Thanks for the compliments guys, I am pretty excited that I am starting to make some progress. I am going to "visit" the shell today to check on the progress. I believe he is a little behind, but he is supposed to have the shell totally torn down to the skeleton (roof support structure). The skeleton goes to the blaster to be media blasted and then primed on Monday. "Supposed" to have the shell back next weekend. It takes him 40-50 hours to rebuild an entire shell.
I cant wait to see what the shell looks like! So far it looks like it is gonna be killer! What wheels, paint color?
Paint will be '69 Trans Am paint scheme (I have all of the T/A body stuff: hood, rear wing, fender scoops) but not the traditional white/blue. Exterior color will be applied to the firewall, inner fenders, and rad support. The color combo will be 1 of the below:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
...which do you guys prefer? I am leaning towards the platinum/silver combo (the Ford GT).
For wheels I am considering 17" up front and 18" in the rear. Not sure of which wheel yet, but I want something that looks more traditional with a black center. :dunno:
Your guys thoughts on colors and wheels would be appreciated. I need to make both of these decisions soon.

I stopped-in to see the progress and Tony is in the final stages of stripping the shell down to the internal "skeleton." It will actually be torn down a bit further than these pics show (believe it or not!). Tony says it will be totally reassembled by next Sunday 11/19!

You definitely should, you are close by! He has the cheapest prices on body panels plus seeing one of his shells in person will amaze you. Take my word for it, my friends were stunned when they saw one of his '69 Camaro shells he was shipping to Georgia a few weeks ago. at the moment he has 5 Camaro and Firebird carcasses laying around waiting to be "reborn."
If you stop by next weekend, you should see mine just about done!:jump:

One other thing I have seen on a 69 is painting the front bumper body color I think it really adds to the look of the car

I would call his 800 number if you already know what you want and you just want to place an order. You will typically get his vmail or his sister will answer (his sister runs the parts reselling portion of the business).
If you want to speak directly with Tony, I would call his direct line 603-247-1570 which I think is actually his cell phone (I feel ok about posting this number as it is listed on his Business Card). I get him about 90% of the time and I only call him on this line. Also, his direct email address is also

Looks very good.
Wish I had the funds to go the same direction you are with your bird. Down the road after colege perhaps...
For wheels I'll also make mention of the Wheel Vintiques billet Rallye II wheels.
Or with the Ford GT paint scheme you could go with a CCW Classic with the black center. That would look nice as well.

Not quite as far along as I had hoped, but it is good progress and the time delay is not Tony's fault. The sanblaster didn't get the skeleton turned around as quickly as he was supposed to so Tony was only able to get the floor done. Oh well, no big deal, the shell will be totally done by next Sunday! :woot:

Hi Phil,
Just spent a few hrs going through your web site. Quite impressive! I now understand the $1,000 over budget signature....
I'm right behind you, I have to replace the roof, quarters, tail light panel, and install new DSE tubs. I've been waiting for 2 months for the quarter panels. Now the Holidays are almost here and I won't get the new parts on the car.
I'm sure enjoying looking through your build for the moment knowing what I've got in store for me.
Good luck and keep the posts coming!

Hi Phil,
My project is a 67 Camaro. Your guy is on the other side of the States I think the shipping would bite. I need both R&L quarters. I'm told another week or two so lets see. I'm out of town for another week and a half. I gues I can wait.
I just spent the day with Astroracer and now have enough work to keep me busy for a few weeks anyway.
Thanks and I wish I were where you are at now, but am glad I didn't find as many problems when I removed the paint. I knew I had to replace the Roof and possibly the quarters. I could probably live with them, but really don't want the bondo.
Thanks again,

Hey Wayne- Thanks for the compliments. I have been very happy with Tony. I also recently heard about Mike's Customs, but have never spoken with them. Being so close to NH, you may want to give Tony a shout just to see what he can do for you.
Roger - I hear ya about the stickers. Still undecided, but most likely will be removed. I assume that they would look pretty beat-up after some mileage anyway.
Hi Brian - Any pics of your car? What size garage you building?
Ron - I think Tony charges a flat $99 shipping on all Goodmark orders under 150 lbs. If you get in a jamb in a few weeks, he may be a good back-up plan 4 you.
I think I have decided on the Platinum with Silver stripes (like the Ford GT) for paint. It will have the Trans Am stripe lay out.
I should get the shell back on Sunday, then it goes to the bodyshop for seam sealer, primer, and paint. I am only having the underside, firewall, and jambs done in final paint 4 now. The body will stay in primer during the rest of my build. I have 2 children that like to "help" in the garage and I would be nervous about the paint. :scared:
My subframe is gloss black and I was considering having the shop paint the body color (platinum) on the underside as well (I have decided on a 1-color engine bay: firewall, inner fenders, and rad supprt all in silver). Besides showing the dirt, any other downsides to doing the bottom of the car in the body color? Would it look like crap?

Hey Wayne-
Yeah, I am just a bit anxious. :seizure: After all, this started waaay back in July when the car went to the body shop, sat there untouched for 3 months until I started getting the daily bad news on all the covered-up rot. That's when I found Tony for the shell rebuild.
The body shop picks it up from Tony on Saturday, then they take it and seam seal, prime and paint the underside, interior, firewall, and jambs. The exterior of the car will stay in primer until I finish the assembly. So I hope to have it back from the body shop by Christmas. We'll see. I hate dealing with body shops. :box:

Wow! Lookin good! I wish I had that ability, to rebuild a car like that. Most people would just crush it but I like the challenge! (Sick huh?)
Anyway, I vote for the GT colors. I too think that would look killer with the TA stripes.
I'll add to the applauding for taking her down to a skeleton and putting all those new panels on it. Another one saved!! Woohoo!
For being so far down to bare shell, you're got some good progress there and it's gotta make you feel pretty good.
Keep the updates and pictures coming, we can only take so many Camaro updates here!! :)

The shell is completed and back at the bodyshop for seam sealing, primer, and final paint on the bottom, firewall and jambs. Tony did an AWESOME job on the shell. The body shop hopes to be done by January, but I am not holding my breath. The color will be Tungsten Grey Clearcoat Metallic w/ silver stripes as found on the new Ford GT. However, the stripe layout will be the original '69 Trans Am scheme. The bodyshop will install the subframe on the shell. Once I get it back to my garage (rolling), I will be working on getting the engine installed and get to work on the interior.
Tony had to re-use the old tail pan as they are not reproduced:

Not exactly sure of rubber yet, but all 4 wheels will be 18s. I have the wheel-rite tool and plan on putting the largest rubber I can with the stance I want (lowered 3").
I actually considered mini tubbing and decided against it, mostly because I didn't want to cut up all the new metal. :scared:
This may sound like a dumb question, but do you think the caliber of the build is negatively impacted by the fact that it is not mini-tubbed? I did struggled with whether or not to tub, I hope I don't regret not doing it.

Why would you say that? If there is a purpose towards the style or need in your build, by all means do it. Efffect the caliber of build, that's just BS. Look at my car and tell me if I need to mini-tub. To each his own.

Chill out RP! It wasn't meant as a negative comment! LOL!!!
Its just that all the top cars go thru this mod in these times, to fit tires that reflect the performance aspect of the build (not to mention to transfer the power to the ground!). With the engine thats going in this bad boy it just seemed that it would have been a natural...+, Money doesn't seem to be the object of the build here, so i' was just wondering why its not Mini'ed.
I'M glad your satisfied with your small (:poke: ) tired car...As it does, in fact, look good.
I don't think it affects the car at all if you like it 69T/A. But doing this with the quality of craftsmanship you have in your hands...i don't see where the the trouble would have been! (Its not too late you know...hehe)

Must feel real nice to finally see a roller, Good things come to those who wait !! ( BOY DO I HOPE THATS TRUE ) I hope you have heat in that garage it must be cool up there. Did you guys get alot of snow we got 2-3 inch and it all washed away. We brought the car on Jan 18th we left in the pouring rain until we hit Conn. Then it was snow until N.C. 19 hour to make a 14 hour trip . I spent about 1 1/2 hours with Mike, he has it schuled for the end of March. I keep watching his site to see progress on any car. Thanks for asking. Wayne

I was on vacation with the family all of last week, so not a ton of progress, but the car is now in my garage and I have installed the Dynamat:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
...Some advice, WHERE GLOVES WHEN INSTALLING! My hands are covered with tiny paper (or aluminum) cuts. It took me a lot longer to install than I expected...about 10-12 hours. :scared: And I still need to do the doors and roof. I have 2 pieces left after purchasing 2 bulk packs (72 sq ft total), so I will end up using about 2.5 boxes total. I installed it under the cowl and up to the dash in the front. I have some 3M rubberized spray that I will be using on the interior on the qtrs. and hinge area.
Up next is to install my harness that Frank helped me order from American Autowire (the one with the connectors already intalled).

You may want to take your dynomat one step further. Check pic below.
I have upgraded my firewall with extremeliner over my dynamat, then installed the factory pad as well. This is what the tech people at Dynomat recommended. I have no heat issues from the firewall even in 90 degree heat.

Suprisingly, there weren't any deep cuts. The chrome was simply warn off. If I did have any cuts, I probably would have tried some light sanding with fine sandpaper.

Morgan - I missed your post, sorry for not responding. I am thinking a year to a year and a half to complete. Feel free to stop by when you are in the area, just drop me a note. I am right off of Route 495. As for shows, I am relatively new to the area so I am not sure which ones I will be attending. How many cars do they get at the Worcester show?
Wayne- I did not paint the dash. I thought about it, but once I cleaned it with some dish soap and a scrubby and used some armor all, it didn't need it!

There is a crack where the upper left corner screw goes, but it is easily glued and concealed. I don't know how these are to find for the Camaro, but Firebird dashes are getting VERY hard to find, aren't repro'd and usually have the radio area hacked up. I have seen good ones go for $800 on eBay. This one came with my project car and I feel VERY fortunate to have it. Especially seeing that it has the wood applique.

I can't believe you had to replace more panels than I did! You really are sick. Find a good psychologist and get on medication quick, before you loose your mind and soul FOREVER!
You work looks to be top notch and it's really nice to see another Pontiac restomodification from the ground up. Are you doing the jig work and everything yourself:hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: :hail: , or hiring out:eek:     ?
Great job on the dash carrier, and I(like Roger) also favor the stock dash set-up. I kept mine looking stock, but changed over to real wood with the stock instrumentation. My only stumbling block with this decision so far has been my FAITH in the stock gauges, even after they were restored. It's hard to rely on them to monitor the vitals on a motor that you've put tons of time and $$$ into! In trying to keep things neat and tidy, we fabbed up a panel to hold several autometers in the useless glovebox. This is tidy but not very practical, and will probably need to be changed at some point.
Let me know if you run into any supply problems or if you need some hard to find parts. If I happen to have some left over your welcome to them. Pontiac stuff is hard to come by!

I wish I could claim that I had the skills required to rebuild the shell. I was fortunate to find a guy 15 minutes from me that rebuilds 1st Gen Shells (what are the chances?). Tony at Musclecarmetal (www.musclecarmetal.com) really took care of me. He is a dist. for Dynacorn and Goodmark and I ordered qtrs through him and stopped in to pick them up. Once I saw his work and realized how bad my shell was, it was a no brainer to have him do mine. I had already purchased all the metal, so he assembled it for a lot less $$ than you would expect.
I replaced the speedo with a repop, but do have the concerns that you do. Mine only has dummy lights and I will be going with a hood tach too.
Pontiac FB stuff is getting VERY hard to come by. Especially for '69s. Thanks for the offer, I may be pinging u in the future! :) My car was a dissambled project car when I bought it and I know there are missing parts!

442- I need to update the injury page...there have been more! Lots of scrapes and bruises. :injured:
For now, I am thinking of keeping the interior stock with the exception of adding shoulder belts. I have a really nice original console that is hard to find and it would be a shame not to use. I was thinking some aftermarket seats covered to match the stock vinyl, but I will start with the stock seats 1st. Nice dash, btw. Had I thought about it a bit more, I may have gone with new old school style gauges instead of buying repro stuff.
zman- I hear ya on the car being too far gone. I felt as though I was too far into it to start looking for another shell and the reality is, most of the ones avail would have a lot of the same issues (qtrs, floors, rockers, etc). At least this way I know it is all metal and straight! I am fortunate that I have become friends with my local shop owner so he takes car of me (as well as a body shop can). He gets my stuff through pretty quick. I have read so many stories of projects sitting at the body shop for years! :hand:
Deuce - I ordered right from browell. Ask for Scott he is in the back actually fabbing their stuff. If you have a Ford or Chevy, they will have one on the shelf. They had to make my alignment tool from a chevy tool as the Pontiac stuff is diff. They charged me the "off the shelf price" which is $125 + ship.
Thanks for the compliments too!

The motor/tranny need to move forward about 1.5" and the tranny mount is making the tranny hits the tunnel. The motor is not bolted down yet (but the bolts are in the mounts). Pontiac engines are off center to the passenger side from the factory so don't sweat that. Also, the engine can rotate in the sub to bring one side up or down. I had to take advantage of that and prying the engine all the way forward to get my TKO to fit.
I used a different crossmember so I can't help you with yours, but the sub should have two sets of mounting holes I believe.

...The pics are a little deceiving as they are taken from an under-car angle. They are actually very tight to the bottom of the car. They are almost on the same plane as the subframe. I am very happy with the fitment of them. They are from Global West.
I also got my stacked water/oil gauge pod from GaugeGear. They are made specifically for the '69 Firebird and go in the clock option location. I like 'em!

235/40/18 up front with 4.75" BS on an 8" wheel
275/40/18 out back with 3.75" BS on a 9" wheel
I went with 40s vs 35s as I wanted a little more sidewall. I probably could have gone with a bit wider 245 up front, but Frank at Prodigy mentioned that you wouldn't notice the difference and the 235 is a "safer" choice.
Don't go by the rear back spacing for your car unless you have a shorter 9" Ford rear. This will give the rears a real nice DEEP dish with that back spacing. :yum:
I was also a little conservative on the rear and I may have been able to go with a 285 on a 9.5" wheel, but I measured with a wheelrite tool and it was going to be VERY close and I didn't want to risk it not working out.
I can't imagine what the tires look like in person for you guys running the 315/18s. The 275/18s looks massive to me!

I was originally going to keep the interior totally stock, but I have decided to go with Procar Rally seats:

...as Procar now has a matching rear seat cover avail, so I can keep the interior consistent and do all the work myself (I have already stripped my rear seats down to the springs). The stock seats are just so uncomfortable and I think these will be a great upgrade.

Thanks for the compliments guys. At the moment I am wrestling with recovering the rear seats with material from ProCar to match the Rally front seats and trying to get the qtr window mechanisms and widows squared away (patience required!).
I also discovered, which I am sure most of you already knew, that the '69 rear seat frame bottom is different on a 'Bird than a Camaro due to the 'Birds rear arm rests. :hand: So I am TRYING to get the Procar covers to work (they only make them for a Camaro), but I am not sure if I will like the final results or not. I will know this weekend as I am close to having them done. I have a stock 'Bird seat cover as backup, but I would prefer to have my seats match.
As for time frame...I try not to think about that too much and just stay focused on making progress. I was hoping to have it a driving primer car for this summer but time is slipping away.
I ordered my Rick's tank a few weeks ago which should be here in 3-4 weeks (praying), my wheels should be here in less than 2 weeks. I still need to get the dash buttoned-up and focus on final driveline stuff, fuel line, and engine harness.
I am hoping I can be driving in primer by end of Summer, but this may be a bit optomistic. Either way, I want to send it to paint jail next fall/winter when I can't be driving it anyway. :fingersx:
I'll have some more pics of progress this weekend, for those interested.

I haven't uploaded a bunch of new pics that I have, but I have been making progress.
As I mentioned above, I am going with Procar seats (so much for staying with the stock interior! :spank2: ) and I did not like what I could accomplish myself with the matching Procar rear covers (they really needed to be cut down and re-sewn), so I am having a local upholstery shop do this. I should have them back next week.
My Rick's tank came (only a 2-week wait via Jeg's!) and I have the tank along with their sending unit already installed in the car.
I have ordered my fuel line, pump, fittings, and filter and they arrived today. It should look pretty slick, I am using black braided line with black -AN fittings. I hope to have the fuel line in this weekend.
Still waiting on my wheels from Bonspeed. 6 weeks has turned into 9 weeks and they still aren't here. Bonspeed says they just finished them, but they are waiting on center caps. I should have them at the end of next week (with some luck).

The rear seats are back from the upholsterer. They were covered with the rear seat kit material from ProCar that will match the ProCar Rally 1000 front seats. I had the upholsterer cover them because they are for a Camaro and the Firebird rear seat is several inches narrower, so they had to be restitched on the ends:

Last time I checked, you could only get it for the hardtops. I really wanted it for my car.
That's interesting, I wasn't even aware that there was a diff. between 'vert and coupe glass. What is the diff?

The '68 Bird has been a bit of a distraction, but I am back on the '69.
Got the fuel line to the firewall. I will be running it under the heater box and into the fuel log from the back for a "cleaner" look:

Changing the heater core to a Camaro big block core/cover to push the heater hoses away from the back of the valve cover:

I hope the 'Bird body doesn't reject the Camaro organ. :lmao:
Oh yeah, and I made a new mascot too: :dunno:

looking great Phil,
one suggestion is to get that fuel line up over the pinch a bit. You don't want the lowest part of your car's body being fuel line.

I was going to say the exact same thing. Needs to be as tucked away as much as possible

Thanks for the feedback guys. I took your advice and flipped the clamps the other way to move the line up behind the body seam:

Okay, back on the '69. I sold my summer driver '68 Firebird (aka "The Distraction") over the weekend. No more "other" cars until I am done with the '69. My wife even made me promise her. :slap:
Fuel line is now complete:

The line looks tight here, but it is not...plenty of clearance:

Also installed the headers...one step closer to getting th motor fired up...

...darn dust. See what happens when you don't work on it for 8 weeks???
I also order my Procar seats today. I hope to have pics of them installed this weekend. :naughty:

Phil, sweet as always.
What brand headers do you have, or are they custom pieces?

Thanks Cliff, they are Doug's headers. I am rally happy with the clearance at the steering box and they are nearly flush with the subframe underneath.

Phil,
I see you also have a Canton pan. Does it have a wind. tray on the bottom? Maybe a part#?
Thanks!

Hi Cliff-
It does have a tray, but the engine was assembled a few years ago and they "customized" what what was avail. at the time (i.e. I can't use a stock dip stick and I had to "clearance" the pan a bit). I believe there is actually a new (and better) tray available now that will circumvent these issues.
I have always had good luck with Butler Performance and they have a few tray options...scroll down this page:

If you are looking for one, I would give them a call and see what they recommend for your application.

Installed the ProCar Rally front seats today. There are well made and VERY comfortable. I love the side bolsters and the adjustability (they fold back flat). The install was fairly easy. Per usual, some hardware was missing but they were all common bolts that I could replace. They compliment the interior perfectly and fit very well. They look pretty close to the console, but the bolsters actually angle up and just over the console. I wouldn't want them any closer, but the fit is very good. They are perfect for me, but I am only just over 5'8" and about a 38" waist. I would think anyone over 5'10" would need to do some "adjusting" to the seat adapters (I have heard of others having to do this). But for me, the fit is perfect. I couldn't be happier with them:

Looks good Phil If people didn't know, they would think they were a factory upgrade they fit so well. Is that it for the interior, or is there more to do ? Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

I second the comment on the seats, very nice! I have been debating what to do with my seats to keep a factory look in my interior, those are killer!

The interior (minus the doors) is just about done. I need to align the qtr glass and get the dash buttoned-up. I ordered Simpson camlock belts over the weekend (just lap belts).
I really want to focus on getting the engine fired-up at this point.

Bad news and sorta good news on the build.
The bad news is after trying and trying to get the engine level in the car, I took some measurements and found that the subframe is bent. It is bent about 3/4" down on the right front. Doesn't sound like much, but it is.
The good news is I just ordered a new subframe from Speedtech with a unisteer rack. This pic is from their site:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
Using the stock subframe (which was pitted in areas) without a rack was the only thing I had regretted on my build to this point.
I will be transferring all of my GW suspension over to the new unit. It should be here a week from Friday.

Awesome Phil!
I can just hear that conversation with the wifey...
Honey, you remember when I needed to do ___ and ____ for the new pool you wanted? It was worth it, right? You are happy, right baby?
Well, I have a little problem with "wicked bird" , you know, my other love....she needs a new front end. So I ordered it.
When it is all done it will be so cool and everything will fit up just right. Don't worry, it's under control.....
