fuel / temp gauge calibration req'd?
Hi all and anyone who has an idea,
I just fininshed putting a new fuel tank / sending unit in my '69 camaro along with a new temp sending unit.
Problem: my fuel gauge and temp gauges (console) are totally out of whack. Bogus readings. My grounds are good and gauges are new.
Do I need to calibrate them? If so, how? I think my car uses a balanced coil type of fuel gauge.
ThanksMike

did you get the right ohm sending unit for the fuel tank? I think stock gauges on gm vehicles are 5 to 90 im not sure on the aftermarket but i know they can be different. sometimes they offer 2 different gauges so you can match them to your sending unit.

GM ohm range is 0-90, and Chrysler and Ford are not the same. Check into that.
As for the temp gauge, are you sure you have all the air out of the system? It's possible for it to read way too high if it's sitting in a pocket of air.
Is the cappilary (sp) tube for the temp gauge kinked? That ruins them.
Where do you have the temp sender in the system?-Matt

Thanks
I checked the sender before install to be sure the resistor was working. I put it on a 0-1000 ohm scale and the deflection was small. It was probably about 0- 100 ohms. Since I have a spare unit, I'll check to be sure.
As far as the temp sender, it's installed in the cylinder head and it's a thermistor type unit. Since I just reinstalled the engine, it might be an air pocket like you mentioned.Mike

I measured the resistor in the sending unit
0-90 ohms exactly
Any ideas what the problem could be?Mike

07-21-2005 #6You never explained what it's doing.
Did you make sure you have the correct gauge?-Matt

The tank is reading half full when I only have 4 gallons in it.
Yes, I have the stock balanced coil fuel gauge.
ThanksMike
