      Frame Rail Width

      I did a quick search and didn't find a whole lot so I thought I would post up.

      I found a local company that makes dimension correct parallel rear frame rails for my '68 Mustang coupe. My quest for 345 wide rear tires has lead me down this path, so going parallel with the rails and doing a mini-tub setup seems to be the best route to fit them.

      My question :: how far apart should I set the rails up to be? The same distance as the front frame rails so they can just be tied in all parallel?

      Or should I set it up more so with the suspension/tires in mind? Say 1 inch of clearance from the tires? This option may have the rails sitting out further than the fronts (not a big issue -- it would just be nice to do one straight rail for a frame connection).

      I still have to rotate the car over and take all these measurements -- but I thought I'd ask for input.

      I think you want the front and rear track dimensions to be pretty close to the same. Measured to the centers of the tire treads.

      If this is going to be a fairly serious track toy, you'll want as much front tire as you can fit. This could influence your rear wheel positioning and ultimately the frame dimensions.

      Thanks for the info. I have more searching and reading to do. Found a few articles last night. I think I'll most likely end up setting the rear rails in line with the front to tie the chassis together for strength. With regards to tire position I'll end up pushing them out as far as possible for a wider track.
