First post on here, but been following some of the builds for over a year. Been working on putting plans together a 67 twin turbo Camaro, 4l80E trans, Chassisworks G-street chassis. Goal is to get 30 mph on the street and 220-230 mph on the Texas Mile type events. Been racing top Alcohol Dragsters, Funny cars and A Nostalgia Nitro Funny car for the past 20 years so this street deal is all new to me. Will have to ask a lot of questions but this site seems to have a lot of talented people giving good advice. If I can figure out how to post pictures I will keep the progress updated. Stared with a rust free 67 which should shorten up the build time. Currently mocking everything and hope to have a rolling chassis by the first of the year.

Looking forward to seeing the progress, welcome to the site. Working on a 67 myself with some more modest goals and this site has always been good to me.

I'm excited to see this build! Any idea what aero upgrades you have to do to hit 230mph?

133160133159133160133159132948132949Still working on the design but were tucking the bumpers, removing drip rails. flush mounted windows Due to the speed were trying to run in the mile and still drive it on the street were trying to make it so the front and rear spoilers interchange. (race version wouldn't be friendly on the street) A mild version for the street and race version with front splitter and rear wing The hard part is designing it so we can make the changes within a couple hours. Working with a aero guy on the grill area also. HP helps also. Will post some renderings once we get them done to get some different opinions, ideals and thoughts.

Mocked up the dry sump pan and pump. Nice piece from Dailey Eng.

Wow, I have just basically finished mine... Could not imagine going that fast in it... or getting the MPG ! Question I have heard that its not the best idea to smash the 4L80e into 4th while maxed out on boost.

To your question on the trans The 4l80E will not take the HP under full boost but I am told that neither will the Trimac. We are having a custom 4l80E built with a lot of billet internals. With that being said, we are running a gear vendors overdrive behind the 4l80E trans. On the speed events we will run the 4l80E in drive and shift the gear vendor which I am told will take the load. On the street we will just run 4l80E in over drive and depending on what rear gear we decide on, we can use a double overdrive. Basically we will run the motor just above idle to get the MPG. (with manual converter lockup) Motor will have a large stroke to help the low end tug on the street. With that being said we will run 2 sets of injectors and 2 fuel complete fuel systems. The street mode will be running on a small set of injectors for the MPG and when the motor needs it, the larger set and secondary fuel system will kick in. My engine guy says he has a 427 LS motor getting 26 MPH so he don't think it a stretch to get 30 MPG As I stated earlier its a goal A lot depends on weight and aero and these are unknown at this point

With a lot of power I see no reason to run a 4L80e. I'd run a Powerglide with a GV on it. Gear the rear appropriately for the speed you want to hit. A Powerglide will take a lot less power to drive and save an easy 100 pounds.

You may be right but after several conversations with the engine builder and transmission guy we came to the conclusion that for MPG were looking for the 4L80e would suit the application best We discussed everything from a power glide, turbo 350 400 turbo t0 a lenco drive. The transmission guy first choice was a turbo 400 but we would give up MPG Also a buddy of mine runs a power glide in a 69 twin turbo with a 632 big block 3200# car and has went thru 3 power glides in 2 years and is currently switching to a turbo 400,

Fitting Roll Cage. It will come off the jig once we get the cage welded in. When we get it off the jig we will install the mock up block with front pulleys and stuff, install the front and start building headers, and running tubing to the intercoolers.

Thanks for the comments on the shop. It was my race shop and am in the process of converting it over to a UDOIT auto club ( which is where the name of the car came from) The ideal is for car guys in the area to be able to join the club and have access to work on or build anything they want in the shop. I furnish tool, lifts, welders, mill lathes, tube bender, notcher, sheet metal brakes, for a rental cost. Shop has infloor heat and fully air condition, lounge, TVs so if you want to anything from hang out, changing tires, oil etc. to building a complete hot rod. The concept is in the St Louis area there are a lot of talented retired guys that are motor heads that after retirement don't have a lot to do. If you get a group of talented guys that want to give advice, help or charge for there services it can be done at a reasonable cost. Already have a chassis guy body and paint guy, machinist and electrical guy on board. Any comments welcome

OK to chime in here, sweet car. Now let me state that a properly built 4L80E can handle boost once the gear is changed it just cant handle it on the change. Have a local guy who ran both a PATC 4L80E and a 5 spd and 6 spd conversion, and he has ran 1200 hp through both in OD at speed. He used his computer to ramp the boost back up in OD. Not saying I would do it if your already talking GV, but it can handle it at higher speeds as the torque has already peaked.

Jig is really nothing special. The pictures are on the first page that shows connection points. The Chassisworks pro touring kit uses the original front clip mount ( with a alu spacer instead of rubber) The inter rocker is cut out and the kit comes with a much heaver replacement ( it retains the original pinch weld) the crossmember also ties to the replacement rocker, the cage also ties it all togeather, and the final piece is the floor welds in solid which completes the final package. Hope this explains it and if not let me know and I will take some more pic of what your wanting to see.

Monza

I don't know how you know what the exact amount of power to back out as for what is safe to shift into overdrive but I don't care about tearing stuff because I guessed wrong. You also mentioned your buddy made about 1200 hp Does he run mile runs with the car? I don't plan on backing anything down on the mile run and 1200 hp is quite a bit less than what we are planning on making. I do know the guys running the mile are oiling the overdrive gears to make them live at speed and its not from shifting that was breaking them. Don't forget I'm a drag racer (not a throttle stop guy) and only know one way to get to the end and that's wide open.

Centerforce Time is always a problem (I work out of town 4 days a week) so you know what I am doing with my spare time Got behind at Christmas holidays
because I didn't get the header tubes and stuff ordered before and nobody was open between Christmas and the first of the year. Hope to build the headers in a couple weeks and fit the front bar. So I am about a month behind where I wanted to be but should be able to make that up. Only deadline is I have a date of spring 2018 at Recovery room interiors. As soon as I get the front bar in it will come off the jig and start on body work. I hope to have a nice but usable piece when I am done.

I hope to have a lot of fun trying to achieve the goals I set. I sure there will be some challenges but that's what I enjoy. The UDOIT also shop has challenges as its hard to market. There is no way you can sell it to the general public. Its a real niche business and if I didn't have the shop, tools and equipment I don't know from a ROI that it would be profitable. I plan on retiring in August so it kind of made sense when I retire to have a business that I enjoy especially with a group of people that can share there talents in clean comfortable well equipped shop. My big problem is I'm not a good salesman and don't do well promoting. Its seems to be really hard to find people that want to make a commitment (people that are consumed with cars that have the time, money and passion) that fits the group of people I'm looking for to join. I know they are out there but they are hard to find them, which is why it almost a person to person basis. I am planning on sponsoring a few car shows and open house to try to get the word out . I think if I can get a one on one and get them to the shop will help make the case to join.

No what his strategy was he was using timing retard with a shift kill set up, the engine "dies" momentarly on the shift, it is a millisecond "kill" it unloads the driveline for the fraction of a second, thus you never lift, the engine controler does the hard work. It's old trick some race bike builders use to not have to use clutch on shifts.

u mite want to add a front motor plate.Did u look at the flowtech holley turbo headers? They can be had for 200$. 304 ss 1 3/4. I would do 4l80e plenty of people in the 7s running 4l80e.Look at jakes transmissions or rpm transmissions in Anderson ,Indiana. Its not like u are going to run 1k on the street and get any grip and on the strip U shouldnt be going into over drive. Rear gear should be around 325.I have ran several turbo set up's and 4l80e 325 gear is the way to go.Never heard of shifting under boost hurt 4l80e it is a th400 with overdrive. I have never had any issues at 1278 rwhp .great build

duvall408w
02-12-2017, 07:50 PM
what motor turbos u going with? 220 -230 mph is huge. Ur rear gear is going to need to be lower than the 325 i stated and the 4l80e with a manual locking convert would work. Ur hp will need to be 2000+++or more to get to 230.I think the fastest 1/2 mile car was 238 buy a lambo.

It does have a front and mid plate, I wanted to build our own headers and I can't see how they can sell a set of 304 ss headers $200 and stay in business very long. I got more than that in the flanges. Haven't decide on rear gears yet. Probably end up with 2 third members to reach both goals. I guess it depends on who you talk to on the 4l80e trans but I was told due to the small dia gears they wouldn't hold to the load (not talking about shifting) with high HP and 230/240 speeds. Some guys are spraying oil directly on the OD gears to make them live. Engine builder at Venom Racing Engines tells me we should have around 1400 HP for the street and around 2400 HP and be safe on the tune. He builds a lot of turbo ls stuff and the head guy familiar with the mile run stuff.

:jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:That is some SERIOUS power! We guess that probably isnt much compared to the nitro drag cars you've dealt with, but no doubt still scary in any street car!

Centerforce;

Don't really know what you mean by aggressive but after talking to Bell they thought this would be the best design. They are still not big enough when we crank up the boost but we tried to use the available space that we had and still keep the tubing as simple and efficient as possible.

USAZR1

You may want to check with gear vendors as they advertise on there home page over 2000hp. When we discussed our project with Hughes and Gear vendors they think it will handle the power just fine, Don't know if you follow drag week but Larson makes about 3000 HP and runs high 5,s Lutz does about the same. I was told by Steve at Hughes they only made a couple tweeks to the gear vendor stock unit. No so much with the trans

We are using alu AN flared fittings on the low pressure side of the pump. Still trying to find the correct SS fittings for the high pressure side of the pump. (just not comfortable using alu nuts on the high pressure side although we will test all the lines/fitting to make sure we don't have a leaks prior to engine start up.)

Finished up welding and grinding welds on the tunnel area. Had to modify the trans brace to make room for the gear vendor OD unit and access nuts . Finished most of the work on the drip rails (got a couple small areas to fix where the lead that melted out)

Hope to install the mock up motor for the last time (before fore going to paint) and finish making up the rest of the SS lines, install wheel tubs, fuel tank etc

The tire and wheel combo is just for mock up. Once I decide on final paint and figure out tire/wheel size we can fit within the inter fender well, I will make that decision. There are pic of Watts linkage, on post #3, #37 #42. #37 is the right side support that still needs a support bar installed after I figure where the exhaust is going to be routed. If you need to see anything else let me know and I will take some more pic.

Dan;

I bought the Chassisworks G-street kit. Options I took were torque arm over 4 link, floater axle over normal axles, I took the 35 spline. The kit offers 13,14.15 brakes w/or w/o Emergency parking brake. I took the 15" with emergency brake ( if was to do it over I would probably go with a 14" brake. The 15" which requires at least a 19" wheel limits the size of drag slick you can run). I went with the Strange Alu third member. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks, Jeff

Looks like you switched the valve covers between when the engine was in the car and not that it is on the stand. What valve covers did you switch to, as they look like they will hide the coil packs vs. the ones from SCA that wouldn't. If you are going back to the valve covers from SCA, where are you going to place the coil packs? Thanks!

UDOIT
11-09-2020, 04:14 PM
Scotts Hotrods makes the valve covers. We are trying to go with the hidden coil vc because it makes the package cleaner. A couple issues with using them is that it takes a certain coil and it is not a high performance coil. We had a clearance problem with the rockers which we have solved. (Not wanting to machine the cover), and not sure if the temp will affect then even though they are vented. Didn't like our options on mounting coils but if the hidden ones don't work we will probably make a bracket an mount them to the front chassis support bars

Thank you! I am running the same valve covers that you had and was looking for a cleaner option as well. We have opted to go behind the engine, but it still looks a little funky with the coil wire and the way that it is routed.
