Question on Covans Dash insert...

I was looking to purchase one and was curious as to how it actually mounts. To me, It looks like an overlay os some sort and would just cover the old existing dash and be held in place with some double sided tape or some screws.
Any one have one in their Chevelle, the sweep style?
Any likes, dislikes?

All the ones I've seen screw in place of the original. It's not an overlay. I installed one in a '68 Camaro and it wasn't too bad. Fit good and looked clean. I went with a custom aluminum piece instead on my '77 Camaro, but only because I'm running more guages.

Well, I put one in a 71 El Camino. It was the SS with gauges, but anyway, the fit wasn't real bad, and the finish of the black version that I got, matched the factory grain pretty close.

Frankly, it was a lot of work. I removed the whole dash carrier, and you have to cut out a large piece of the original dash that gets covered by the Covan part. It is an overlay. The top part of the Covans uses the stock screw locations.

I ran into these issues:
1. No provision for headlight switch. (I mounted it on the bottom of the dash in a downward position)
2. The slot for the wiper switch is too small.
3. If you want to use a stock location radio, it must be cut out.
4. The bottom part of the Covan is attached by 6 visible screws.
5. Must drill and install LEDs for turn signal, and high beam indicators.
6. The Covan harness is from AAW, top notch stuff, but the factory harness won't plug in, so you have to cut and put terminals on every wire.
7. The speedo that comes with it is electronic, which is fine, but you need to get the sender for another $65.
8. Mounting the heater/ac contol panel.... you're on your own pretty much.

I could go on and on, but here is what it looks like with just the dash pad removed.

The 70-72's are an overlay and some trimming is required, but the fit on the sweep style dash insert was nice. The SS dash overlay requires the headlight switch to be re-located, which can be interesting.

I piece I used fits in place of the factory. We made some mods to ours because we didn't like the plastic look.
