191 posts were logged in 24 hours yesterday on this post thread alone. I wonder if that's a record for us in one day for one thread?

Mike Norris
10-10-2009, 02:47 AM
But I thought Pro-Touring was dead?

I guess we will have to ask Frieburger about that one :bsjerk:

It just goes to show that if you do a car well and hit every little detail that it will pay off for sure. Even the details that usually do not matter will matter when it comes to this money for sure. Plus it helps to have a couple people with $$$$$$ that wants the car also.

Once again a big congrats to John. It was very cool for him and his wife Laurie for sure. As quiet and subtle as John is about talking about the car, the car speaks quite well for itself for sure.

No we will see how Frank & Lisa make out and hopefully we will get similiar results. Ought to be an interesting week back here at home next week :)

potential downside-

First,Congrats to John- that was a beaurtiful car, what I like was the continuity of design and function- no diversion with trendy stuff, just make sure that everyting contributes to the goal.

Potential downside- will this fall off the radar? will this guy bring the car out for us to see? Will he exercise it the way we would like?

I know it's now his, but it would be a shame if this is the last we see of the car. Does anyone know who the winner is?

My thoughts about this:

John certainly accomplished what he set out to do and more with the build and eventual sale of II Much. So absolutely, goal accomplished for him.

The new buyer set a new watermark for all true/real Protouring style cars, so HURRAY for him also. He singlehandedly showed the world Protouring is not dead, but thriving, and that there are buyers out there that recognize quality and willing to pay for it.

As for what he does with it? It is his now, so that is his business. The car has proven it can do what it was designed to do and that is recorded here and other places for the ages. If everyone had thrasted on all the musclecars and not preserved some of them back in the day, there would be none left now for us to see or remember. Personally I hope he drives it and uses it for what it was designed but I would be good with him saving it too. It certainly was a ground breaking car, so having it to review in another 30 years will be ok too.

Yea, but for the extra $94,000 he paid he got to be on TV and got a BUNCH of free drinks..

Seriously though.. he couldn't have that car built for $193,000 so it's not like he overpaid...

Congrats John!!! Okay, I have to admit, I slept through this.....I had to work at 4am this morning so I crashed early. Just reading the last 10 pages of this thread was exciting enough. I'm thinking this will bring Pro-Touring back from the dead so I'm gonna take the $550 79 Camaro out there next year....I think I can get $560 easily! What a week!!!!

I just got back an hour ago (flew red-eye from Vegas).

Thanks very very much for all the support and luck!!! It really helped get through the experience knowing all you guys had my back! This whole Barrett-Jackson experience was a lifetime experience. I'm still not sure how to behave.

Milton (the new owner) is gonna drive it, and it might even show up at the Texas Mile event.

I told you guys I'd let you know what numbers I had in mind before the auction:
"shoot myself" $30K
"live with it" $50K
"pretty decent" $75K
"holy cow, where's the Ferrari dealership?" $125K

There might be a Ferrari in my future, but not any time soon. :)

Thanks again guys!!

Congratulations!!! I can't wait to go to some car show and stand next to a 67 Nova and recall the tail of II Much. Tell the owner how you used to have a 67 Nova that had a road racing chassis, custom suspetion, a 600 HP engine. How it was on the cover of Popular Hotrodding magazine ans then sold for $175k at BJ auction in Vegas. You know, nobody will ever believe you!!! Way to go.

John mentioned this to me (he thought he did).. but I don't think so. The only way would be if it fell under a "capitol gains tax".. meaning he made money on the build.

After all when you sell you're used car do you have to pay tax on it? No, because you didn't make a profit.

John was thinking he might have less in the car in materials and parts but I reminded him of his labor. Even at $25 an hour that's over 100,000 in labor invested.

In other words when you factor materials, parts and labor then John didn't show a profit

B-J definitely knows how to put on a circus, but I had no faith that they could attract the right kiddies for II Much--especially at the Vegas event. As far as I know, none of the bidders knew anything about the car. I spent hours explaining the car to potential bidders. Andrew Borodin forbid me from using engineering jargon... maybe that's the secret! One other thing to note: there were several new cars (Ford and Chrysler) that "copied" II Much's blue. The joke among us afterward is that blue is the new orange. :)

Why?

It's only income if you make money.. also, I don't think this is a "company car".. it's just a personal car.

Tony_SS
10-12-2009, 10:24 AM
AFAIK, If it's built as a company car then you can deduct the expenses but must claim the sale price as income when sold. And taxes would apply to the profit, if there even was any.

But I think there are a few ways that company cars are recorded for tax purposes though.

Capital gains tax [currently 15%] is much cheaper than ordinary income tax [40% at that level]. I have been through this. Several times.
If you claim labor costs, SOMEBODY is going to pay income tax. If you don't claim labor then you pay capital gains tax on the difference between the price of the parts and the selling price...IF you can provide documentation for the parts bills, and IF you have owned the unit for over a year.

Yes...see a GREAT accountant...immediately.

At any rate...great car = great price. Congrats!

I would imagine that since he's owned the Nova for something like seven years it would be easy to show (throught photo documentation) how much labor he's personally put into the car.

With that, the parts, the materials, the transport/fees, and all the other stuff he should be able to cover most, if not all, of what he gets from BJ.

Unless the labor was paid for it will not count towards the basis for the car's cost.

If the labor was not paid for, the receipts (materials, storage, utilities, ect) can be added up and deducted from the sale price. The amount remaining will be a cap gain or a cap loss.
If a cap loss is the case you can only deduct $3,000 per year of the loss off of you ordinary income. Of course you can off set a cap gain with a cap loss dollar for dollar.

How will Uncle Sam find out where the money came from?In my case, I'll be declaring it as income. The F-car's are no doubt stunning, and ultimately better performing. But if I had to decide between the two (boy, that'd be a tough problem to have eh?) I'd opt for the Aston. Easier to live with on a day to day basis and the cost of ownership is less. Especially given that Aston tends to carry over large numbers of parts from car to car thus replacement parts are more plentiful and the economy of scale means that those parts are often less expensive than many of the single model equivalents on the f-cars.

.....but if I had the means I'd sure love to have an f-car someday.....for a few years.

Milton (the new owner) called me today. The car wouldn't start, and they wanted to take it for a ride. I knew they liked to play with the engine control rocker switches in the dash, and a quick review of the correct positions found the problem and got it resolved (they had the XFI in "flash new firmware" mode). The car quickly started after that.

I told Milton I'd write him a II Much User and Maintenance Guide. He thought that would be a good idea, and promised to leave the rocker switches alone. :)

So... I still don't have a plan, really. I told my long-suffering wife that I'd not jump right back into an intensive car build again. I've got kids to get sent into life (two teenagers) and I'll be working those "projects" as first priority.

I am looking for a slightly and gently used Z06 for track day fun, I'm upgrading my shop, and I'm gonna help Mike Norris with his weird, but cool, LSx Bentley project.

Keep all the exterior body panels unmolested and then take a plasma or a sawzall to the floor and remove everything on the inside that is 2008 vette and then weld in a crap load of sheetmetal and square tubing and then some sort of optimized geometry for the suspension.

And some fuzzy dice.

Jeff, I'm liking the idea of the Z06: the widebody and aluminum frame, plus the LS7. Though the price seems good, lol.

Might as well get the King... :1st:

http://www.zr1netregistry.com/ZR1_sale.htm

Competition Yellow with Light Beige Leather. Car is in Immaculate Pristine as New Condition. Car was in a heated garage since New. It had 16,450 in 2002 and only 600 miles were added until 2007. I bought the car from Bob Russo, a corvette collector. I drove it from Point Peasant, NJ and it has been stored since.

Corvette owners know what this 405 hp beast is all about so I will let the pictures do all the talking. I have not seen another Competition Yellow ZR-1 in this nice of shape out there, there will be no disappointments!

The NCRS Top Flight award received Oct. 3. It made a score allowing it to go on and receive the Dave McLellan award. The Engine was signed by Corvette Chief Engineer David R. McLellan. Car comes with all manuals, Original Window Sticker, clean ****** and 2 Hardtops as seen in the pictures.
The original tires are wrapped and in storage. It has new F1 Goodyear's.

1994 Yellow/Saddle 20,840 miles $36,000

Wow, what an opportunity! I used to lust after those ZR1s! That's a fabulous car!

I think the reaction would be similar to the NFL when the owners found out Rush Limbaugh was in the St. Louis group:
"What?? Parsons is going to buy a piece of Corvette history? I know what he'll do to that car. We must stop him!!" And thousands of 'Vette owners would picket my house. :)

Lucky for you that you like yellow Z06's. Those have the lowest resale value, so you should be able to find one at a good price.

I'll be selling my '09 Cyber Gray Z06 most likely. I'm looking at Ford GT's now. Yellow calipers would look right on a gray car too. :)

JP those ZR-1 guys are as mod happy as the C5-C6 guys. I started hanging out there http://www.zr1netregistry.com (where I found the car below) to learn about those motors before I buy one to swap into a pro-t build. Almost all those guys mod their Z's to go from 375hp or 405 hp to 500 hp with a set of very basic mods. Wrong color for you but this Z is one of the desired Lingenfelter 415 cid cars.

I agree the C4 is dated. :)

Alot of the ZR-1/LT-5 guys also have a C6 Vette. Asked to choose if they could only keep one Vette, overwhelmingly they choose the ZR-1.

The #1 reason stated is that they choose hearing that LT-5 at 7500 rpm over the advances you get in the C6 platform.

From 1989-1995 a total of 6939 ZR-1's were built. The last 3 years of production only 448 were built each year.

End of my sales pitch ... lol.

Current Z06 revs to 7100 rpm no problem. That is also 427 cubes revving like that. I've driven older ZR1's and the sound of that engine at 7500 doesn't sound nearly as good as an LS7 at high rpm.

I agree , the C6 Z06 is very hard to beat ( for the money )
You can buy a gently used C6 Z06 for mid-40k to mid-50K numbers.
You can not build a car to perform at that level for the same ride , comfort , and performance.

I'm as impressed by your LS example as you are by LT-5's modded to the same degree.

How much power are stock LS motors making at 8000 rpm?

Update the LT-5 with the same technology as the LS's have now and then you can truly compare apples to apples.

Because you run LS sites that doesn't mean the rest of us must prefer the LS or acknowledge its the greatest motor ever built.

Motors are personal preference ... which is still allowed in this country.

You're the one who started this whole thing because you couldn't stand my stating that guys who own both C4 ZR-1's and C6's saying if they had to choose just one Vette would choose to keep the ZR-1 overwhelmingly.

That's when you started tearing down the LT-5's sound and bragging the LS sounded better.

If JP buys an LT-5 ZR-1 are you going to tell him what a bad choice he made?

Likely he'll buy a Z06 and I wouldn't criticize his choice even privately.

Some bolt-on engine upgrades and it made 540 hp on Mike Norris' chassis dyno. Comes with a custom Featherlite trailer made just for it. Price was right, color was right, power was right!

If I can make a suggestion here JP.

You might want to think about this a little differently. Perhaps from a risk assessment POV.

Now, remember when you were a teenager? Think about the various cars that you and your friends drove. Some had cool cars, some had lame cars. Some had cars that were fast, some had cars that were slow. Some had cars that got good mileage, some had gas-hogs.

Now when "the gang" went somewhere who'd car did they take?

Cool or lame?
Fast or slow?
Efficient or gas hog?

Here is my thinking: You want YOUR kid to be the kid with the lamest, slowest car amongst his/her friends and the car that gets the worst mileage. Why? Because teenagers do stupid stuff. Teenagers in groups do even stupider stuff. Ultimately, anything thing that happens in your kids car can come back to you in terms of liability.

If your kids car gets crap mileage they are likely to be broke and it's harder to get in trouble with no money in your pocket. Thus your kid is more likely to go out with the gang in someone else's car. That's good.

If your kids car is slow and lame the other kids will be less inclined to want to ride with your kid. Thus your kid is more likely to go out with the gang in someone else's car. That's good.

Combine the two and when/if some vehicular silliness does happen it's more likely to happen in someone else's car and it's more likely to be someone else's liability.

Now the hope is, and knowing you a little bit, the likelihood is that your kid will be of sound judgment. The other school of thought is that you'd hope that "the gang" would be with your level headed kid instead of "that kid" and that your kid won't be "that kid". But we all know that kids are kids and even the best ones sometimes have a lapse.

Just something to think about:
