Not car related, looking for dog fence ideas

Hey guys. I just got a new house with several acres and need some kind of canine containment unit (fence). Any one use a shock fence? I have a big dog and a little dog so that needs to be taken into account.



I also looked at a house that had a 3 post fense with an almost invisible mesh wiring behind it...thought that looked pretty nice. I can do the work myself, which would make it cheaper. Any recommendations?

I tried the invisible fence and wound up putting up a physical fence. My reason is that on occassion a dog will run through the shock fence if excited and then can't come back. Unless your dog is very docile, I'd recommend a physical barrier.

That's kind of what I am thinking too. My big dog runs like a deer and is pretty stupid. She forgets things, but I think she would remember the fence after a jolt. I just dont want to have to pick her butt up and carry her back across the line.

Get a dog zapper if your dogs are hyper ones.
If you have fairly mellow ones, an invisible fence works great, but like said before, a hyper dog that runs and chases after things alot sometimes goes thru the thing and as it shocks them, they run faster! But, if you take them around the entire perimiter of the yard where the wire is buried and the collar beeps at them, but doesn't shock them, sometimes they will learn that when it beeps, soon after they get zapped! I got a horse zapper for my dogs and it only takes twice for them to not get close to it again!

Along with what has already been mentioned, sometimes a temporary electric fence helps with the training as it is a visual thing that makes a mark in the yard that they seem to understand. I have a friend that has 3 very hyper dogs that have spent the last 3 years inside an electric fence that no longer works. However, you can not drag them across it even now. Just a thought.

I would say a real fence of some sort would be best for you. Keeps things out of your yard also.

If your dog is a chaser then its best for both of you.

The thing with the shock fences is you have to take time to train them, It takes a while even for the smartest of mutts.

I have an white aluminum shadow box style fence to keep my pits in.....works great!

The hard part in all of this is that we dont want to spend 7k for a fence, but we want vinyl instead of wood and we need about 1500 ft of it. $$$$
