      1981 Trans am transmission

Hey guys I was wondering if there any modern transmissions that would fit into a 1981 Trans am transmission tunnel without modification to the tunnel. Looking to buy one soon but I know the mpg would suck so I'd like to know if there are modern transmissions to help get some more gas mileage out of the thing. Help is appreciated

An automatic, I would love to put in a manual but budget probably won't allow that.

The THM200R-4 was introduced in 1980. That means it was designed in the 70's -- pretty much the availability of CAD or any other modern manufacturing or design capability. The wore jumpsuits.

THEN they discontinued the THM200R-4 in 1990 -- almost 25 years ago -- when you could still buy a bag phone.

They weren't really great transmissions new. Some companies did really cool things with them and Grand Nationals and stuff, but 25 years after being discontinued, the odds of finding a usable core have greatly diminished. It's a dinosaur. To the OP, you can pretty much fit ANY overdrive trans in your TA with no mods. You might need to dimple the sheet metal near the cooling lines, but that's about it. Very easy install. We recommend 4L60E and 4L80E.

The simplest way is to replace the same trans you pulled out.
Look up Lonie Diers at Extreme Automatics in NC. Very popular with the Turbo Buick guys.
At least read the 2004-R info on his web site, then talk to Lonie and decide for yourself.
Works pretty good in my dinosaur lol.
I got the Stage II 2004-R and like it in my 56 Chev. I've done some research and not everyone can build a 2004-R. Check out the reviews on www.turbobuick.com transmission talk forum.

      Good Luck with your choice.
