Best way to plumb a return line at stock tank?

I'm considering the option of adding a return line to my carbed/mechanical fuel pump '80 Camaro. I want to replace a problematic dead-head regulator with a bypass regualtor. What is the best way to connect the return line at the fuel tank? I don't want to spend a fortune doing this.

I'm planning on running a 3/8" aluminum return line. The tank is currently 1/2 full (I'm an optimist, lol).

Replacing the sender with a return style, welding a bung in it, or using a bulkhead.

Yeah, I guess I could drop the tank and put a bulkhead fitting on my current sending unit to keep things simple & clean.

Do I need to put a length of tubing on the bulkhead connector (inside the tank), or can I just let the connector gush fuel back into the tank?

Opinions vary on that. Mine gushes and hasn't caused me any problems to date. I was told to return my fuel to the top of the tank by Mallory and Aeromotive. This keeps the pump from having to push so hard to return fuel. Some want to return it right to the pickup so it won't starve in corners as the fuel gets low.

I never thought about plumbing the return back into the feed. Seems like its a good idea, an in throry would actually take load off of the pump, since it would be feeding iself in a loop. I would think you'd want an angle'd fitting to keep flow. would this cause a problem with airation? Thats the only thing i could think of.

Shouldnt, any air in the lines gets pumped through the carb/injectors during cranking. Just pure fuel going back baby I have an 89 camaro, and I turned my stock 3/8" feed line into the return line so it drops back in from the top.that is a great idea to tee it back into the feed line with a Y fitting. wonder how plausible that is...

You definitely want it back into the fuel tank and not into the feed line. The fuel needs time to cool.

good point, I suppose thats why its unheard of. my fuel to my engine is returnless just for that reason, fuel flows to my regulator with a bypass back to the tank, and the rest of the fuel is on a one way trip to the engine with no return.

Thanks guys. I picked up a bulkhead connector for a fuel cell that I'll place in the top of my sending unit. I'll connect that to a short length of braided line that I'll run between the sending unit and the hard return line.

Here is the finished product - it's a tight fit, but it clears and doesn't pinch the fuel return line when I put the tank back in... I didn't have to massage the trunk floor to clear the fittings on top.

I cut my stock a-body tank and added a summit racing sump. An10 to filter then pump then up to return fpr. Back an8 to hard line to a bung welded to the front pax side of my stock tank near the vent. I capped the original feed barb on the tank. The sump allows for a second feed line as well. Pics to follow.
