      painting a ididit steering column

I just got my steering column with push button start from MCB in Dublin. It's the paintable steel column and it came with some kind of oily / greasy (i have been told that it maybe wd40) covering, does anybody know what I should use to remove this so that I can paint to column?

Brake clean and a rag will get most any oil based substance off and it won't leave a residue

Some wax and grease remover than I would scuff it with a grey or red scuff pad.
