The subframe comes uncoated and it still is. I need to test fit everything as SpeedTech doesn't make Poncho engine mounts yet. Once I test fit everything in the car, I will take everything back apart have the subframe powder coated matte black to match other components (wheels, valve covers, etc.).

Speedtech subframe in the raw...working on transferring everything over. Once I get everything installed and the Pontiac engine mounts fabbed, I will disassemble and have the frame powder coated:

Hi Rich-

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

I have the motor set in the new sub and have had my fabricator over to look at mocking up some motor mounts. We will need to tweak the stock Pontiac mounts and build new perches. He mocked up a set, but is now on vacation until th end of next week, so "WickedBird" is sitting idle for the holidays.

Just a quick update, I put the new subframe under the car today with the motor and headers for a final mockup. Everthing lines up nice!

I just need to have my welder over to final weld the motor mounts. and then I disassemble everything from the subframe, have it powdercoated, and put it all back together!

Now that I have confirmed that everything aligns, I (again) removed the subframe from under the car, put the motor on a dolly, and started stripping all the components off of the subframe.

Speedtech sent me some additional gusset supports for the shock mount area (I believe they were getting some deflection under heavy road racing), so once I have it stripped, my welder will be back over to weld the gussets and final weld the engine mounts (they are currently just tacked in place).

...then off to the powdercoater and FINAL frontend assembly!

Hi Sam-

You are correct, no white area of the lenses for the reverse light.

The engine mounts on the subframe have been final welded. We also added guessets to the upper control arm mounting area that Speedtech had sent me. I believe they were getting some deflection in this area during road racing.

It is off to the powdercoaters on Monday!

It's almost fitting that on the day that it is leaked Pontiac will be shut down...my Pontiac comes to life!

About 2 months shy of the 3-year anniversary of the build.....IT'S ALIVE!!!!!! :woot:

Tonight we ran the engine for the 1st time on my freind Kurt's home built test stand. We ran it for about 15 minutes and it ran right at 175 degrees with 50 psi of oil pressure at idle.

The crappy movie below is taken from my phone, IT SOUNDS MUCH BETTER IN PERSON!!! The carb was custom built by a friend of mine that specializes in custom built holley's and the thing is nasty. It combines holley and demon-like qualities and has a hair trigger with absolutely no hesitation.

The video sound sucks...but check it out:

Here's a better video:

http://www.69taposer.citymax.com/enginerun.html

...It does not have a wild cam, but the entire package was designed to work together well and reach peak hp at 5500 rpm (longevity). I am leaving a little hp on the table (lift) with a relatively mild cam (hydraulic roller). The software dyno says 525 hp and 550 ft lbs of torque and we think that is probably pretty close. I will post the engine specs later today.

As you will see from the stand and the garage (a friend of mine), this is a "backyard build." :)

Dropped off my core support, doors, and fenders at the media blaster today. I am hoping it will start looking like a car within the next 4 weeks! :twothumbs

I also removed the driver's side header (again) as the steering shaft for the rack is clearance issue. I know this may be coming. So I have a "tube" shop re-routing 1 header tube. Of course I will then need to have the headers re-coated.

Warning: naked parts! :geek:

Doors and fenders back from the sandblaster today. The pics are of the totally stripped parts. The doors are unreal. The previous owner had ordered these from the midwest back in the mid-90s (i have the receipt) they are mint!

The fenders are from CA. A small repair required on each one, but they are both in VERY nice shape. Way better than using repro fenders...

Hey Rich! Nice to hear from you. How is the truck project coming along?

As expected, I am waiting on the bodyshop for my radiator support and additional parts so that I can mount the radiator. They are also painting the door hinges so that I can get the doors mounted. I hope to have them today or tomorrow. Most likely tomorrow.

I have been working out a few small things including re-adjusting my front seats (they were too close to the dash) and fixing a power steering fluid leak.

Also, I have started to address some of the issues that have popped up along the way...

I installed my steering shaft for the rack and it hits not 1 header tube, but 3 (just my luck). So I am now having custom stainless headers made. Anyone ever use: http://www.stainlessheaders.com/customheaders ? I spoke with them yesterday and they are sending me their mock-up kit.

Here is what the mock-up kit looks like:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/07/Ford20Custom20HeadersJPG-1.jpg

And here is the finished product of the above mock-up:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/07/Custom20Headers20FordJPG-1.jpg

Another issue that I have is due to the big bearing Ford 9" rear end I am using, my Moser axles have a large 3" diameter flange and the hub bore on my wheels is about 1/8" smaller in diameter. This results in the wheel not sitting all the way down on the Wilwood rotor hats. :squint: I spoke with Bonspeed and their wheels don't use the axle flange for centering the wheel, so they recommend having the axle flange machined down to clear the wheels. I just need to see if the machine shop that I use can turn the axles. Just a heads up, let your wheel company know if you are using a Ford 9" rearend. This somehow got missed in the ordering process.

If a have any good pics to post of progress, I will post them later this week.

Those headers look awesome man.
Please be careful when you start up/break in that nice engine. Be sure to use EOS. The 462 in our bird is running like crap now backfiring through the carb. Timing seems OK so I have this pit in my stomach that the flat tappet cam has gone flat. Need to get it to my engine guy to confirm but have been dreading it. If that's the case it will need a complete tear down after only 5,500 miles.
Oh well......

Sorry to hear about the flat tappet cam issue. Guys with those cams around here are running the Valvoline VR1 racing oil with higher zinc or they are running an oil additive. What were you using for oil? My '69 has a hydraulic roller cam, so I hope to avoid the lobe wear issue.

Thanks Wayne, I will post some pics of the mock-up process and the results. :)

No new pics worth posting yet, but I have been working hard on the Bird.

The radiator support is in and I have created brackets to mount the AFCO alum radiator. The rad is at my welder's shop where he is tigging the brackets on.

Also, the rear axles are at the machine shop where they are taking care of the wheel interference issue. Should have them back tomorrow.

The fenders are repaired and the inner fenders have been blasted and are almost ready for paint. My hinges are being prepped for paint....the doors are the next to get installed.

I have been doing lots of research on driveline angles as I am getting ready to locate the pinion angle of the rear axle (I am using the DSE adjustable pads). I am measuring and getting ready to order my drive shaft from CC5Speed. They have recommended a 3.5" aluminum drive shaft based on my HP.

Talk about project creep...the picture below just blew me away. I may change my stripe color. What do you guys think....

Flat black stripes:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/05/camaro07-1.jpg

Or stick with the silver stripes...?

Try to tie the stripe in with the shade / color of the inside of your rims. Silver rims = silver stripe. Black rims = black stripe...
Good stuff so far!!! :-)

Okay, thanks guys! I will stick to the plan (silver stripes).

Today I set my pinion angle and measured for the drive shaft. I will be ordering the shaft on Monday.

I also pulled the rear out as I was using the adjustable DSE leaf pads and they need to be welded now that the angle has been set. While it's out, the welder will also add 2 brake line mounts then it will go to the powdercoater.

I got the radiator back from the Welder and will get that mounted tomorrow and post some pics.

Thanks for asking Wayne... :)

I received the mock-up kit from Stainless Headers Manufacturing (http://www.stainlessheaders.com/customheaders) and was able to mock up the driver's side yesterday.

Here is what they do:

Thanks Steve, I do have some updates. I finished the cooling system with the addition of a recirculating catch can, re-mounted the rear fuel filter with a nicer mount, re-routed some of the rear fuel line, and started on the wiring.

I will post some pics this week. I hope to have the wiring completed within the next 2 weeks.

I bought my car as a stripped project,so I don't have the luxury of having taken it apart, which makes it a bit harder. I do have a colored wiring diagram which I would highly recommend getting to use as a guide.

The AAW is mostly "plug and play" but the connections aren't marked so you have to know where to "plug." :)

Got a call from Stainless Headers this morning to verify my request/mock-up. They go into production today! They take 3 days to build.

Should be shipped to me by Monday so I should have them by next weekend (or thereabouts).

GREAT!! :attn:

I look forward to seeing how they came out...

Did you take any pictures of your "mock-up" assembly so you could take some "actual" pictures in the same fashion to compare them???

I'd be interested to see how they match up... :)

Yes, I have about 20 mock-up picks, some are here: http://www.69firebirdbuild.com/stainlessheaders.html

Zman- I actually worked thru Frank at Prodigy with AAW to get a Firebird specific wire kit. At the time, I don't think it was on their site, but they were able to make it!
