Is there a way to tell the difference between an LS3 and L99 other than seeing a manual or auto trans attached to it? Is there maybe a different number stamped on the block? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A l99 will have a water pump that is sort of spaced out as it has VVT and DoD which can been seen once you remove the intake the valley cover will have like a maze Pattern other than those two things the blocks and heads are the same

Don't the L99s also have VVT? LS3s do not.

That is correct. The easiest way to tell if you know what you are looking for is the camshaft timing chain cover.
