      Pro-Touring Electric Car

I decided to turn my 78 THUNDERBIRD in to a Pro-Touring Electric Time Attack car . The engine is gone , the battery tray is being made on Monday . A VW is all ready doing 9 sec 1/4 miles and Camero is doing 10 sec 1/4 miles and is planing on doing some top speed runs . Not to mention the Tesla and the Ellica . I was gonna do the Big Block thing , but weight an classing of my car would be hard and it may not give me the backing and class wins if I do well or not . I'm gonna do a showoff type set up to get the bugs out and then start going whole sale on the power . Is any one here ever planed on doing a electric car ? And just so the fact is out there , I'm doing this just to go fast . 2,500Lbs Tq , an 12,000rpm motors and full to half torque at 0 RPM's .

When you get in my car, you realize ...... Monsters are real !!!

Never planned on it, but if I were going to build one (especially one for autoX/ time attack only) I'd start by taking advantage of what you DON'T need. Like a driveshaft tunnel. Couple the motor directly to an IRS setup, build a perimeter frame and totally flat floor. Then put most of the batteries in the rear seat / passenger seat area, right on the floor plates. With the 78 Bird you have a pretty good (if big) start as I believe it was still the Granada platform and has the MII front end. Much better than the strut setup on the later Birds...

You want to place the weight as low as possible in the car, and keep it between the axles. Nothing out back, nothing out front.

So far far that's close on the mark with me , but I was gonna do a 50/50 split with the battery's up front and twin motors out back like you said . But that is only after I work out the bugs and get the two 350 Hp motors I want . The car just was to last 5 laps at top speed at a 3 to 5 mile road course and I might be fine for most tracks . The 78 THUNDERBIRD is body on frame like the Grand Torino , but I will be putting in IRS later after I find motors putting out the power I need . I'v talked to some one about putting holes in the frame to get the weight down . Maybe the roll cage will not bring the weight back up .

ahhh haaaaaa you beat me to it. watching closely to your build. I had a plan 6 years ago but I'd figured I'd wait till they come up with a reliable battery. I'll get it going soon. I need space.

Also fix that "CAMERO" please before that Mary gal's head explodes. LOL

      what battery?

Getting the trays done as low as I need and want , has kept me up when I had the time . I'll post picks of the trays as soon as they are welded up . I'm going with lead acid battery's .They are cheap and can take a beating .

I got the parts in the way I wanted and it works , the brakes and light , the tray's work perfect and the motor turns the way it should . But the controller does not work and or my batteries may be dead and or not the power for the controller , I have no charger yet so I'm S.O.L. .(side note ) For people that want electric cars , they don't help very much .
Well , it's time to send it to the shop for body work like I all ready planed for Auguast . I'll try to get more pictures . The grey battery fell on the camera , so give me time . I think the motor mount I made for the motor is really good and so does most people that see it . Well , more baby steps to come .
