      Low profile 17" tires??

      I currently have 275/40/17s all the way around, But I want to lower my car as low as possible in the front and I need to know what is the lowest profile 17" tire I can get that is still wide, and is streetable? Thanks in advance, Danny

      IMHO I would not run anything less than the 40 series tires on my car.

      That is what I run now and I live in St Louis= (pothole heaven.)

      Anything less for me would be asking for bent wheels!

      I think anything less than 4" sidewall you're asking for a bent rim. I get to worry about potholes and railroad tracks where I live as well.

      You're running 275/40/17's on the front of a 69 Camaro?

      Yes I have 275/40/17s all the way around. I lowered the car today,( Heated the springs for a show this weekend). I ordered 225/40/17s hopefully they will give me half the height. Now of course my front tires are rubbing like crazy but the new tires will be in on Friday and hopefully they wont rub.

      You lowered it by heating the springs? Ummmmm, that's SCAREY!!!!

      If nothing else you should've removed them and cut them with a cutoff wheel. Heating the spring makes it lose it's temper and become brittle....plus you'll end up riding around on your bump stops.....doesn't do much for handling!!!

      What Drew says is true. Also scary is the 3.5" sidewall. Not enough cushion to protect the rim.

      Hit a major pothole, the suspension will hit the bottom stops, the rim will get dented and the headers will probably hit the ground.

      If you want to get the car that low, it's probably airbag time.

      Fortunately I live in N. Florida and we are fortunate with decent roads. I have ordered 2" lowered springs and plan on putting them in next week. I actually have 215/40/17s that I am putting on Friday. Going to keep the 275/40-17s on the rear and plan on rolling the fender and having my rear leafs dearched to do it right. I need to redo the front end totally with new bushings etc, but I want to wait till winter.

      heating steel won't make it harder unless it's quenched afterwards. Letting it air-cool would actually make it too soft. The springs would most likely now yield at much lower stress point, permanently deform a little after every bump, and by the time you get home you will have a VERY low stance. Or, possibly, you could overloard the now-softened spring and break it. But, it's not "brittleness". Sorry for nitpicking.
      If you dunked them in water after you heated them, then that's another story. Rapid quenching makes steel very hard, but also very brittle.
      Either way: Bad idea. Safety first. A low ride isn't so nice when it's wrapped around a sign post.

      Well I put the 215/40/17s on they dont rub but they look stupid. rubber band tires, and my car doesnt sit that low. I guess I wasted the 200.00 for those tires now I need to order 245/45/17s I seen them on several cars at the show and I think they will work perfect.

      Here they are 245/45/17s

      Here is the car with the 245/45/17s on the front, and 275/40/17s on the rear. I want the rear a little lower, need to have my springs dearched, and I am trying to find someone local to do it for me.

      That is the height I want, but I need to put the other 2 springs that I pulled out back on, so I will still need to have them de-arched to achieve this stance and be safe. Thanks for the compliments!!
