GMR - Big Bearing Ford Ends

Introducing the New GMR Semi-Floater (flanged axle) Big Bearing Ford Ends. Just like everything here at the GMR we simply Cant Leave things alone…. in other words… Good is just not Good Enough! With that in mind we have redesigned the Big Bearing Ford End to the new standard, The GMR Standard! The overall concept it simple, reduce deflection in the assembly to help combat the common issues of “piston knock back”. What we have done is drastically increase the strength and consistency of the Big Bearing Ford End.

When it comes to Flange axles the Timken “set-20″ bearing is the high performance standard so we designed the GMR BBF ends to specifically cater to that bearing. All the major axle manufactures do offer these bearings as an upgrade so regardless of your axle manufacture, the GMR BBF ends will work. One major concern we found was the drastic slop or “play” with the “set-20″ and traditional BBF ends. With this in mind we went to the drawing board and changed things up from the “norm”. The result was Two major elements, first we provided the back of the bearing a better more precise lip to rest against inside the bearing end. This provides a very flat and consistent backing for the outside bearing race. Second and most important was the actual machine tolerance of the bearing race ID location. We specifically machine our bearing race surface four thousands of an inch tighter then the standard for the competition, drastically improving the fitment of the “set-20″ bearing in the GMR BBF end.

Another battle with the traditional BBF end is the deflection and distortion that occurs from the welding process of the End to the housing. The GMR has significantly reduced the risk of distortion by not only moving the welding surface back from the bearing surface but also by increasing the Mass of the component. Designed to provide the proper amount of mass so that the heat required to weld the end to the housing will not affect the bearing surface. These units will fit bothe 3 inch and 3.25 inch housings accordingly.

Machined from billet high grade steel it is clear to see the difference when compared to the traditional competitors units. This view also gives you a really good comparison of the additional “girth” in the GMR unit where it counts, the weld surface area!

Along with the many other improvements we also precision surfaced the flange face while making it thicker where needed. These flange faces are far straighter and stronger then the traditional competitions units.

With such precision we felt that going with standard “T” bolts was inappropriate so we opted for precision shoulder bolts with 1/2″ shank and 3/8 locking nuts. Designed to work with all major brake manufactures bolt on kits with adapter plate thicknesses from 0.230 to 0.315 in thickness (Wilwood and Baer). With this we opted for the larger bolt patter of the traditional 1/2″ bolt style ford Ends again working with off the shelf Wilwood and Baer components.

GMR BBF Bolt Pattern - (2-3/8”tall x 3-1/2”wide) We choose this taller bolt pattern which cuts down on caliper bracket deflection due to the broader attachment point of the backing plate.
Each Kit includes Two Housing ends and hardware packs, perfect amount for one rear end.

Has anyone put these to use yet with fixed calipers?

      Hello Traven,

Yes we have sold multiple sets through our online store. As to the exact application they were going to be used for I am not sure, however I would assume most will be put to use along with a fixed caliper. These GMR Ends are no doubt the highest quality on the market and will help your flanged axle setup in more than one way. Hope this helps?

I want your full floater setup for my 67 but I want to use regular 9 inch ends on my 89. I'll definitely order a set of these.

Have you ever wondered how to properly install Big Bearing Ford ends, The GMR way? With the use of precision fixturing and professional welding techniques, when you have The GMR install your BBF ends you know its going to be perfect! We start the process with our Big Bearing Ford ends, precision machined for superior tolerances and quality.

The GMR exclusively only uses and suggests our BBF ends, for more information please click here!

The process Starts with Trimming the housing to the required width, using the GMR Big Bearing Ford Rear End Order form the rear end is cut for your specific length. Once we cut the housing the end is then ground to create a perfect bevel for welding.

After the housing is prepped we assemble / install the GMR9-TX system with our GMR Big Bearing Ford ends. With precision machined tooling the GMR installs your Big Bearing Ford ends in a fashion that ensures perfect alignment with the internal gear set!

After the GMR9-TX system is in place we set the rear end to the desired pinion angle then tighten down the GMR9-TX Stand to hold everything in place. With the pinion in the desired location and locked down we then move onto the Big Bearing Ford ends. The GMR9-TX system is designed with a precision machined “shelf” on the fixture block that makes setting the ends easy and precise. The digital level seen below is accurate to .1 of a degree, jut for reference.

Once we have the desired clocking for the ends we then tack weld each side in place. GMR suggests and prefers to place tack welds every inch around the entire end prior to welding. Once both sides are tack welded in place GMR then professionally TIG welds the ends in place with high quality welding rod, you will not see cheap ER70s here!

Once cooled your ready to install axles, brakes, and go have fun!

      Jay,
I do believe I need this done as I've already went through a set of bearings at 1000 miles...I do believe this is the answer I've been looking for-Where can I get this professionally done by you?

      Thanks,
      Josh
