Are you going to be controlling the trans with a factory computer, or a standalone type? I'm pretty sure the LT1 trans is different wiring wise. What part of the country are you in?

I believe you'll be alright with anything 99 or newer 4L60e or 65. Not many changes between the years. You don't have to have an LS1 car trans. You can certainly use any of the truck or vans trans as well. If you have the stock ecu it will control the trans no tcu needed.

If you are going to run DBW, you must have the correct TAC module and corresponding pedal too.

Try to stick with a 4L60/65E from a truck and you'll be fine. Years would be from 99 up to at least 2006 but then you have to watch out for the 4L70E's from 2006 on. They have an input speed sensor that the 60/65 didn't so it would cause you a lot of grief to get an ecu and wiring that would control the 70. If you need pics to help you figure out which is which I can send you some just pm me. We put pics of each in our catalogs to help people figure out which is which.

Where can I find a wiring diagram so I know which pins from the engine controller go to the trans? I am pulling out an th400 and trying to decide whether to go with a 4l60/700r4 or a 4l60e. I am basically looking for the easiest way to go. It sounds like they are pretty similar, but the older doesn't need the controller.

It depends upon what you consider as easiest. From a standpoint of putting a trans in without having to wire anything up then yes the 700R4 is easier to install. The drawback of that trans is that it's much harder to adjust shift pressure, shift points, and torque converter lockup. If you take a look at our Simple Shift controller all of these are easily adjustable without the need of a laptop. Installation is not hard at all and especially if you already have an EFI engine the install gets even easier. What engine and year of mfr. do you have? I might be able to get you a pinout diagram for your controller.
