Possibly found a way to prime LSx engines!

Was tooling around in the garage and decided to pull the oil pressure sending unit. Noticed it had an NPT fitting and started going through my misc bins. Found a piece of transmission cooler line from a 98 GMC Jimmy that some idiot cut too close to the curve, didn't flare it.. It wasn't smart on his part.. Anyway, it screws right into the sending unit port. Going to get a length of hose, fill it with oil, then pressurize it with an air gun to hopefully force oil to the bearings/lifters before I start my engine. It's been sitting for a long time, want to have a fighting chance getting it going. The engine I'm working on is a 5.3L out of a '02 Tahoe, assuming the other blocks use the same tooling.

Figure you can get a transmission cooler line nipple if you don't have anything like this laying around and do something similar. I thought about using a jar w/ a hose @ the bottom and air fitting on the lid, but for a quick one time use, I'm keeping it low budget..

      Comments? Suggestions?

That will work, or an accusump prefilled with oil, or I bet you could make something like this using a garden sprayer from the hardware store-- http://motiveproducts.3dcartstores.c...ers_p_158.html

I just hope that trans fitting was metric 16mm 1.5 and not NPT.

I'm assuming you are correct. I overlapped the threads on the sending unit / fitting before I ever tried it in the block, they matched up perfectly. You can see how far the fitting is in the block, that was finger tight w/ no tools.

Just found a very inexpensive way to pressurize the block, figured I'd get it out there if someone else was in the same quandary. I'm hoping to get some garage time this weekend, will update on it's usefulness.

If you push oil through the oil pressure port, it will not be filtered before it goes into the bearings.

I haven't used mine yet, but I made one from a garden sprayer from Wal-Mart. I cut end off the hose off and installed a barbed -4 end to -4 AN end. Bought a -6 to M16-1.5 fitting and a reducer -4 to -6 fitting.

      Total cost was about $25.

You're absolutely right, I wouldn't push unfiltered oil through.

Tried and failed last night. Just put somethings together I had laying around in hopes that it would work. New/not used fuel filter, clear hose, and the trans cooler line fitting. I ran engine cleaning brushes / brake cleaner through the assembly before bolting it to the engine. Filled the filter w/ oil using a gear oil bottle top on reg quart of oil, then pressurized it w/ air line to 40 psi. Not enough volume / capacity to get oil forced through everything. Going to give it another go w/ a more purposed filter and bigger oil capacity.
