      stripping car in primer

how do you guys suggest i strip my 67 mustang? the previous owner did a quickie bondo job and sprayed some primer on everything. the car sat outside for a long time and now the primer is cracking and coming off. the body is pretty straight. do you suggest i trust the body work underneath or take is all down to metal and start again? i will soon pick up a devilbiss hvlp gun and some SPI primer as suggested by many on the forums.

since it isnt paint aircraft stripper will most likely be really messy right? should i just DA the whole thing with 80 grit or can i use a wire wheel cup brush?

Soda blast is the best way but cost a pretty penny. a Chemical stripper works well but can be hard on the environment ( I prefer this way and use http://www.kbs-coatings.com/kbs-strip.html Since it works so fast and is thin and can be put on with a simple sprayer). Sanding is always going to work but is messy and paper get costly as well plus it take a while and is hard on your lungs if your don't wear a mask

If you wanna blast it, bad boys blaster makes a 125lb soda blaster for $300 I am ordering one on Monday, and you can blast all other medias as well with it. Only thing is you need a pretty big compressor to keep up with it. http://www.badboyblasters.com/id115.html

definitely take it to bare metal...while its at this stage....because if you go off what he done you could really regret it after spending all that $$ on paint then couple years down road you start having problems...i wouldnt risk it... hey buckeye thanks for the tip on that stripper might have to check that out myself..

I use 3m paint stripper wheels, they are 9 bucks a piece and you run em on a drill. They keep the piece cool so no warping. Just do it outside if possible because it will make a lot of dust. Also wear a respirator

      stripping car in primer

I remember using those black fiber disks when i was stripping the roof of my 69 camaro. Thise things shred like crazy. Ill have to see how thick the primer is on my car. After i patched the door i found blue paint and the factory red oxide primer. Im pretty sure there is two paint jobs under this thing. Lucky me. Lol

Those? Weird that they shredded on you. I only went thru 3 of them to completely strip the quarters, doors and roof on my charger.

Strip it.....I just did my 69 Camaro, a little mess but not bad. Also look at "Captain Lee's Spra' Stripper" stuff works awesome, spray on and use a scotch brite, not much scraping at all. Sorry I don't have a link, but if you google it you'll find it.

I'd strip it with a DA, or have it media blasted. but NOT soda blasted.
You could contact barry from spi or give me a ring to go over the issues of soda blasting.
It can be done but just make sure you know the procedures for neutralizing.

But with all the other medias available I dont' know why you would want to use soda anyways.

What issues do you have with soda blasting? I've been soda blasting my customers cars since 2004 with zero failure. SoCal Speed Shop soda blast the cars they build and it works for them.

I've used the fiber stripping discs for years. Best bang for your buck. 4 or 5 bucks each at Harbor Freight. I think 2 or 3 would probably get the car down to bare metal. Mount them on an angle grinder and they are fast and leave a surface "almost" ready for primer.
This is the van frame after about an hour with a stripping disc...

I would do the body worked areas first, get those redone and ready to go and then do the car panel by panel. Only do as much as you know you will get primer on.

Stripe it with a da and some 80 grit less damage to metal , primer removes fast and easy, take it to the metal , primer should never sit in weather it has no protection from the elements . We did a survey several years ago when i worked for Akzo auto refinish paint rep here in mid mississippi when you stripe a car to metal and leave sitting in the open air in a body shop 4 hors rust was forming so remember use a good epoxy or etching primer and resand just prior to priming a good precleaner and avoid touching bare metal your hands has contaimating oil sweat etc that can cause rust even if you cant see it now could show up months down the road . I see so many paint failures today because of prep or lack of .

I’m about ready to start stripping my car. i need a decent primer gun. What do you guys recommend? harbor freight? devilbiss starting line? eastwood evolution? i would like to stay in the $100 range if i could. Also what size tips? 1.8 or 2.0 for primers.

Also living in California can i still get a good epoxy primer? i was going to order some eastwood but they won’t ship it to me. I'm X-ed out from summit as well. I have a paint jobber near my dads house but I haven’t been in there yet to check anything out.

If I were you I'd use a stripper pad with "fingers" on it. Takes paint/bondo down fast, but wont dig into the metal. Then once its bare, blow the car off, inside and out. dont forget under wheel wells and jambs. Wipe the whole thing down with wax and grease remover or thinner if you have extra. Get a good epoxy primer and then your set. I spray primer out of a $25 harbor frieght gun. Works just as well as my sata 3000. Dust the first coat on then add 2 or 3 medium coats. I usually start with jambs and hard to reach places first then fill in the open spaces. Remember adding another coat is easily sanding out runs sucks! Any other questions feel free to ask. I

well i did some more digging and looks like SPI can ship to california. their epoxy meets the 2.1 voc standards. Most say it sprays well out of a 1.4 or 1.5 tip.

i just dont want to start stripping my car to metal without a way to protect it afterward.

If you decide to strip it to bar metal I would high suggest you put on a light coat of self-etching primer first. it bites into the metal and has excellent corrosion resistance.

I think SPI recommends against using their epoxy over etch primers. Check with them before you do this.
