      Truck = ProTouring??

well...the time has come...after owning a monte carlo since I was 18...I have decided to get rid of it (or at least put her in storage) at the end of this season.

I plan on buying an 80's era chevy truck....could this be made into a pro touring vehicle? If you all have any pics...bring em on!!!!!

Some members say that its not classified as pro-touring but I dont think I agree with that at all. But I do not intend of starting any argument. I say make it if you want and most of us will enjoy it.

I am from the "Dare to be Different" crowd myself. My Astro is probably as far out there as you can get and my truck has surprised a few hardcore 'Vette guys as to how well it handles... I say build it as you see fit... Call it what you want. It's your vehicle...

80's chevy trucks were pretty much the same as the 70's.
74-87 was one generation the subrubans and blazer of that gen lasted till around 91

I think even if it wasn't technically or commonly classified as "pro-touring" it would and very much could be just as badass. Imagine a sleek and smoothed truck lowered just over say 19 or 20" TT2's or better yet a set of 19/20" Billet Rally wheels, big brakes, upgraded suspension, late model force fed engine, billet grill, shaved, body colored toneau cover, bumble bee stripe, roll pan...I could just keep going. I think it's a DAMN good idea seeing as how I've always liked the body style and "would if I could". Too many ideas, not enough money. Go for it man. Please.

Wasn't somebody doing something similar to this? Basically I just remember alot of suspension shots. Think the truck was grey in color.

Do a search, this topic on trucks being pro-touring has already been discussed.

Personally, I don't think trucks can be classified as pro-touring. There have already been hundreds of lowered trucks with awesome suspensions, brakes, and power under the hood before, they are called "Sport Trucks". Look back at the factory ones like the Syclone and Typhoon for examples. The upcoming Trailblazer SS AWD will be another. Sport Trucks have been popular far longer than pro-touring cars.

Calling the GMC Syclone and Typhoon a "sport truck" is no different that calling a Camaro a "sports car". They scooted like mad and handled quit well! I don't see any reason a truck couldn't be classified as PT. I don't doubt that there are some trucks out there that would out handle some of the cars on this site. When you modify a Camaro it becomes PT.... so why would a truck when modified in the same way be called anything different?
If you have a car and truck that can pull .90g's on the skidpad, brake 60-0 in 120ft and run the 1/4 in the 13's what's the difference? The only difference is one is shaped like a brick... but that's where it ends.

very well put BuddyP, personally when i think sport truck I think street only. these are the rides that never see any real track time. When Black Sunshine is finally finished (and God willing it will happen before 2025 ) i plan on running it at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, if only to see what I've accomplished...sure hope I break 14's

I have always loved trucks. I have gone through a few myself, except most of them were '91-'93 454SS. I have had about 10 in the last 8 years. I currently have a '91 454SS with 2300 original miles on it and it's all stock so far.. You can make a truck really look good and handle pretty well. Here are a couple I have built in the past few years. The red one was my fastest, 12.50@117 on street tires! I sold it to a friend of mine here in town, so I still get to drive it all the time..

I disagree. I don't call my late model Camaros "pro-touring", even though they do the exact same thing you describe for that truck example. Sport trucks were being built far earlier than the phrase "pro-touring" was even an idea. Why would you classify them into some new genre just because its the latest hyped up description?

I feel that "pro-touring" should be reserved for converting classic cars and half cars (for the 'camino guys) into late model performing and comfortable vehicles. We shouldn't allow this classification to get so mainstream that we are now calling trucks, bikes, boats, go-karts, dune buggies, and skateboards "pro-touring".

My sport truck buddies would be pissed if I called their nice rigs "pro-touring". They know that sport trucks have been around longer.

I wouldn't call late model Camaro's PT either unless Suspension, Brakes and motor have been enhanced in a track performing matter... same with trucks. Forum member "MyClone" may have a view on this as well (since he has a Syclone with perf. upgrades in all those areas). I would never call something the way it came from factory PT. If you build a truck with track racing in mind why can't you call it PT if a car built the same way can?

Not that any of this really matters anyway. It's all just opinions. Build what you like, call it what you want!

I dunno really... The term "sport truck" in the circles I am known to hang out in generally means a later model truck thats been lowered for appearances only, neon light tubes mounted under it, chrome/"billet" EVERYWHERE, stock or close to it drive line, and a big sound system that sounds like a bunch of people beating on a rubber raft with the ores. "Bolt on queens" are what I call em.

However, I do kinda agree that "Pro Touring" is reserved for classic iron that has been modded with killer suspension, brakes, updated power train, and some creature comforts (HVAC, PS, PB, etc) to make the car WAY better than it was when it rolled off the show room floor.

IMO its all in what you perceive as "Pro Touring" I guess and a classic truck could be considered PT if its not just lowered with bolt on parts to look low and there is a purpose to it being lowered. Later model trucks that have been given the PT going through are on the outer fringes of things much like the syclone/typhoon in that they prolly arent exactly what ppl have in mind when you say "Pro Touring" but they arent really poser "sport trucks" either.

Other than that no matter what you call it if youre building it like YOU want it then call it what you want until someone else starts paying for it then you can build it the way they want and call it what they want.
