Anyone use a carbon monoxide monitor in their car?

I bought a $30 home unit for measuring carbon monoxide.

With the windows down, it reads 0 ppm.

With the windows up, and going freeway speed, I get 60-90 ppm. that is just above the health standard for a reasonable exposure.

Anyone else try this? I guess it means I have a leak in my exhaust somewhere... or could it just be the engine air coming through normally into the cabin?

Even the normal process of exhaling in a small, enclosed area could influence the reading. When the windows are up, do you smell any exhaust or get light headed?

This is the reason to seal the holes in the firewall and trunk. Does your monitor really measure CO or does it monitor the oxygen in the air. Our monitors that we use for CO measure the depleted oxygen in the environment. With that being said, it you have the monitor very close to your person, you CAN set it of, just like Fras stated.

Im a HVAC tech and saw your post yesterday so I turned on my little handheld unit I keep in my service van a 2001 Montana. FWIW it read 0 the whole 15 min trip except when I pulled up to a stop light with a bunch of cars it went to 1ppm and touched 2 for a second then back to 0 as soon as I got going again. Is your cowl seal still in place and in good shape?
