Steve, Supershops is who I was referring to! It was great to walk into a store and actually see high performance goodies on the wall.

Actually... Local Speed Shops have been disappearing from the face of the planet because of places like Summit Racing. They have been undercutting prices (and offering almost non-existent customer service or technical help), so the small guys can't compete. About 15% of the hot rodding population cares enough about supporting their local speed shop and their local economy. The rest of the hot rodders are just trying to save a buck (which is understandable).

Sure! Summit is making hot rodding somewhat affordable, but at the same time they are killing the "Speed Shop."

Save Americana! Support your local Speed Shop, Mom&Pop hardware store and drive-in theatre...before they are all gone.

      Getting off my soapbox...

      Jon,

      Congratulations on your new job!

AMEN BROTHER......... actually all the "local" speed shops are gone from my area...overrun by the chain stores filled with blundering idiots behind the counters, and the prices are absolutley mind boggling now that the local guys are out of the picture. sure they move in and start out with great prices.... then when to "competition" is gone, and they can monopolize the market.....the prices skyrocket.

i will vent a lil on what really gets me goin.... when you go in looking for the special hi-po part........ you walk in with part# in hand, and the numbnutts behind the computer looks at you like your a f@#$ing retard because you dont want the made in china factory replacement part they have on the shelf. then after calling to see if "the warehouse" has it.... you find out it is 3 times higher than the price through summit or jegs.... and is out a minimum of 7-10 working days. i often point out that i could have a penguin shipped by fed-ex from antartica to my door in less that 24 hours if i wanted....and almost nothin takes 7-10 days to ship, especially from the warehouse 3 hours away.

im sure this story is the same for lots of places around the country, and the only way this is gonna change is if everybody starts supporting the little guys. even if it means spending a few more dollars, i would gladly go to a local speed shop..... and talk to somebody who actually has a clue about the parts they are selling.

      btw...congrats on the new job.

And if the computer doesn't show it, it doesn't exist. They want to know year, make, model of car. That's fine if it's relevent, but I want a part for an aftermarket carb on a NOM. They dont have a clue!

LOL guys, it is good to know that we do not have the corner on the market here in Tennessee with the bumbling idiot thing. I HATE to go into the local "parts" store and deal with someone that drove to work in a 82 Dodge Omni with a save-a-spare on each end. Clueless is being nice. They would not know what a thermo-limiting switch was if it hit them in the forehead.
Fortunately, we still have a speed shop in Knoxville called Performance Products. This company used to travel the car show circuit but no longer do that. They still do not have computers on the counter and handwrite tickets. They are higher than Summit but will match them if you ask. Plus you can go home with the part right now most of the time.
Congrats on the new job Jon and just so you know, Phillip owned the last true speed shop in Macon. It is a shame you can not get him over there with you, he still knew how to make something work without a computer telling him too.

for all the holdouts still out there.

LOL. There is an AutoZone commercial with a jingle and they display a picture of the type of part they list in the jingle. What always gets me is that the very first item they say is Tailgate but it is a door!

Steve, i remeber Stupid Shop (err, SuperShop). Even they were idiots. Good deals on BFGs. That was about all I was impressed with. Iused to drive to North Hollywood or Chatsworth to the PAW. Now They are Home Mechanics? I go Summit. Whenever possible I go to Blairs Speed shop here in Pasadena. Support the little guy!

ageed summit and such are running the speedshops out of business, but i have had nothing but bad experiences with speedshops, always some cocky know it all type behind the counter, and they never have what you need in stock, only intake manifolds and guages, and the prices seem like such a rip off(i know how it works, have to order a lot etc...) Also they never want to return anything. SUmmit has absouletly the best customer service i have ever seen, and some of the guys on the phone know what they are talking about, and will look up info for you in their catalogs even if you aren't buying anything 24-7

My Customer Service experiences with Summit have been great. I get everything in the amount of time or less than they say it will take, shipping is cheap and the guys sound knowledgable and helpful.
