SBC crank bolt stripped

So it looks like the crank snout threads are stripped on my gen 1 sbc. Any ideas how bad this is? I had pulled the timing chain cover to check the chain alignment, which turned out to be fine. The engine is in the car, which is going to make things a bit more challenging.

I feel your pain. I have done this also. I think the crank bolt is 3/8 20. You can fix this with a heli coil thread repair insert. Supposedly they are stronger then your original threads. You can try and fix the the stock size or go up to 7/16. What ever bolt you use make sure you can a harmonic balancer installer with those threads. When you are putting the balancer back on heat it up in the oven on 200 degrees for about 15 minutes. It will make installation easier and put less stress on your newly repaired threads.

Hmm, I will have to look into a HeliCoil. I think I actually stripped it ages ago when I put on the harmonic balancer using just the bolt.

That will teach me.

Also, was your crank in engine, in the car? Just wondering how difficult it will be to drill it out straight and install it in the car.

Guess I will be pulling the radiator at least.
