Window tint removal

I just bought a car that seems to have window tinting installed on the windshield, along with tint that is too dark for CO on the side windows. How to I go about removing it? Google has revealed a method by which a clothes steamer is used to heat the film and loosen the adhesive. Does this work or do I have to use ammonia?

I just find a loose corner and start peeling it up. It should come off in one piece....you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to help. After that hit it with a sharp straight razor blade to scrap off the bulk of the adhesive. I then will use solvent to finish getting the goo off.

Soap and water mix and a razor blade, works fast and easy no mess..

What do you all recommend on using for a rear window with defrost?

Cut out a single layer of a black plastic trash bag to fit the window with a bit of overlap. Liberally apply soapy water to both the window and the plastic, and apply the plastic to the tinted side of the window so that a thin layer of water is between them. Let it sit in the sun for 30-60 minutes. Keep the edges wet. The water should cause the adhesive to release and make peeling off the tint easier.

What worked for me before is put heat on full and let the car idle for half an hour with doors/windows closed, tint peels right off.

You need to be very carefull when using a heat gun or hair dryer. Tempered glass doesn't like hot spots.

Pull it off then spray foaming window clener and scrape with razor blade. For rear defrost what Carl said works. Also go over it all with widow cleaner and steel wool. my buddy is a tinter and I'v stripped a bunch of cars with him.

I decided to try the steamer on the tinting on the rear window with defroster grid. Worked extremely well. I steamed the heck out of the edge got an inch or so peeled off then moved the steam back and forth while gently pulling off the sheet of tint. It left minimal adhesive behind which windex removed with a little bit of rubbing.


Its already cooling down here and I did not think I'd be able to use the trash bag method.

The steamer is the what we use in the shop. Easiest way hands down.
