Hey guys I need help I was wondering if anyone knew what's the biggest size rim and tire I can fit on front/rear for a 68 Chevelle without mini tubs or notching the frame. I want to go 18x8 245 up front and 19x10 rear possibly 295 would this be possible with decent spacing left please help need to make a decision ASAP whether to add mini tubs or notch the frame

I have 255/50/17 on the front and 275/50/17 on the rear of my 68, I cannot for the life of my tell you the backspacing or rim width. My car is lowered almost 4" in the front and 3" in the rear and I get slight rub at full lock in the front and I had to pull one of the top inner fender bolts out to stop them from hitting. The back, I have plenty of room, could probably put a 295 in the back with careful measuring. I do hear some rubbing in the back on hard high speed cornering. I think they are hitting the exhaust pipes, I do need to investigate. I would like to go to a shorter tire front and rear with a little smaller sidewall. Probably going to stay with the same 255 and 275 and go to a 40 series instead.

You'd think being a photographer I'd have a lot of good shots of my car, think again, lol...

Here's a cellphone shot that's decent enough to see...

I have 255's on the front and 285's out back on my 70 Lemans and I've had no issues with rubbing. Thier on 17"x9" rims with 5" bs.

I've seen a couple people running 275's on the front of 68-72 A-bodies. I'm not sure how much rubbing they had to deal with but I know for a fact that atleast one of them had no modifcations done to inner wheel well nor the frame. And 295's out back shouldn't be a huge deal. When I check to make sure the 285' on my car would fit I saw that I had a good amount of room to go bigger.

How much and if you have the car lowered plus the aspect ratio of the tire is going to have a huge impact on what will fit also.

I'm planning to replace my wheels & tires, not 100% sure with what yet. My Nittos are 9 years old and getting very hard, I dread getting caught in the rain.

Those sizes should fit your car without a problem. Most GM A bodies '68-72 don't have a problem with rear wheel width until you get to "11 as long as the backspacing is correct. 295 will usually be the limit on tires size before rolling the lip needs to be done in most cases. If you are going to get a 2piece wheel you won't have a problem. Most cast wheels come in sizes (diameter/backspacing)that are the most common so that is where your problem could creep in.
      Big dreams, small pockets....

I have a 67 with 10 inch rear rims, but I don't think you can stuff that big of a wheel in your 68.
