How To Fuel Tank Setup For LSx

Really up in the air on the power plant that will replace the 350 in my 72 Chevelle. I'm considering an LS engine, but one of my biggest concerns is the electric fuel pump for the tank. From what I see, in-tank fuel pumps are higher than all get out. It looks like I will have to opt for the outside of tank solution, which I'm sure many are doing.

How do I go about doing this? Is there are write-up on this?

If this gets too complicated, I may just opt for the carb setup on the LS. I think it's pretty cool anyway.

      Thanks

For an in tank setup on a budget, the Tanks Inc setup with a stock tank is popular. That will likely be what I go with.

You plan on using your existing tank or one of theirs?

I will be buying a new one. I know that there are ways to improve safety with welding on a used tank, but I can buy a repro tank for less than 200 bucks

I'm going to make your day.
95 Impala/Caprice tank fits the 68-72 A bodies, it's sumped and baffled. The fuel sender works on your existing gauge. All that's needed is the upgraded fuel pump and 02 corvette filter regulator. I've run it on under 2 gallons of gas. Used tank/sender $80
(came with 5 gallons of gas I used in my lawn mower), Racetronix pump (includes improved wire harness) $125, corvette regulator $35.
Do not go external on the A body tank. It's low and wide and will have starvation problems on less than 1/2 tank. Some efi aftermarket tanks have the same problem.

God bless you, sir! Would you mind PMing me a contact number in case I have more specific questions down the road?

This will really help persuade me in the LSx direction. Besides the motor/tranny, this was going to be a pretty hefty expense.

      Thanks again!

I had thought about those tanks too, I think I did the measurements and it was too deep for a second gen F-body, but I had seen people use them for A-bodies. That is a clean install. Do you have any measurements on the tank itself? What about the gas filler? It was in different places on these tanks depending on if it was a Caprice wagon or sedan right? One came out like yours does, the other would go to a filler on the quarter panel.

Yes, you need the one for the sedan. I cut off the original 442 filler neck and connected with a short piece of fuel hos. Filler is behind the license plate.
No dimensions taken. I did trim about 1/4" x 4" of the back of the frame rails to fit it in easier, although others didn't have to. Sorry you f body guys dont have a cheap solution like this.

Hey Gary did you have to do anything to the trunk floor to get the 95 impala/caprice tank to fit?
And is the tank noticeably lighter than a stock one?

The original tank had a depressed section for the outlet. The caprice tank is raised. I cut out a section of my trunk, also makes changing the pump easier. Bot you can buy some rubber coil ring spacers from Autozone that will space down the front edge so you dont have to cut the trunk.
      My trunk pics below.

This is a amazing idea, nice install as well. Do you have any idea if this setup will fit a 73-77 Monte carlo. If it is even close it would be worth trying.

      Thanks, Scotty

I just found a 95 Caprice tank in execelent condition near me for $25.00. Looking to pick it up if someone thinks it will fit.

Thanks in advance, if this works it will be a big money saver.

For 25 bucks, I would give it a roll.

Sounds like a win win to me. If it dose'nt fit I can always make a flower pot out of it.

If possible, get the sender/pump assembly, o ring, straps, and filler neck.
If it doesn't fit, there are a few A body builds started over at LS1tech, I'm sure they could use it.

Gonna have to find me one now, too. I WAS up in the air on a BB454 or a LSx, but I pulled the trigger on a LS3 today through Pace Performance, so I, too, am on the hunt for a Caprice tank.

Thanks for all the pics, Gary!
