Need some wheel ideas...

The only part of my suspension that isn't upgraded is my wheel and tire combination, and I'm ready to take the plunge.

I'm in love with the Vintage Wheel Works V40 but the fact that the selection of 17" tires is getting to be fewer and fewer by the day is making me think twice. I would like to go 17x9.5 front and 17x11 rear with 315's out back, but there arent many choices out there.

My default idea is to just run 275's all around on 9.5" wheels and be done with it. I would rather have a staggered look, but at least the performance is there.

I'd like to have either a cast aluminum, argent, or gunmetal 5 spoke wheel with a polished lip and a somewhat vintage appeal. A set of flat or satin black wheels with the FM5 style would be nice, but I don't want to spend more than $2k on wheels before tires....

Can you all throw some wheel ideas at me please ? I have a black and orange thing going on, so they have to be semi-dark wheels to set it off right.

Is that your car by any chance ? That it the car that sold me on these wheels. If so, do you have any shots of the front and rear profile of the car showing the width of the wheels/tires ?

Also, a severe drop all around is in order. It's nice to drop the car for the cost of lowering blocks and an alignment with torsion bars.

That's about all I have on file with those wheels from those angles you asked for...I can tell you they are VERY high quality wheels and they are a great period-look for any '60-'70's musclecar.:cool:

I know you have 9.5 inch wide wheels, but what are the different backspacing and tire sizes ?

I think I'll set the backspacing up similar on my car and run the same size tires.

Is that CF spoiler readily available, how much does it cost ?


My friend has a repro glass Camaro spoiler on the front of his 68 Charger and I'm going to do the same on my car.

Yes,I have assorted 9.5" rears I run on both Camaro's and the b/s remains a consistant 5.5".I run 285/40-17's w/o issues,but some cars will require a 275/40.
That being said,I am having a new set of Rushforth Superspokes made for this car and the rears are 18x10's with a 5.625" b/s and 275/40-18's.These will have the rear hub pads shaved just a hair to give me just a bit more clearance since squeezing those on my lowered car will be a tight fit.Jon @ www.driverzinc should have them to me in just 4 weeks (7/18 ETA) so stay tuned for more pictures...:pics2:

Front c/f spoiler was available from Tyler @ ATS but I don't think he offers them anymore...

Tirerack.com shows 11 different 315/35R17s out there. Seems like there should be something you like. The 275/40s were standard on a few vehicles so those will stick around for a long time. Plenty of selection in those sizes. There is also a 255/45 and a 285/40 which are the same height and give a staggered look.

Hey John, what size are the front tires ?

On the V-40's they're 245/45's and on the AR 200S's,they're 235/45's.
Reason being is the b/s on the V-40's is 4.75" whereas the 200S's are 4.5"...AR won't do 1/4" additional b/spacing.

That being said,my new 18" Rushforths will be 4.875" front b/s to allow just a hair more clearance.:yeah:

I love the turn around time too.... 48 hours on most VWW wheels!

Another option would be the Rushforth Wheel "Fuel". Order it with a Charcoal Grey center, and you would have the right look for that car, in a billet wheel.

I just got off the phone with Vintage Wheel Works, the tech said that I can buy a 17x9.5" with 5 1/2 backspace and test fit it. If I don't like the fit, I can return it and try another wheel.

Yeah AJ...if it surprises you believe me...it came out of left field for me too,I had no plans to order another set but when I saw that display wheel Jon had made up,I was sold.
I feel bad in a way because Jay and I had talked so much about Fuel and yeah,I woulda leaned that way naturally so in fact...the Superspoke order goes completely against the grain of what I normally do...even down to the exposed hardware...which usually I'm against.

Sometimes,I even surprise myself...:rotfl:

That being said,the Superspokes will rock the look of that car since so much of it is blacked out anyway and I wanted a darker wheel..It'll lean a bit away from the Trans-Am look I have with it now but hopefully,it'll look somewhat modern at the same time and it'll all blend nicely.

Sounds like it shocked Jon as well...lol.
