View Full Version : G-body Roll Call
Ralph LoGrasso
10-09-2006, 12:30 PM
With the large influx of g-body enthusiasts to the board as of late, I've been wondering just how many g-body owners we have on pro-touring.com. Could all of the G-body owners post in this thread so we can get a rough estimate. Just year and model or a simple "hi" will suffice.
Thanks,
olds87

My info is on my signature.
There is a post while back about how many g-body cars on this site. Sort of grow a little, if I correct or not.

I used to have an '86 442, T-tops, Grey & Silver. Some stupid lady ran a red light and t-boned it. Hit it on the driver's side, just behind the driver's seat, so hard that it opened the passanger side T-top opening up by 1/4" to 1/2"!
I took pictures of it, but I have never found the film... argh!

It is a thought, but overall we like vehicle unity on pro-touring.com. Segregation gets tough because if we give one make/model their own forum, then all of the other makes want the same thing. We'll see, though.
GBodyGMachine
10-10-2006, 02:36 PM
I agree with you about the segregration. I think the unity idea is better. Just throwing an idea out there.

These are getting more and more popular by the day. Now if we could just get the aftermarket to fill some of our needs we'll be fine.
If companies like Goodmark, OPG & others would put a little more R&D into the G-bodies they might realize there is a REAL market out there for them to invest in. Thats if they haven't already started to look into it. Just my opinion.

I got a friend who has aneither 85 or 86 Grand Prix 305, auto. power windows/locks.
I am picking it up so I can drop my old 402 BBC in it for a solid storage container AND the engine doesnt sit under a tarp again through most of a winter.
And the still running 305 will go into my 77 Monza till my FI 283 is done as i am looking for 2 more 040 forged flat tops and another rod(machine shop friend hasnt dug one up yet and without a garage) and I intend to hook both car up with Air Ride Technologies. I al ready have it on my 78 C10 (soon to get a 91 R model dog house and a better bed.
I intend to pull the 9000 series bags out of my truck as its my tow vehicle and daily driver and swap in a set of the 9100 (I think thats it. The 2000lb springs), get the brackets and swap the 9000s into the rear of the GP.
The fun part is I am also redesigning the suspension on my Hbody so soon Ill have it burning corners with the best of them.
By the way could/does anyone have good , honest to God measurements on the proper 17 or 18 in wheels to fit this GP with max width and not rub.
I have to get different wheels and can get a set of Ralley type copys in either steel or custom aluminum but need width/back space.
And had anyone ever done the Southside Machine liftbars/73-77 12 bolt Chevelle swap. I know they make a set to install the older 12 bolt and have a LOT of extra gears as a local friend has been swaping gears sets like I change my underwear (well ok I change everyday he seems to change every week but you get the idea).
I prefer the strength of the 12 bolt and my buddy has lots of 12 bolt parts sooooo.
Thanks
Lee

not yet, i will update as soon as we get it back, we went to pick it up and in the booth it was awesome, but when we rolled it outside we found a spot were the gold color seemed to puddle up, just a little 6" spot, you couldn't see it in the booth, so they are striping the door down and re shooting it this week it should be done this Friday, soon as i get it home i will take a few more pics, we haven't picked the wheels and tires yet, we are going to use Colorado customs for sure, not sure witch one

Also late to the roll-call. 1980 Buick Regal Limited that has been in the family from day one. Started as a 3.8L 2bbl V6, now has a L98 TPI 350 (EFI intact) with a 200R4 overdrive trans. Modified GN Buick exhaust system. Boxed lower control arms, boxed upper and lower rear trailing arms. 3:42 gears with an Auburn limited slip. 1989 Iroc front springs and quick ratio steering box. F41 front and rear sway bars, and frame reinforcements. 16X8 GN Wheels with 225 50 16 Fuzions.
Looking to do the GW UCAs with the 12" B body spindles and 1LE rotor, and installed the 1989 rear Iroc disk brakes.
Wanted to keep the car looking grand-ma like, although the exhaust kind of gives it away, to keep with the sleeper look.

Only if it got rid of the 4-link and went to a Watts-link or something that allows the solid axle to articulate more. That is just for starters...

Let me correct my first post. When I say we I mean my boss (Jeff). We use a triangulated 4 link like the existing design. The links are tubular steel with teflon-lined spherical rod ends. QA1 coilovers are standard and there's a Air-ride option. This is of course for our existing A body and 1st gen camaro and mustang applications. Call Jeff at the shop if you would like more clarification. www.schwartzperformance.com I think we can convince him to build one if there is enough interest.

It depends on the damage and how much frame metal is left. Usually the frame has been rotting for some time by the time you see the cockeyed bumper. I simple replaced the whole frame on my malibu when I got it with a good one. They are cheap enough and probably an easier fix than repairing the old one. Plus you can box the new one before you install it and notch it also if you want to. I pretty much jacked my car up, removed the frontend, and then unbolted the old frame. Rolled the new one (with all new frontend parts, engine, tranny, rearend, etc) back under the body. What a difference to the "same" car.
On a sad note, my malibu now has a new home and zip code guys, just could not keep em all.

Well I'm new here, and while I have not begun my new project, when I do it will be a '86-'88 Monte SS. My first car back in the day was a '86 SS and I still regret getting rid of it. So my plans are to get another one in memory of the old one and do everything that I wanted to (but couldn't afford to) do back then.

Over 2 years ago I brought my 81 Malibu classic to a guy to have a cage installed. Things went very wrong and I chased after it and eventually got the police involved and they located the guy in a hospital. I got my Malibu back just before Memorial Day weekend. Got it painted it over the holiday weekend and color sanded it on Memorial day. The cage is being finish welded this weekend and then I'll buff the paint and start reassembly. Color is Audi Imola Yellow. I'll be puting a new black vinyl Laundau roof back on. Interior is now black with race buckets.

Way late to the party. As my name states I have a 79 malibu with a 6 speed transmisson from a 96' camaro. It was organilly going to have a tune port engine but now plans changed and im looking into building a 400 h.p. ls engine and using an ls 6 speed. Ill try to get up picks. So far this project has taken 8 years. The body was pulled off the frame and blasted. Then painted torch red. Before I was a member, I thought I was hi tech with all the hotchkis suspension upgrades front and rear. I used eibach springs and bilstien shocks. It has a monte SS steering box. The clutch pedals are form an 80 cutlass. I planned on some budnik wheels(fontanas) but ater hearing that they are way behind and take forever to get a set I feel let down and lost. The car used to roll on Weld Evo 44's in 16"x8"s and I thought they were big back then. I plan on notching the frame and using an 18x 10 back wheel with 295-35-18 bfg rubber.

Hello all
Add another too this roll call.
Recently my wife and I have been frequenting the Gatlinburg TN area, we both agreed rolling thru those awesome twisted roads in the family car jus aint cuttin it.:drive1:
So gotta get the Regal (now that I got running good) up to par to handle those roads.
Dont think the 15x7 GN rims in all 4 corners, the 205/60/15 tires in front, and the 275/60/15 in the rears are the best set up to truely enjoy those roads on.
I have poly bushings front and rear stock suspension, with GN front rear sway bars, and faster ratio power steering gear box from a GN.
I just recently got for free realy nice set of 245/50/16's, maybe thats a start.
Heres a link to A web site I started for Big Block G-bodied owners,
it's small and it's new but check it out.
I named it 7.5 G's

I have an '81 and '78 Malibu. The '81 is a bit of a junker body-wise, but I put a mild 350 (Vortec heads, GMPP intake, Edelbrock carb, Comp XE268H cam, headers) in it, and it's currently got a Saginaw 3-speed (3.50:1 1st gear) with 2.29s in the 7.5". I also have a set of Hotchkiss springs, Belltech drop spindles, 34mm F-Body sway bar, F41 frame braces in the front, and a stock G-Body rear sway bar.

Now that the vendors and sponsors see that we have quite a following on this site...maybe there could be some kind of group purchase for g-body specific parts?? That was a major hint!!

I'd be happy if the vendors just started to focus on us for a minute and made some much needed parts like sheetmetal, interior pieces and so on. A group buy wouldn't hurt either.

WOW, it;s hard to believe that it's been almost two years since I posted in this thread.
I'm curious how many of us still have our G Bodies?
I've had mine since new and will probably be buried in it :)

I didn't get mine new, I have had the one with the LT1/T56 for about 10 or 11 years, but I have owned a G body since I have had my drivers license (24 years). All of them have been Montes. First was a 78, then an 84 SS, then an 86 SS, and then another 86 SS.

I still have my '88 SS, coming up on 6 years now. Here's a couple recent pics - new wheels, and it's a bit lower since the last pics were posted.

I still have my '85, a little more than 18 years now. It used to be my daily driver till about 3 years ago.
I've put a whole 3500 miles on it since Sept. '06. Of course that includes sitting in a body shop and waiting for motor work for a year out of those 3 years. :)

84 SS, just getting it back on the road after an 8 year hibernation, new engine, tranny, steering box, all under the hood is new. Some other updates here & there, a 2"/1" drop this month, tires/wheels will follow maybe next year, yeah, budget went out the window this year.
I'll own this SS another 20 years.

G-bodies for the win! I have three. My baby is my 1982 Monte Carlo SS (clone), and I also have a 1981 Buick Regal, and a 1982 El Camino. The Monte Carlo was my first car I bought it when I was 14 (I'm 20 now) after mowing lawns all summer and it is getting the pro-touring treatment now. The Regal is a car I built as a driver for my brother to use until his GTO is finished. I have no pics of the El Camino I just bought it three days ago.
This is before my tear down of the Monte for its pro-touring treatment.

84 Monte Carlo . . . previously done, back to the drawing board.
Currently powered by a Vortec 5.7L with RPM Air-Gap intake, topped with a Demon 650cfm carb. Still has original, very scary stock suspension. I re-did the body when I was 16 (7 years ago). It looks alright but it needs to be tightened up and freshened.
Plans include a full suspension rework, starting with new bushings and C5 Corvette brakes, followed by a full-on regame including re-engineered geometry and frame stiffening.

Just joined a while back.My car is a 85 Grand Prix L.E. It currently has a Targetmaster 350 with a trans and rear out of two separate 87 Monte SS cars. Upgrades waiting to be installed..
36 mm 1LE sway bar
Zexel Torsen Posi with 28 spline axles out of G.N.
Front end currently apart using Napa "unbreakable" ball joints, need inner and outer tie rods, center link, and idler arm, bushings...
ZQ8 spindles with C5 calipers and 13in rotors
Still haven't decided on the wheels and tires though...
Drop springs still unsure if im going to use MOOG 5658's or some aftermarket ones..
Car came with the F41 suspension package and i finished collecting most of all the other bracings.
Non a/c heater box install.
Heavy Duty Radiator with dual fans out of intrepid still figuring out the wiring......
Thats all i can remember for now but i have owned it for over 11 years now and just can't seem to get done with it...lol BTW here are more pics. Let me know what you think:smoke:
