I have owned 4 fox bodies, I dont currently own one. The fox body is more desirable then a thrid gen camaro. The ones I owned didn't rattle like my camaro's did, They are easier to work on, There is more aftermarket parts for them, and most parts are cheaper, There is room for dual 3 inch exhaust, more bang for the buck with the mustang, Better rear ends, Dont have to search forever to find one with a manuel transmission, or a convertible, There was a lot more options when buying a fox body, The lx coupe, lx hatchback, lx convertible, gt convertible, GT, all of which you could get with a auto or stick, the 93 cobra, 93 cobra R, the saleen mustang, The svo tubo 4cyl's and the slow 4cyl cars, There was also t-top cars, Its a better candidate for engine swaps, Didnt the camaro have problems with the back glass breaking? Mine leaked water all the time, There was talk about Dynacorn building a fox body a few years ago.
You make a couple valid points. However you just can't overcome the homely looks of a fox body. No matter what's done to them they still look like a boxy tin can. I have seen very few fox body cars that look really well done. Most of them around these parts have ls motors in them and are straight line only cars. I will agree with the fact that they came with better rears. The 3rd gen Camaro was a exceptional handling car for its day. As for faster, yeah if you use the 305, which was not a performer at all. However the 350 cars with an auto walked a 5.0 down the track. The fox body cars had a significant weight advantage as well. I just can't get over the fuglyness of them.

      In another 10 years , the C5 and C6 Corvette .
They will be dirt cheap .
The platform , powertrain and suspension are simple and easy to maintain ...
There is a ton of aftermarket supporrt for them .
They are a proven performer .
( Did I say they will be dirt cheap in 10 years ? )

If Dynacorn reproducing bodies because of enthusiast deamand is any indicattion of the next hot thing, first generation Broncos are where its at. That is the next model they are repopping. Even ahead of iconic muscle era cars like '69 Chargers and 70 Cudas.

This conversation has some odd points. No, fox Mustangs are not ugly, and it would be hard to make the boxy argument as a 3rd gen owner. No, fox Mustangs are not easy to work on if you're doing anything near the firewall or dash. Heater core access? Terrible. Replace a starter? Stupid special curved wrench. Access to the clutch quadrant? Contortionist time. Getting to the rear spark plugs? Not easy like the your typical large engine bay V8 car. At the same time, it seems like 3rd gens use a lot of odd torx and allen screws where they could have just used a phillips head or a hex bolt.

Yea, the 350 engine in the Iroc Z was a neat option if you were someone who aspired to own a performance car with an automatic transmission.

In the case of the 3rd gen and fox, I much prefer the Ford drivetrain, even down to the 4 lug rear end. Mustangs had power and (less) weight, but the Camaros could stuff a lot more tire and came with superior torsional rigidity (a big part of why they were heavier.) Some of the Mustang's handling limitations are a non-issue in race car form thanks to roll cages (stiffness) and fender flares (tire width.)

Each platform has advantages depending on what variety of tasks its being built and used for. Strangely, for what I use my own Mustang for, I probably would have been better off getting a 3rd gen, but when shopping just couldn't bring myself to get an automatic or a 305. If I did get the 3rd gen, I would likely not have been able to do a mild build exclusively with aftermarket parts found on craigslist.

It will be interesting to see how these cars enter the collector car market.
