      About big red

Is it true that big red is the first pro-touring car.

Not the first, but definately one of the first cars of its type that made such a big impression.Car and driver built a grand touring 69 camaro in the 70s.The cannonball challenger. I also remember an article called corner carvers in hr with some sick roadrace/street cars in it, early eighties or so. Ron scranton and Freeland tanner also built sick 69 camaros and were featured in an article called whine country.Dont ask how I remember all this.

"first" is always hard to nail down, but certainly it was the first influential car that shaped PT as we
      know it today.

as for "first", I would argue that that 65 & 66 GT350's, Boss 302s, Z/28s, etc. were the first PT cars.

I think Big Red is more of a Street Fighter.

BIG RED is not PT, it is a race car. It is the styling of BIG RED that has been influential in the PT style. There was a white 69 with black BBS style wheels in the mid eighties before BIG RED. The owner's name was Alex something. It was considered a 10 ten car at the time. I don't know if it was the first, but one of the earliest I can remember.

LOL- I thought it was a purpose built racecar with tags. Didn't it win the 0-100-0 deal lately? Definately a hardcore build.

Not the first I am sure. Not "pro Touring" (as we know it) either. I will say that Big Red is to Pro Touring as Marlyin Monroe is to sexy women. Definately not the first, but VERY influential!! :icon996:

Frank. Lets just call big red a nascarframed/classicbodied/bigmotored/grandtouring/openroad/streetcar/showcar, you know, just to keep it simple.

      how about "the red cyclone"

Just kidding. On a serious note , I remember worshipping that car when all my friend didnt get it.

Official 0-100-0 record holder is the Ultima GTR with a 640 hp SBC.

Get the August issue of Hot Rod magazine which tells of the early 50's La Carrera Panamericana. Straight roads, windy roads, elevation changes, bad food and a little spontaneous off roading--all across more than 2000 miles.
If that ain't early Pro-Touring? I don't know what is

      Freeland Tanner

      Gentlemen,

I believe that I have the 1969 Camaro that Freeland Tanner & Ron Scranton built in late 79 or early 80's. It has a 435 hp 427 ci engine with a 400 turbo with a TON of modifications.

The lacquer paint is shot but, it has set inside all it life & the interior is perfect. I have a few pictures of the car but, I would like to find somebody else that remembers the car or I would like to get in touch with Freeland himself. Our plan is to paint the car back just like it was.

If anyones interested I will put some pictures of the car out here.

      Thanks,
      Moses

      Trouble maker! lol

Hard to call big-red a PT car since it's so close to a race car, but I suppose it fits the definition.

      How about Pro-Badassssss

I remember the corner carvers and the whine country articles too!!!! That red Camaro with the flares made me want to go to extremes to figure out how to do all metal flares on my Camaro. I had the best cornering Camaro in town at the time and a few Vette drivers just couldn't understand how until I told them I had $880 worth of Comp T/A's on all 4 corners and if they wanted to keep up they better buy better tires. 2yrs of setup on the suspension didn't hurt either along with a lot of wheel time everyday driving it back and forth to work on different roads everyday.
Cars like Pro-Touring have been around for many years, it all just depends on how you look at it, along with how old you are

The dream of my car has been around in my mind for a long time and it just happens that the new parts make it a lot more modern and lot cooler along with being safer.
