      Machining

I just started a machine shop in my shop at home and was curious to how many other people on this board were in the manufacturing etc. profession?

I have a machine shop in my shop too! I used to make a ton of model car parts... Back before i started driving 140 miles a day. Now I just make stuff for the van.
What kind of work are you capable of?

I run a Mazak vertical mill. It comes in pretty handy when making car parts.

I have a small manual machine shop in Norcal. I do maintenance machining and prototype stuff for the music industry primarily. Time to work on cars is pretty hard to come by these days.

We have a large machine shop with several CNC machines, scanners, a dyno room and a chassis dyno, superflo flow bench, metal-working area, and most anything you can imagine. We build engines for Bonneville racers, machine heads for a Pro Stock team, and we manufacture several parts that we sell under the Ravenworks banner plus the Porter Mufflers.

My company name was Machined Aluminum Specialties. I did 1/24th- 1/25th scale static stuff. Wheels, air cleaners, pulley sets, just about anything that could be turned on the lathe. I did a lot of 1/16th scale and some 1/12 and 1/8th custom stuff. I also got heavy into the photo-etched parts and had quite an extensive line of that stuff.

Most of us have used for our kids.also if you pull a lable off of any water bottle and see the glue strips on it we probably made that glue roll and glue scraper for a number of bottlers.it pays me pretty good and the owner lets me make anything for myself as long as its not on his time.works out good.phil.

Cool! A friend of mine took it over. I taught him to run the lathe and he made a go of it for a while but sales have really dropped off. The guys just aren't buying anything anymore...

I worked for Mazak for 20 years, doing turnkey machining packages, field service, and programming training.

After much research, consideration, and experimentation, I have decided that adulthood is not for me. Thank you for the opportunity.

That's too bad, but I haven't really built much in the past couple of years myself. Life has gotten busy with the new kids and full-scale car projects here and there! Here is the last model I completed in 2007, it has a few MAS parts!

You mention working hood hinges. I had a couple of sets done in photo-etch. A street rod style and a Nascar style.
