Help, I could use some Yenko/ COPO history....

I did google this, but the info was a bit more then i cared to sort through..

I know all the 67-70 Yenko cars were COPO's but were they all 427 cars?

also is it possible to have a COPO car not be a Yenko???

not sure on the 427 part, but a lot of dealers like fred gibb, nickey, baldwin motion, berger ordered copo cars

My 69 c10 is a COPO truck, no 427 though.

I believe that only the 1968 and 1969 Camaros were COPOs that were used to make Yenko Super Camaros. The 1969 Chevelles were COPOs that were made into Yenko Super Chevelles. As far as I know that all were 427's. 1967 Camaros were built at the dealership and were not COPOs. The is no 1970 Yenko Camaro or Chevelle I believe. BTW any special package put together was considered a COPO, so there are alot more not cool COPOs than the 427 COPOs.

Yenko is (was - now it's Sun Chevrolet) approximately 3.5 miles from my front door. I grew up looking at cars in Dons shop.

To my knowledge, all of the Yenko Camaros and Chevelles were 427s until 1970. Starting in 1970 thorugh 1972, Don built the Deuce Nova with a 350 and an LT1 based Camaro IIRC. Not all Yenkos were 427s however - Yenko also had the Stinger Corvair.

There were a bunch of "Yenko like" COPOs. Baldwin Motion, Berger, Nickey, and **** Harrell were some of the other guys out there but they never got the notoriety of Don Yenko.

I can't believe I forgot the LT-1 Novas and the Stinger Corvair.........brain fart! There was a Turbo Z28 in 1980 too.

i don't know much about the Copo Cars (I'm slowly learning) but based off what little i know would it be a fair statement to say that Don Yenko was the Carol Shelby of Chevrolet?

COPO had nothing directly to do with Yenko or the 427. COPO was just the system that was in place so that GM dealerships could order special and fleet equipped vehicles.

As mentioned Yenko and many others used the system to order what amounted to factory super cars but there was no specific option group or anything else required what placing a COPO order to the factory.
