Is it necessary to drain the oil and trans fluid when pulling an engine and trans?

I wouldn't worry about the oil, but definitely the trans especially if its an auto. Still seams weird to me that there aren't cheap plastic caps you can buy that would seal the output shaft once you pull a driveline...

There are caps for the tranny, there was one on mine when I bought it.

I usually use a latex glove to seal the tailshaft in a pinch- it will usually last about a day. (you could always use that condom in your wallet too)

Trans caps are nice but if they get knocked off on accident by possibly rubbing them against the core support, well then you have a mess. drain it and be doen with it then you have no worries. The engine oil can be done later.

It takes less time to drain the fluids then it takes to clean up a spill.
