85 monte SS, 383 sbc t56 and disc brake
9" this winter, already added spc upper and lower arms lowering springs on all corners currie trac arms Kat Skinz leather interior (highly satisfied) jeep steering shaft. Next projects will be big brakes frame boxing and possible cage. I have a twin turbo set up on the shelf but handling and braking are a bigger priority now, the 383 moves it down the road quite well. glad to be here. Jamie

Hi,
Currently in the middle of a frame-on '87 Monte SS build. More of a resto-mod than anything else, with new 350 crate motor and pro touring suspension and brake upgrades.

@Bigbird3 - Keep up the work. My dream is over five years in the making and I can't even drive it on the street yet. You'll get there man!
I dreamed for years that I would get my cutlass, and I finally did and maybe I did it too soon, but I tore straight into it and have worked on it as I have had time and money for almost five years now. I know that it will be great when I am finished.
Yours will too.

I then cut into her and stripped all suspension and interior. Interior is all cleaned and replaced and back to stock other then a set of Dakota Digital gauges.
Drivetrain is a 5.3 w/EFI from a 02 Avalanche, T56 from 02 Camaro, Front and rear brakes from a 04 Z06, SPC Stage 2 plus, SPC lower A arms, SPC springs (see a pattern here lol) Hellwig sway bar, SC&C chassis brace, The list goes on and on.
Car currently has 75miles on the build and still needs a few bugs worked out.

I have a few G-bodies. Had 9 or 10 at one time, but down to 3 or 4. I have a 1978 Olds cutlass, it came with a chevy 305 but now has BBC 468. Went 11.16 @ 120 best. Drag race car now but considering pro-tour. I have a 1985 (sleeper) Cutlass w/455 Olds and F-41 suspension parts. Everything underneath car is new but the car is a 20 footer, looks good from 20' away. I have a 1986 Cutlass, was a one owner car only driven two winters , never wrecked, never rusted. Has 143,00 mile 307, have a brand new rebuilt 403 ( .40 over = 409) ready to go in this spring. Also a 1987 grand prix frame that has already been frame notched and reinforced. Waiting for an extra $250 so I can send it to the sandblaster. It was a 69,000 mile car so not much rust. I wanted to post some pictures here but have not figured that out yet. The frame notch car will be a biggest tire I can fit car probably w/ a BBC or a BBO.

Guys and Gals,
Wanted everyone to know that Vintage Air kits and front fender extenders (was included with GNX's in 87) are now available for our g-body. I will contact the sellers and see if they will join us here. Maybe we can get a few more supporting vendors here to help Larry with the bills.

Hi,
I have a 1988 cutlass supreme. Right now its all original with the 307 Olds engine in it still with 406000 on it. this is my first car that I owned myself and i feel lucky that at the age of 20 i have a car I can wrench on and make it as fast as possible. I plan on making this car into a fun driver but with the capability of doing track days and autocrosses. I joined the forum to ask questions to find out what other people are doing with their G-bodies.
Glad to be on the forum look forward to hearing and seeing what other have done with their cars!

^^ X2 on the well said.
Some aftermarket parts I would like to see are:
- aluminum cowl hood(s) 2", 4"
- deep front inner fender tubs for big tires
- rack & pinion kit
- trunk/seat reinforcement bars
- replacement dash cluster pod, that can fit some gauges AND keep the A/C
- rear frame bolt-in crossmembers
- interior door panels / rear seat panels
- billet hood / trunk hinges
- electric window motor/harness upgrade kits
6 YEARS LATER AND WE STILL DON'T HAVE MOST OF THIS STUFF.
At the very least, G-Bodies should have some aftermarket "design" for hood/decklid hinges. Rack and pinion would be huge. TMI Interiors should add G-Bodies to their line as well.
I think plenty of people have G-Bodies, but I'm not sure how many that do own them, want to put the parts into them...with the associated cost to do it.

Well, mine is completely scattered at the moment with the entire suspension and brake swap. Here is when I was just getting started.

On the parts front, I am thrilled to even have what we have. The reason I haven't done anything to date is quality adjustable control arms and certainly "better" anti-sway designs compared to even the factory F41, add on bracing, steering components, and much better brakes have only become available at all in recent years. Now, I won't be turning my G-body into a C5 or 6 but even thinking that is nuts. I am purely looking for the . . . holy crap, that's an Oldsmobile out there? And, just the fun of doing it all before going to the great salvage yard in the sky . . . :twothumbs

Wow, that's a flashback to 2011...
From the original post:
Some aftermarket parts I would like to see are:
- deep front inner fender tubs for big tires
- interior door panels / rear seat panels
- billet hood / trunk hinges
- electric window motor/harness upgrade kits
A few updates or alternatives to this partial list:
- replacement dash cluster pod, that can fit some gauges AND keep the A/C
Several panels available for gauges fitting into dash cluster
Also Dakota Digital has new panels with the latest features as a drop-in replacement
- aluminum cowl hood(s) 2", 4"
Still no aluminum hood, I bought a 70+ pound Goodmark 2" cowl hood to replace the stock 70+ pound stock hood.
- rack & pinion kit
still no known Rack & Pinion bolt-in solution, although several full frame replacements are available, and have it: Schwartz, Roadster Shop
A definite upgrade from the stock close-ratio units:
Performance re-valved/benchmarked Delco 670 steering box from Lee Performance, as Lee is back in business (may have delays due to finding decent cores)
Performance re-valved/benchmarked Saginaw 800 series boxes, also from Lee Performance http://scandc.com/new/node/848
- trunk/seat reinforcement bars
Make your own still is available... I used some 2" flat steel, one X in each seat 5 bolts per side, also one horizontal bar across the rear deck bolted in.
http://www.motortopia.com/files/cars/album_audiogear/4e2ecfa926b4d/138-3870_IMGJPG_Thumbnail1.jpg
- rear frame bolt-in crossmembers
1- UMI Performance has a rear shock tower brace:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/03/3055a_LRG-1.jpg
2- U-Haul class2 hitch works great to tie together the loose frame ends, and add some needed structure. It evens works with the stock SS exhaust hangers, just need to swap L/R hanger brackets and reverse clamps.

G-Body owners are hilariously cheap as a group. And the platform is limited. There is only so far you can take it with bolt-on parts. You can easily make it wonderful on the street, but running at the pointy end with modern equipment can't be done without fabrication, and that's beyond the skill and resource limits of your typical G-Body owner right now.

You most certainly are being POLITE in your description of your fellow G Body Owners!
The ONLY cheaper bunch that I know of are Foxbody Mustang owners. It takes 4 of em to raise $1,000 to buy an $800 car!

I see a lot of G-body guys being chea...er...thrifty and cost conscious for whatever reason, some of us just have to. Sometimes I wish though as a group we'd pull our heads out. There's no such thing as cheap performance unless generally you replace the word cheap with garbage. No matter what we build there's some cost involved and many of our G family just needs to accept that. That doesn't mean you have to either build a $60K+ car or go home, you just have to spend a little time to know where to put the money to get the results you want. Much better than jumping on FB and the first question you ask is "where can I get cheap suspension for a pro touring build?"
Because my wallet dictates it sometimes I'm pretty cheap...uh...thrifty too, but for prolly less than 15K I have over 500 n/a SBC horsepower, an incredible suspension which is all bolt-in (besides a small bracket welded in to swap to coilovers up front), brakes that stop the car well and a gnarly wide stance. Most importantly it's an absolute blast to drive and so much fun to play with the import boys at SCCA events. It's got a cool name too, but that was free. ;)

Hey Malibulvr- who'd you get your front air dam from and is there any chance you could measure your ground clearance below it and below the frame rail just behind the front wheel for me? Thanks!!

Hey man, I like the set up on your Malibu, looks like a great driver. I asked on the forum about your air dam, figured others might be curious too so I asked there instead of a private message. If you would, take a look at it, and let us know. Thanks!!
Sorry Ben, I’ve been a bit out of pocket here lately. Thanks for the compliments I only wish the car looked as good in person as it does in the pics, lol! Lots more to do to it. The front air dam is actually a one piece front bumper as is the rear. Mine were bought a few years back from Heads Up Composit’s, but they are no longer in business. I do believe there are several companies making a similar product. Keep in mind that these are really intended for a race only application, as it replaces the bumpers, saves a lot of weight, but has absolutely zero structural support in case of a collision or accident.
I’m working on the fuel system now thinking about swapping my 6.0L over to EFI. I’ll try to take a few measurements for you and let you know.

With the large influx of g-body enthusiasts to the board as of late, I've been wondering just how many g-body owners we have on pro-touring.com. Could all of the G-body owners post in this thread so we can get a rough estimate. Just year and model or a simple "hi" will suffice.
Thanks,
HI, new here, 78 malibu factory 4 speed. doing a frame off restore. Looking for what is the best suspension kit/set up to achieve the best possible handling ?
Thanks for having me here,

It's been pretty quiet in this thread so i think this is perfect place for me to post first message on the board.
There's bunch of aftermarket front subframes for most of the GM classics like f bodies and so on...
Is there anything new to G-bodies lately?
I'm building my self roadcourse race car from 87 regal;
Rear end will have custom truck arm suspension kit with panhard bar and 4-way adjustable Öhlins ttx coilovers, but the front end is still an mystery that i haven't decided yet.
For the front end i already have afx spindles, umi performance race model coilover only lower arms, spc adjustable uppers and also Öhlins 4-way coilovers.
Anyways what i think is that the stock g-body front subframe is narrow as hell. What i mean by this is that the stock pivot points of the control arms are very close to center line of the frame. This is not by any means good starting point on any performance autocross/roadracing application.
One possible way to try widen the front end would be install littlebit longer lower/upper a-arms, but like i told earlier i have already purchased aftermarket units and the UMI-performance arms are designed so that i would not even be easy to modify them if i wanted so. Also the longer arms don't fix the fact that the pivot points are very close together.
My car has slightly bent passenger side front frame rail because of old accident and also it would just be fun to re-design the front end geometrics for possibly better outcome.
What brands are selling " Stock style " front subframes to the G-body chassis?
How different are the 1977 impala front frame geometrics?
https://howeracing.com/index.php/fabricated-impala-type-front-frame.html
Something like this howeracing front clip would be perfect for my personal project.
Thanks you,
Rick from Finland

Not sure I'm following this. I've been away from the G-body for a few years now, but I thought that the lower arm was pretty much the same as the one used in the 3rd gen F-body. IIRC, it was the upper arm's inclination that was the G-body's real handicap.

I have no issues with the front geometry on my G body, the front works fantastic with just a little bit of tweaking.

I have been around G-bodies for a long time mostly Buicks but always had a soft spot for the Oldsmobiles.
Here is my latest project which will be back on the road this spring. I have owned it since 2005 except for a time I traded and then bought it back. I did a frame off resto-mod that I finished in 2011. It was mostly stock appearing with a built 249" stroker motor and 6768 turbo. I had a GN I was racing at the time so the car was more of a driver show car. I traded it to a friend who pretty much just stored it for me for 5 years and I bought it back in 2016. Car still sat and I started updating it in 2018 and it is almost done. It now has an off-center 3.8 Stage 2 motor with champion heads, converted fuel system to E85 with racetronix 725lph with PTFE fuel lines with 160# injectors, upgraded to ECU-GN MS3-Pro and I am now finishing up with the ride-tech/UMI/Viking/Baer brake upgrades and ditching the drag race suspension.184885184886184887184888
