      Quick Ratio Steering Box???

Want to firm up and quicken the steering on my 72 Chevelle. What is the stock ratio that I have....and more importantly....what should I be looking to upgrade to?

      Thanks

For a nice driver, I use a 14:1 ratio. My wife likes it. For an autocross car I use a 12.7:1 box. She thinks it's too hard to turn...I like it fine. Either will be a huge improvement from the OEM box.

Thanks, Bret! Is it necessary to replace the entire link (rod) and rag joint, as well?

BTW - just watched the Ultimate Street Car Invitational...great job in your 33! That thing is kuh-wick!

I would contact Lee Manufacturing in Sun Valley, Ca. They are the best source. Send them your box and pick your ratio. I did that with mine. Went to a 12:1 ratio. Love it!

On the cheap, get a box out a 92-98 grand Cherokee, 12.7:1 43 deg 45Min You will need to adapt the hoses to AN or Lee sells press in adapters so you can use original hoses, and a rag joint from one of the following.

Will 3rd gen F bodies fit a Chevelle? I'm a big fan of the Iroc box. It's quick ratio, sends less boost to the steering wheel and allows for more road feel. I hear they are very similar in function to the Lee 670. $25 at a salvage yard.

I don't recommend ordering an Iroc box from a parts retailer as I have see the same part numbers for RS as Iroc-z. You'll likely get a regular 3rd gen box that fits Iroc-z and not an Iroc box.

Standard third gens use a 14 to 1 ratio. Z/28's use 12.7 with firm valving but the IROC & TA use 12.7 with extra-firm valving.

Does anyone know of a source to specifically get the IROC/TA box with the firmer valving? I was looking at Rock Auto earlier and it appears they dont specify these boxes seperately.

      I'd like to know too.

The gold standard now is to find a salvage yard with an IROC/GTA in it. Proceed to nab box.

I have this in my car. I think it will work for your application. I needed to do a hybrid rag joint but it worked. the ratio is decent and the feeling is nice. I have this running with a KRC pump, remote reservoir, and a power steering cooler all with braided AN lines and works great.

I just went through this with a buddy. After looking on a couple camaro sites we determined the FE2 firm suspension option was the one to get as it is 2.25 turns lock to lock and should be the firmer input.

When I bought the one for my Nova I was told just to look for one with the raised Z cast on it which can have different guts.

I got a new rag joint and had pure choice make me some lines. For his we found a local parts/hydraulic store that makes custom hoses. This will work out well for his 4 wheel disc conversion as well.

what makes the 12.7:1 harder to turn than the 14:1 ratio? what would be a good ratio for a car that will be used for road racing and reckless driving on public roads?
