I checked the sender before install to be sure the resistor was working. I put it on a 0-1000 ohm scale and the deflection was small. It was probably about 0- 100 ohms. Since I have a spare unit, I'll check to be sure.

As far as the temp sender, it's installed in the cylinder head and it's a thermistor type unit. Since I just reinstalled the engine, it might be an air pocket like you mentioned.
