    Thread: Halogen Lights?

    1. Halogen Lights?

      Hey guys,

Want to upgrade my 69 Mach 1 poor headlights to something thats gonna blast hard at night.

I have seen a roadrunner on here (dont remember the user name), had like an Eagle or something on his numberplate thing, and had these halogens that had like LEDs in a thin circle around the light itself or something, car was a silvery/grey with a black hood, 1970 roadrunner....

Anyways, im after something with a red glow rather than the normal old creamy look of a battery torch and i dont want the white/blue glow that some new mercedes etc have, i want the lights to have a firey colour, like red, but obviously, I doubt a pure red would be a legal headlight to have. Just needs to kinda have that hot look rather than cool look of the white. Any help?

Not a fan of Halogen lights.

    3. That response does not help. 1: it does not answer the question, and 2: it was a slam on halogens without pointing out the better alternative, options. 3: you got 3 posts Troll.

      Halogen Lights?

Red lights won't give you very good sight. To change colors you need HID lights. You could go with a Trucklite LED bulb, they're pretty cool but $500 lol.
Most modern replacements you get are halogen anyways. jeep wranglers have the same bulb.
      Hope this helps??!

You can search on ebay for those headlight. I remembered the roadrunner you mentioned. The owner got them from ebay, IIRC. Make sure to add relays in your headlight circuit if you still have the original wiring.

You can add Relays, here is a good read. And the Relays do help. I use Halogen bulbs in my 65 Falcon.

I like halogen headlights. I run Hella headlight in both my cars, (1979 Z-28 Camaro,1981 El Camino SS) The initial cost should not be $500.00. I would check around more. My Camaro and your Mustang basic have the same head light. With most halogen headlight when the headlight goes out .You just replace the bulb. And ther quite a variety of them out there. Colors ,brightness ,etc. Just make sure you come in conflict with the law.Especially when it comes to red and blue colors. Those are colors for law enforcement,And you will get a ticket.

I had these HID Projectors made, and there are company's out there that will hand build them to your spec, so I added the Turn Signal/Park light at the bottom, along with the LED Halo around the outer perimeter.. I had two versions made, one with the park/turn lamp, and LED Halo around the outer perimeter. And without the turn/park lamp, and with the LED Halo around the HID Projector shroud. A quality hand build light, with all the ballast and wiring, will run 800-1000 dollars..

Just remember that with sealed beam or halogen lights your legal, with ANYTHING else not rated for oem automotive use it can get you equipment violations as far up the chain as impounding. So proceed carefully before purchasing. As the money expend may cost you much more that simple purchase price. A buddy bought some aftermarket lights for a project car, he was recreating the Coyote race car from Hardcastle and McCormick, got him towed which actually damaged his car and cost him quite a bit of cash to get it back and the state that tagged him sent a registration revocation request to his state. took him finding different, automotive based lighting and he even had to find a shop that would work on the car and document its changes before his registration was given "clean" bill of health. All totaled it cost him well over $2500.
also remember this red and blue lights are considered emergency vehicle identifiers, even bouncing on road irregularities might entice a LEO to cite you for incorrect equipment. I know 3 counties in Indiana that will fine you $250 for blue dots UNLESS your car is registered as historic motor vehicle with no extreme exterior modification, ie it looks like old car or is titled as a kit car.
      Just a warning.
Also red headlights are VERY distracting and hard to see by, only just below blue light which blinds the human eye.

Eventhough you want a reddish tint I would recommend against it. Your best solution would be to install the headlight relays and use off the shelf halogen bulbs. No LEO hassles and you can actually see to drive at night.

Look very closely at the statement above yours. He is talking about HID lights with the LED ring around them. Completely different from Halogen in looks, performance, and pricing.

This is a very key component of things. Since -George- is in Australia and not the good ole USA, he may have even more stringent road requirements to look into.

    16. Seems a lot of modern cars run HID lights in AUS without drama.

What is the difference between HALOGEN and HID lights in terms of colour, lighting, quality?

Will you be inspected? Check your local statutes regarding the installation of HID aftermarket lighting in your older car. I converted to a relay system and H4/H1 set-up from Hella and absolutely love it. Brighter lights and real easy to retrofit. Here is the link for the folks that I used.

your mustang uses the standard 7" headlight doesn't it? A lot of the guys are going to the Jeep headlights now that are clear and use an H4 bulb I believe. Seen quite a few on 70's Camaro's so no reason why it wouldn't work on the stang too. Easy retrofit for modern lighting. Just make sure you use relays so you get max voltage to the lights.

You should read through Stern's website. He will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the lights available, and help you make a decision. The older Sylvania/Osram HID kits were good, had good optics with quality lens and reflectors made in Europe, but have been discontinued. The only thing available in HID or halo lights now is Chinese. Very sketchy optics, lens, etc...
