Project BLUEprint.

The name is from my engineering back ground and the amount of engineer and design work that has gone into this car. The car is BLUE and will be my future template if I ever try to sell some stuff I have designed and fabricated for this car.

I thought i would create a project update to keep myself organized and show off the car.

I have done all the work with my dads help in his garage. It was my first car and has been a 9yr project.

current progress:
SBF pushing 375hp reving 6600rpm.
C4 automatic with red alto steals kolene clutches and a reverse manual valvebody and a 6 gear planetary.
custom aluminum dash and steering column.
wilwood front discs.
i designed my own coilover front suspesnion.
9" ford with 4.11 gears.
lowered about 3" fornt and 2.5" in the back.
race seats.
bolt in aluminum radiator core support for quick engine swaps.
16x7.5 wheels with 245 tires on all four corners.
fiberglass front fonders and hood.
the car weighs 2740lbs.

current projects:
three link rear suspension with watts link.
rack and pinion steering.

Cool project.. we just worked with TCI to develop a front and rear suspension for these cars (incluging a rack conversion)..

Cool cars that deserve a little love.

Bryce

thanks steve,

what kinda suspension? MII and a four link?

is the rack a rear steer? I remember hearing that a rear steer setup and achieve better ackerman affects.

Just a FYI. As far as pics go I find its much easier to host your pictures at a place like photobucket for free then add them to your post here. You can keep a gallery of all your pics and can access them from anywhere with internet access should you need to and you can actually get a full size picture for us to see. I would love to see some bigger pics of your car.

Bryce

the rocker panels are even with the ground but the top of the rear fender is 1" lower than the top of the front fender.

well anyways I cut the lower blocks in half so now its 1" higher and the body lines look correct.

Not sure you can go by the fender wheel openings, because the front opening is much larger and taller than the rear.

Bryce
08-25-2009, 11:43 AM
not the openings but the actual body line on the top of the fender and quarter panel.

the top part that flatens out

ah...that's what I get for speed reading.....LOL

Those vintage cars are pretty neat...really anything almost a half centry old rollin' down the highway is neat. Who am I to call it vintage?...it's the same age as me...LOL

Ooh! Lovin' your Falcao! I dig the "NASCAR" look engine bay. Smooth! I dig the suspension and wheels too. At 2700lbs, this should be a blast of a car with 360hp. Geez! Got any incar vid with it revvign to 6600? That'd be cool!

Bryce
08-25-2009, 11:57 AM
i dont yet. What is a good camera for that?

i was thinking about getting one of those flip cameras, they now have them in HiDef for $140. then i could get suspension videos and anything else.

i appreciate the help. Unfortunalty i like to post pics and stuff while i have some breaks at work. and my work comp is blocking all photobucket and sharing sites like that.

so my solution has been to attach some pics and post full size pics in my blog which i can do at work. my sig has the blog site.

Which brand are the glass fenders? How was the fit and finish?

Putting a BBF in mine, so wouldn't hurt to get some other weight off the front of the car.

Sweeeet ride!:firefire::firefire:

thanks Windsor,

I got mine from unlimited products and the hood is crites. The fit is good after you spend 9 hours a fender to make them fit. i still need to fiberglass some studs on there so i can get the correct profile.

again welcome to the site, i saw your other post too. Good luck with your project. and post some pics!

windsor
09-29-2009, 02:39 PM
cool man, thanks for the info. I haven't heard good things about Unlimited Products....maybe that 9-hours is testament to that? Are they supposed to be "bolt on"?

Crites, on the other hand, is supposed to be the Holy Grail of Ford repro fiberglass.

Bryce
09-29-2009, 02:43 PM
i dont think they are bolt on, all holes need to be drilled and mold lines need to be ground off. The crites hood need a little work. But i got if 80% aligned and installed in less than two hours.

does it bolt right on or any mods have to be made?

Bryce
10-05-2009, 11:44 AM
i have to make it fit. no mounting points. i have to make brackets and trim and fit. but it looks awesome. I cant wait to get off work and start working on it tonight.

windsor
10-05-2009, 12:19 PM
well worth the trouble of installation...it truly sets the normal Falcon apart. Good luck with it!

Bryce
10-05-2009, 01:23 PM
absolutely! i will post pics when its done and perfectly fitted.

windsor
10-06-2009, 12:53 PM
funny, it looks like it will fit perfect. Where are the issues, not long enough, etc?

Bryce
10-06-2009, 01:15 PM
the width of my fenders is wider than the valance. and i cant move the fenders in at all. the grill determines the width of the fenders. also i need to tweak it a little while mounting it so the profiles are correct.

Bryce
10-07-2009, 07:51 AM
so new idea to make the valance fit. cut it in the middle and mount both sides individually. fill the center gap with a piece of aluminum 19" wide. the will transition nicely into the radiator and look functional is it would be forcing air into the radiator.

Bryce
10-12-2009, 09:55 AM
windsor,

just for you. I put the front valance on this weekend. i have to split it in the middle. its the only way to line them up with the fenders. Each side is mounted on brackets. I still need to fill the gap in the middle. I will get some pics up here soon. But it looks great.

millerpz
10-12-2009, 12:59 PM
Have you considered cutting and making the splice at the outer end where the valance makes a dog-leg outward (matches a mustang hood)?

This would allow you to do two things, gain width and smooth the contour to fit the falcon.

Peter

Thats a good thought. I already made the cut in the middle. i agree with the thought follow the falcon shape, but it actually looks really good to me with the mustang hood profile. i dont know why???? but it seams to fit with it on the car. eventhough in my mind it seams akward.

here are some updates. i have it mounted to the car now and im driving it. but no pictures yet. i still have more work to do. the gap needs filling and i need to attach it to the fenders. also i bought a new fan, a Zirgo black plastic. it is rated at more CFM and might look a little better.

UPDATE:

I spent more time mounting the front valance. I lined up the sides with the fenders. Also strengthen the gap in the middle where i made the cut. I still need to fill it in with fiberglass and completly reinforce the center. i dont know why i am moving so slow on the project. I guess simutaneoulsy helping my dad put on his carbon fiber hood on his mustang this weekend was slowing me down.

I also had an idea of making the center opening smaller. That way it would match up with the radiator better and provide a more streamlined airflow. just a thought.

I know... I will post some current pics.

sorry for the lack of updates. i was at SEMA two weeks ago then i was sick last week. But i did get my new electric fan mounted. Its an all black Zirgo (3300 cfm) so it looks better and moves more air.

i still have the gap in the center but i will get some pics this week. If I can get off work when its light outside the pics might turn out good.

The pieces are not really off the shelf. The upper ball joint holder was purchased as just the screw in holder and i welded on teh tabs for the clevises. The lower control arm consists of a ball joint holder, welded on tab, 1-1/4" DOM tub welded on at an angle to holder and a welded on gusset between the holder and tube. The coilover mounts on the LCA were purchased and welded also the sway bar mounts are just tabs welded on. The swedged steel tube is off the shelf. I wish i could help with part numbers but most of the items are garage built. The coilovers are 20.5" extended length double adjustable AFCOs.

I lowered the UCA 1.75" and 0.21" back. I kept the stock antidive angle and increased the caster and camber gain with the UCA relocation. I now have -0.66* camber gain per inch of drop.

Ask me any questions you have and i will try to help you set something up.

Nope its not a cover. If you scroll back to the engine pics you can see the aluminum tube that goes across the front. i removed all the steel sheetmetal and replaced it with the aluminum. It is much stiffer and looks a lot better. The other nice thing is that it is a bolt in piece so it makes engine swaps a breeze.

Bryce
11-25-2009, 06:37 AM
I am probably around ten hours in the valance. I work a little slow, that way i ensure its perfect. That would be an expensive front end if a shop did it at $70-100 an hour.

Wow, and what was involved with that? Is it all bolt-in or did you do some welding? Looks very slick either way

Bryce
11-25-2009, 11:04 AM
the tube has a 1.5" x .125" aluminum bar welded to it along its length. I think you can see the welds in the pic. Then the side plates (with my trans cooler on the passenger side and my 6AL box on the driver side) are bolted to the aluminum bar and to the remaining steel of the car. The sides are bolted to the headlight bucket steel and the bottom is bolted to the lower front cross member.

I would go with the Grabber Blue with some satin black accents.

what are your ideas on the accents? I dont think i would paint all the stainless trim.

Obviously I have the black wheels so I like the look of the black accents.

I think if you would do some of the grill & if there is some area in the back by the tail lights.

powdercoat the stainless trim black to match the wheels...a little different. and go satin black hood

Bryce

I like that idea, but still not sure i could do that to a prefect grill and trim. All the window trim is perfect stainless.

I'm going to powdercoat all the chrome trim...no chrome on mine.

I contacted Delta Bay about the apron and they say it's just drill some holes and it will bolt on...is that the case?

Thanks again.

Bryce
12-20-2009, 07:53 AM
100% POSITIVE that it would not just bolt onto my car. It was too high and did not match the fender lines. Also it was too narrow for my car. That is why I split it in the middle. lastly i wanted it mounted as far forward as possible to help with aerodynamics. hey every little helps. HAHA.

i cut off the vertical mounting flange cuz it was ugly.

what color are you going to powder coat your trim.

Thanks for the intel, Bryce. One thing, do you think your fiberglass fenders had anything to do with the bumper not fitting correctly?

I'm going all black on the trim. Unsure of the grill, but the rest will be black.

i dont think my fenders affected the width of the valance. The stone guard had the same alignment with the steel fenders and the fiberglass fenders.

Falcon 65 I am interested in doing a similar front suspension on my 68 mustang with the same control arms... how did you mount the upper control arms all I can find are arms with mounts with 6 inch centers where as the mustangs (and I think falcons) are 5 inches center to center of mount bolts? Did you have something fabbed? thanks

Bryce

I made both control arms.

The bolt spacing on the falcon is 3.75"

So I have been slacking on this project, sorry to the few of you that have been following it. I was busy with the 65 mustang coilover suspension that i designed and fabricated and installed.

Anyway, sort of an update. I ordered the heidts subframe connectors from a sponsor here, Route 66. I got a 10% discount which ended up being a 25% discount off of heidts prices. From all the pics i have seen of SFC for falcons these look the strongest to me. The SFCs look great. good fabrication and welds. I hope they fit well. I have never seen a picture with them installed.

Well i got those a few days ago, trial fit tonight when i get off work. the plan is to fit them then paint them. With those installed i can plan my 3-link upper link chassis mount. It will tie into the SFCs and the frame, this will give the appropriate triangulation. This was the last piece I needed to finish the design.

One step closer, I am excited. I still have some the fiberglass to finish on the mustang valance that I recently finished. I have to install the LED turn signals as well. But after that I will paint all the fiberglass my self. Just take it off and do it right. I recently sold the trim on the trunk for $450. So I will either fill the holes and paint the trunk too or go with a fiberglass trunk lid. I always want to save weight.

Thanks for following my build more updates this weekend. i will take some pictures from the sunday carshow. Dont worry I am going before the chargers play. HAHA.

So this weekend I will finish up the front valance. It needs some fiberglass work and filling and sanding.

then remount drive to car show. Come home take it off and paint it. put in the LED blinkers mount the horn and it will be done.

Then I can start on the SFC next week.

I have considered it. I have also considered bringing the opening in the valance in and up to match the radiator cutout. But then I desided to put a intercooler there. SO i guess my car will get a supercharger at some point HAHA. SO i guess I will wait to do the intercooler then determine what it needs to look perfect.

I would saw fairly complex. I did this 7 years ago when I was 19. I didnt even have a bandsaw yet. The aluminum was cut with a jigsaw and filed/sanded to fit. There are a few tricks to the install that arent seen in pictures. But its completely unboltable (new word, HAHA) so the motor comes out the front for quicker changes, I have a 550-600hp race motor. Its also a lot stiffer with the aluminum tube going across the top. It took awhile to get it perfect. I would guess a few weeks, from memory. But I designed it to be built with the basic tools that I have. The trans cooler is on the passanger side and my MSD 6AL is on the driver side. So that defined the max radiator width.

I like the wheels the look and fit great, but they are heavy. i will probably go 15 or 16s and some cot race tire. like the toyo 888 (245/45/16) or the BFG R1 (235/50/15).

It's really nice ,isn't it!

You can also see another custom radiator support if you look around for my pics. They are a lot easier to do and a lot less expensive than you might think if you look for materials on the cheap in a scrap yard. Companies throw away machines and other equipment all of the time that have more aluminum of all the sizes and types you are looking for and you buy it by the pound. the tools needed to work with aluminum are the same as working with wood and sheetmetal.

I have pics in a bunch of places, around here. What pics would you like to see the most and I will post them. I have more room since Larry gave me the space. I have always had to delete and add until now.

I really do need to update my Angelfire website as it is way out of date. I am now just getting back to the real world after being considered a deadman by my doctors.LOL

You just can't get rid of a man who has a car that needs to be finished first!!!!!

Let me know if you have any special places you want to see and I will post it, I have hundreds if not thousands of pics.

Life is starting to get a lot better now and it is peoples interest that keeps me going the most. Also seeing cars like yours lets me know that there are people out here that think out of the box and simple is the best and that is what we all live for around here .

it's all still in the mock up stages...he had to mount some new quarter panels because the guy I purchased the car from was doing more of the 'gasser' thing with the cut outs (which I think is fugly). Put in the MII front end and doing the mini-tub, cage, all the chassis and body work basically. Not going to have it painted yet #1) to save money for now 2)not exactly sure what scheme I want yet 3) it may be 2 years before I'm ready to start putting it together.

My radiator support isn't even cut out yet so I'll make the opening the same width as the opening in the apron, even though it'll all be black, but I can fit a bigger radiator in there, too.

Again, looks awesome! When you going to start on the rear bumper?

I think it would look better if the radiator was as wide as the cut out in the valance. But it is perfect width for my intercooler, HAHA i guess i will supercharge this motor.

Lights. they match the orientation of the gauges. The low oil ligh tis in the same position as the oil pressure gauge. The altenator light corresponds to the voltmeter. The other two are blinkers and high beams. My switches are hidden in the ashtray.

Should be coming along nicely. Being overseas for a while I'm not on a timeline, so it's not on Tom's front burner, which is fine. As of now, he's going to get it to 'rolling' state with epoxy primer so when I get back I do all the assembly. Yes, I'm an assembler...ha! Either way I know it's in good hands over there. Im painting my subframes connectors tonight with some self etching weld through primer.

I will be bolting them in while I plan the rest of the car around them. My front drive shaft loop and rear third link crossmember will be tying into them. But I will need to take them in and out a few time before I can final weld them to the car. The weld through primer will ensure that the back side of the SFCs will be protected.

You're welcome. I really like the way it has turned out. I am still going to do some reshaping when I go to final paint. I want a little better fit to the fender and I have to decide what to do with the gap between the grill. But all in all it looks really good right now. It was at least 50 hours. Some of that was just staring and pondering. But it was a long process to get it to where I really like it.

I want a little better fit to the fender and I have to decide what to do with the gap between the grill.

I have two ideas.. For the gap between the grill that is.

1. Use mesh and make a whole piece to fill in between the grill and the "bumper" and continue it all the way down (in the middle too)

2. make a "filler panel" that goes between the bumper and the grille and continues all the way across. you could even make a relief to match the radiator cutout in the middle. My duster has a piece like this and it would be relatively simple to make.

I vote #2 for better aero and cleaner look. Just my oppinion though.

I decided on the final wheels for this car. Centerline autodrags as seen in the avatar picture are only 13lbs a wheel and can take the abuse of a street/track car. So I plan on running the toyo R888s with a 235/50/15 tire on a 7" rim. This will be on all four corners. When I get around to the minitub and relocating my 3 link LCAs inboard I will switch to the nitto555R in either a 275 or 325. probably the 275 on an 8.5" centerline.

Bryce
03-22-2010, 08:54 AM

Summit delivered my new pistol grip shifter last week so I will get it installed this week and be able to flog teh car again and test my new shift light.

Bryce
03-25-2010, 05:48 AM
Im getting excited about the new tire swap. I just need to pull the black wheels off and put them back on my 95 mustang, but they get atleast two new tires. Then buy two new centerlines 7" wide and pull the centerlines off my 95 mustang and buy four toyo R888 235/50/15 for the four centerlines and install on falcon. Im predicting about 1500 total for this entire swap.

Bryce
04-05-2010, 07:11 AM
I installed the new shifter. Much better than the B&M hammer shifter that I previously put in. I think it even shifts faster, HAHA. There is less force needed to shift so I can actually pull it faster.

I also found that centerline offers a 15x9" wheel with a 7.25" backspace. That will work perfect for car in the back, since i have a stock width 9" housing. Once I do a minitub and fabricate the 3-link i will have room for that and a 275 tire.

The huge bar to keep it launching straight? do you need that with a 4-link if it cancels the driveshaft torque?

I keep changing my mind on wheels. Here is what I am currently thinking.

http://www.tswalloywheels.com/alloy_wheels_nurburgring.php

Its a TSW wheel.

http://www.tiresdirect.net/TOYO_Proxes_R888_245_40ZR17_91_P5093.cfm

Also I found this seller for R888s at really good prices. I would like to have this combo.

245s on the front

http://www.tiresdirect.net/TOYO_Proxes_R888_275_40ZR17_98_P4744C789.cfm

http://www.tiresdirect.net/TOYO_Proxes_R888_315_35ZR17_10_P5094C789.cfm

And one of those on the rear. Obviously after I do my minitub and 3-link.

Yeah By the time I build the three-link and minitub mine I will be able to fit a 345 with plenty of clearance (275's fit Stock!). Dusters have a lot of rear clearance. Your falcon doesn't look like it was blessed like that from the factory.

Bryce
07-22-2010, 09:45 PM
You are lucky, a minitub will let me fit a 295 maybe. but a 315 will require some frame notching. The main issue is the rear quarter is not a radiused wheel well. I am covering about 1/3 of my wheel now.

Bjkadron
07-23-2010, 07:18 PM
How is the front spacing? Dusters can fit 245's and 275's fit but can rub occasionally. It is kinda strange that two cars that are almost the same size have TOTALLY different clearance for tires.

Bryce
07-30-2010, 06:54 AM
With my front suspension I can fit a 245 and still have the stock steering travel with no interference or rub. But with as light as my car is a 245 will be plenty.

Bjkadron
07-30-2010, 01:12 PM
What is your target weight?

Bryce
07-30-2010, 01:22 PM
Im at 2690 now. In the 2590 range would be cool.

I might be stopping progress on this car to take on a new challenge. jooint venture with one of my dads cars. I handle suspension/chassis/ and aerodynamics.

The car is already a offset rear 3-link. ford powered. and 2600lbs. Target weight would be under 2100. Steel body......

So I have to figure out all logistics and plans for this car in the next couple weeks and decide what I will do.

Bryce

Bryce do you know what the inside measurements are for your valence? I have a wider radiator in my car and I was wondering how it would look. Also, did you have to have to wait long when you ordered your hood from Crites? I have not been hearing kind things about their customer service lately.

Bryce
08-14-2010, 04:46 PM
I have a friend that is a crites dealer. The wait was about 4 weeks. I love my hood. I had it on my car in a few hours after I got it home.

I will need to measure the width. Form memory its 20" I widened it 3/4"

fordsbyjay
08-14-2010, 05:33 PM

So the complete 3-link plan has been put on paper. Front cross member for the UCA chassis mount will be first and design will start on tomorrow.

The only dilema I have is the tore I want to run. I need to nail down a tire diameter. I know what width I can fit. I guess I will run a 25.6 diameter tire and a 245 in the front maybe a 275 in the back. Some good progress pics will be up soon.

I will post my geometry this weekend!

Two questions...

Where is the geometry for your three link?

And How did you attach your aluminum core support?

My dad bought a car this weekend, 1965 ranchero (the new tow vehicle after we build it), so I have bee distracted and did not spend enough time plotting out suspension. I will be working it tonight tho.

My aluminum core support is bolted on; therefore, it is easily removeable for engine swaps. There are a couple of tricks in the design that I have no pictures of.

Bjkadron
08-24-2010, 04:01 PM
Cool tow vehicle!

I thought it looked like it was bolted. But did you reinforce the sheetmetal or is it not loadbearing anymore. Seems like it might be inclined to rip.

Bryce
08-24-2010, 08:05 PM
If you look closer, I would post a pic but im on my phone, you will see the tube on top is the load bearing structure. The tube is bolted and the connection is reinforced. The plates are really just stiffeners. And there is no issue with ripping out. There has been zero change in plate locations and no hole oblonging.

Bryce
08-25-2010, 05:55 AM
So as of yesterday I have a new direction with my 3-link. This will probably save me 30-40 hours of fabrication. I am exicted. I will post pictures when I can.

Bryce
08-28-2010, 09:11 PM
So the TSW wheels have way too much B/S and wont work on my car. So now I am rethinking everything, still trying to fit within the budget. Here is my new plan... http://centerlinewheels.com/wheels_detail.php?mw_id=117&sw_id=946

these wheels 17 x 8 in the front and 17 x 9.5 in the back with these tires...http://www.falkentire.com/Tires/Passenger-Car/Azenis-RT-615K-14 245 and 275

Maybe these tires would work too...http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+PS2&partnum=445YR7SPORTPS2&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes

So what do you think? I need to pull the trigger soon. I guess I will be calling Jon at drivers Inc on monday.

Hey Bryce,

How about something along the same lines as the TSW but with a cast (mag look) center and polished lip - the old school but still great looking Halibrand Kidney Bean:

Looks good what the weight of that wheel?

The centerline wheel only weighs 18 lbs for a 17x 8

Wouldn't you know it, I just went to the Halibrand site and it says the Kidney Beans are temporarily out of production! My advice would be to contact them via phone and find out what's up, or contact Wheelvintques (http://wheelvintiques.myshopify.com/products/billet-lakster-5-lug-88-series) about their billet "Lakester", which is a knock-off of the Halibrand. You could have the center of the Lakester powder-coated or sand-blasted to kill the billet bling and leave the polished lip.

I don't know the weight but I'm sure the guys at Wheelvintiques would have it readily available.

BTW - My wife came home this weekend and told me about a '66 Fairlane, original 289/manual car with black interior; told me I should buy it! I think my wife's taken up crack, she's NEVER told me to buy a car before! I might have to check it out and put a pair of Lakesters on it myself!

Bob,

I appreciate your help, those are out of my price range at the moment and I need wheels stat. Another project is stealing the wheels of the falcon.

Well I pulled the trigger and ordered the front wheels from centerline with a custom finish. Supposedly you can only get the custom finish if you order directly from centerline. I should see them in a few weeks.

So I put up 5 more flourescent fixtures in the garage, super bright now, I love it. The falcon comes over tomorrow and rear suspension will commence. Hopefully wednesday I will have some good pics to show. I will show the geometry graphs. Everything always takes longer than I think it will.

The falcon is at my house, safe in the garage. I measured rocker flange height at ride then lifted the car on jackstands. I lifted front and back the same. This way I can make accurate measurements from the ground.

Wheels are off and went to my dads new ranchero. My front wheels are on order. Hopefully moking up the fronts this weekend!

The car looks really good in my garage. The new garage lights work great, no dark spots.

crites performance parts http://tiptopwebsite.com/websites/index2.php?username=colson43&page=5. this place had a ton of falcon and comet parts. and I remember reading that you were wanting to get more fiberglass parts...

I have a crites hood. And fiberglass fenders from unlimited products and front valance. The only thing left is a trunk lid. I might be getting that from crites at some point in the future!

Thanks for the link.

I have always heard good things about their quality but unfortunately I have not heard anything anything good about there shipping times lately. I might need a hood next year so I was thinking of ordering one. :fingersx: I do like their new and improved website.

edit: I see their "upcoming shows" section is a year old so I guess it is not so new now.

Is he still a dealer because I would like to order one?

I dont think he is a dealer anymore.

Good luck getting your crites hood. I hope there are no issues for you.

I just decided to buy the rear wheels 17x9.5 with 6.5" BS. Got a package deal from centerline so I took the chance on them fitting.

I really like those tires. I looked at them when I bought mine but they didn't have my sizes then.

Im only going with a 275 in the back so these tires should work great. Im going to put them on my 95 mustang to get a baseline and see how they work.

Craig,

Thanks, the falcons are a great starting point. The light weight is a bonus!
