View Full Version : 3rd brakelight on 67 camaro

I added a third brake light to my 67 camaro, in the spoiler. Since the brake and the signal use the same wire, I get a flashing 3rd brake when I put the signal on. Anyone ever install something similiar? If so how did you split the circuit to keep the 3rd brake light on when the turn signal is flashing? I was thinking of running a seperate wire to the brake light switch, but I don't know.

Your brake signal wire should be separate from your turn signal wire. I can't remember the colors off the top of my head but once you get that straightened out, you'll be able to wire it up correctly.

on old cars without divorced turn signals you will need a new wire rom switch under dash to light.

The wire, is one of the wire on the brake light switch above the brake pedal. You have to use a test light to get the right one.

I agree, come right off of the brake switch.

I wish someone would make a damn spoiler with the light already built in.
What's involved in putting the light into the spoiler?

Not a lot...
I just used a dremel to carve out an opening for a C5 light in the spoiler of mine. Then just drilled a hole in the deck lid for the brake wire to run through. I did "dimple" the deck lid a little to get enough clearance for the light, but I think it would clear if I would have mounted the light up higher in the spoiler.

What's the part number of that light assembly? This is something on my list for Penny Version 1.2
Any pics of the inside of the spoiler showing the light installed?

No pics of the inside. Didn't think to take any... Might be something that I'll have to do.
I saved the label from the GM package that it came in. I'll have to dig through my boxes of stuff to see if I can find it. I thought I had it in an Excel spreadsheet of my parts, but guess I hadn't thrown it in there yet. I tried finding it online, but I'm not sure if it is a GM number or not, but http://www.corvetteamerica.com/cf/displaylearnmore.cfm?learnmoreid=371&idlist=32,1098,2208,3944,4398,2209,64,30,2107,51,5 0,33,65,107,5334,2115,164,165,166,2521,204,3487,25 8,3394,2884,3078,2050,5334,3304,841,164,165,2371,1 66,2521,3487,4465,5510,262,5058,258,3078,286,4046, 2050,320,321,204,2949,262,2609,5058,5059,1532,258, 3347,3394,2884,3078,286,1434,4046,2050,2072,1424,2 464,320,1150,331,2464,2142,301,320,319,318,3178,31 6,331,302,321,258,1371,370,369,1218,1324,371,2634, 1670&searchdest=%2Fcf%2Flearnmorelist%2Ecfm%3Fsubcatego ryid%3DX860&subcategoryid=X860 has it on there as 38502. I don't remember the cost that I paid, but I think it was around $100 since I got it at employee cost through my roommate at the time. I can't remember if it came with the wiring pigtail or if I had to buy that also.

Here's a pic of mine and it is a C5 light as well that I just bought off of Ebay for less than $100. I didn't have to dimple the lid to make it work. We actually glassed in a couple of blocks to screw the assembly to - sorry, don't have pics though

I saw pictures of two 67/68 1st Gens with 3rd Gen Tran Am spoilers. I thought if they could do it with a regular one, how about one of the later ones with the brake light?
Bought one off of eBay and had a scrap trunk lid to mock it up on. Because of the sharp downturn just at the rear of the body it has to sit forward a little, so the contours match up from the side view, but it still looks like it belongs there. The width is perfect for those years too.
Sorry, never took pics and the parts are in storage. It was just a mockup at that stage, but when I'm ready to repaint I'll be putting it on.

Here's a couple pix of mine with a 2001 Cavalier light. It's very small in depth, so no dimpling of the deck lid was needed. It fit flush with the inside of the spoiler so I just ran the screws into a couple of clips to mount it.

that looks real nice. I may put mine in the panel between the glass and trunk.

I noticed that 2000+Monte Carlos have a similar light to the Vette one shown above (at least on the SS model with a spoiler I saw).

Yeah, I think the light is common across different models, but didn't get a list from my old roommate on which models they listed it for.

The Monte carlo light is bigger, it mounts inside the decklid. I've got a Cavalier light for mine.

I agree with you Mike--but unfortunately the local police disagree. I was forced to re-wire mine during safety check. As has been said, the only way to do it is to run another wire from the switch under the brake pedal. Very simple to do, but, as you know, if you want to run it with the other wires going to the rear lighting harness, you'll need to take a chunk of your interior apart to run it.

I have been looking for a setup as well. Here is what I have found

It looks a little long - 15.5 inches, but it could be a misprint.

The light part number is, 22611505-LAMP HIGH MOUNT, the plug is,12085481-CONNECTOR REPLACEMENT PACK, the longer version of the plug, with the longer wires is,12148769-harness assembly. The light fits up to 03-4-5 Cavalier, unsure on what year they start.

I think I prefer the rectangular Cavalier light. It seems to flow better with the taillights on the first gen

I also noticed the 3rd light on the Dodge Magnum today (too much time sitting in traffic everyday) might work as it has a little more of an LED look to it to match the taillights better.

I also wanted to add a 3roiler (69 Camaro). I ended up purchasing an LED light from Watson Streetworks a couple of years ago (car still under construction). They have several choices, including billet frames:
http://www.watsons-streetworks.com/leds_plus.html
The Light I picked (Part #L58SMB) is designed to mount from behind and to be sanded smooth with the body and eventually clear-coated over. Since I am painting the car red, it is my hope that the light (when not lit) will blend in with the body.
Here's a picture after the initial install...

I have a 67 Chevelle and a spolier wasn't and option. I ended up using a LED 3rd brake light from a Tahoe (1998 and older) and mounted it on my rear deck lid inside the back window... It matches my LED tail lights and you can see it for a good distance. Right now I have it just hooked up to one barke light and it flashes when I signal left.... :crying: My idea was to hook it up to BOTH brake lights BUT put a diode in line with each positive wire from left and right light... This would keep it from feeding back to the brake light and basically makes an "OR" logic circuit... but this will still let it blink if you have your signal on and you don't have your foot on the brake... The wiring is just a theory... Havent had a chance to try it yet.... Radio Shack has a pack of diodes for like $1.94 . . .
They came out bad .. the camera take crap pictures at night ...
One close...
